Durability: (what this means)
The Good: Entertaining, interactive system with educational games.
The Bad: The computer interface takes a little getting used to.
In a Nutshell: Customizable digital characters and worlds make learning fun. | At a Glance Ages: 6 to 10 Requires: Four AA batteries and a computer with an Internet connection for set up.
| | | Making the DIDJ Your Own Before kids start creating, an adult will want to install four AA batteries (not included) in the DIDJ and set up the system. A convenient product guide pamphlet walks you through the necessary set-up tasks. This process involves installing the LEAPFROG Connect application onto your computer and transferring the included game, JetPack Heroes, onto the handheld DIDJ with a USB cable (included). Before you close the software down, kids will want to create their own custom avatars using the Didjerator. With a huge color palette to utilize, and the ability to make your avatar a robot with vampire fangs or dress it in a tuxedo with sneakers, it may take awhile to get each character perfect. Once this is done, the avatars can be downloaded to the handset and are available to play in any game that uses Didji characters. Fun, Customizable Way to Learn The included game, JetPack Heroes, stars your favorite character in a fight against the villain Gooracha. Players use math skills to free the energy buddies they have captured and provide light and life for the entire planet. Quick fingers control the hero's jet pack and gun that is used to navigate the erratic landscape and stop enemy goons in between answering addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division problems. Additional games that develop skills like vocabulary and spelling are available. One enticing feature of the interactive software is that points that are earned while playing, called Bitz, can be uploaded to your computer and then traded in for micromods, game updates such as new spaceships, backgrounds, or music. Interactive Education Overall, we had a great time creating our own characters and immersing ourselves in DIDJ worlds. The computer interface was clearly designed with young computer users in mind, which makes it easy to navigate. Several point and click menus put a wide variety of tools at your fingertips. One cool interactive feature is the learning path. After game information is uploaded from the handset, parents can follow a link in the connect software to see their children's progress, making it easy to track success. Kids are sure to enjoy studying for tests when they can set the DIDJ to use their own math facts and spelling words, making this unique system a great investment. What's in the Box Didj, USB cable, and CD with LEAPFROG connect computer application, which includes one game.

WE LOVE THE DIDJ!!!!! November 17, 2009 A. Craig (Laurel, MD) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
We own 2 Didjs, for our children 7 and 8. I have never gotten so much use out of any product, including their leapsters. My son has said "this is so much cooler than my friend's DS. That statement was nice to hear as I questioned buying him this instead of a DS. I put his spelling words on his Didj every Monday and as he plays throughout the week, he studies them. Then on Thursday, I can look at a report on how he is doing. My daughter loves that she can create her own people to play in the game. She can even customize the happy noise they make! I tell anyone I can about the Didj. It has been a great investment and HOURS AND HOURS of quite fun :) My only suggestion I would have is definately by the batter charger. Well worth the money, and you can plug it into the wall in a pinch!
Didj direly disappointing November 14, 2009 Robin Freeman (Christiansted, VI USA) Guess I really shouldn't have been disappointed - I'd read about problems other people had, but bought the thing anyway primarily because our daughter was having so much trouble with spelling and not everybody experienced problems. Of course the game that comes with it doesn't offer spelling quizzes, so we bought a game that does. I'd read the thing eats batteries, so we also bought a house and car charger. Neither of these work, or rather I should say the Didj won't work with them - the screen just flashes. Today dd and I got into an argument because I'd told her she could use the Didj if she played the spelling games. She finally told me that every time she plays that game, it freezes on her. So tonight I took it for a test drive and, sure enough, it froze. There have been multiple other problems with the Didj. It's really a shame because if it worked properly, it could be a good resource. I was fantasizing today about a company that would make a really good learning gameboy. DS . . . are you listening? This is the only video game our daughter (age 8) has ever owned and I know many other parents that feel the same way, but we'll make allowances if the games have an educational component.
Son Disappointed November 11, 2009 Belinda R. Martinez (CT) We upgraded to this from the L-Max as this one seemed more big boy and closer to the DS. Overall its a fun toy. It doesn't help kids along like the L-max did. One of the most disappointing features is the need to go online to use blitz points(earned by playing, used for in-game upgrades). In this economy we no longer have internet and our computer is having issues so he is not able to utilize his blitz points. Also, it continually needs to be connected to the computer to be "upgraded". It is a lot of hassle and we regret having bought this over other systems. My son gets completely frustrated when it wont even turn on because its requesting being plugged into the computer. Over all the L-max is completely better. I wont even get into the horrible service I received when I bought directly from Leapfrog.
Same Cartridge Problem as Others are Getting November 11, 2009 Consumerator (Redondo Beach, CA United States) I had a lot of hope for this product, as my son really liked his Leapster II system, and learned from it while having fun. Like many others, my son's Didj began displaying the "Please reinsert cartridge" error eventually every time he tried to use a cartridge game. For those of you who don't own the unit, the only reason for the unit is to play the cartridge games. So after spending money on the unit, as well as a number of cartridges, it's all now worthless, it cannot be played.
I have done everything instructed by Leapfrog support, and have received a replacement unit. I'm still having the problem. This product has an inherent fatal flaw they have not fixed. Let alone that my son has treated the unit almost delicately, whereas most kids won't. So it's NOT a kid-friendly product.
Do not buy it, you'll be throwing away your money like I did.
Waste of money November 4, 2009 L.W. Like most other reviewers this toy is a complete waste of money. We have enjoyed other Leapfrog toys but can't stress the amount of frustration that we have had with the Didj. To constantly have to hook up to a computer is a PAIN despite very little play time on the unit. Sometimes cartridges will work in the unit and then stop working. The list of problems goes on and on... just read other reviewers comments. We all have the same problems!! Do yourself a favor and pass this product up it operates poorly and is not very educational.
