I bought this as a Christmas gift for a family member. I have bought several puzzle boxes in the past and this is the first one that did not come with a solution. It was also much smaller than expected. Many of the puzzle boxes I have purchased have an area inside to hide money or small gifts. This one does not. I think if the product description had listed some of these facts, I would not have been so disappointed.

While the other Hanayama puzzles I have require thought and careful manipulation that is not how this puzzle is solved. The mechanism is very easy to defeat but this type of device is obscure. As such, it is great fun to watch others struggle with it. It is devastating because it doesn't play by the same rules as what people (who haven't seen something similar) expect. I have had to explain the mechanism to everyone I have shown mine to so far.
If you purchase it for someone don't be to surprised if they take longer to open the package than to separate the pieces.
A departure for Hanayama puzzles May 20, 2009

Hanayama cast metal puzzles are fantastic and devious brain teasers. News, however, is something of a departure for the series, and isn't one of my favorites. The puzzle's mechanism is hidden inside, and you cannot see the results of your manipulations while attempting to solve it.
This is very unusual for the series, which usually let you see every piece of the puzzle while you work at it. That being said, it is still a quality puzzle.

A coworker brought this puzzle into the office along with other Hanayama Cast puzzles. So a bunch of engineering geeks left their computers and were totally consumed by them for several hours. I think this one was the most difficult to solve because the way to solve it is quite different from the others. A hint: think about the laws of physics.

This is one of the best gifts I've ever purchased. Very durable, and a great puzzle, but also challenging. Expect to sit down for several hours trying to solve it.
