Durability is the main issue November 18, 2009 GenXmom (San Jose, CA) This workbench from Step2 is very easy to assemble out of the box, and it's a good imaginative toy, but the main issue is its durability. The plastic is flimsy, and by flimsy I mean that you can drill screws into the plastic with a provided screw and a screwdriver. The bench is held together by four such screws that you push into the legs. The top is just a pop-in piece, and the whole thing wobbles with pressure or a push. It's very lightweight and not that sturdy, which leads me to doubt its durability.
That said, for the discounted price, I couldn't beat this workbench. The others are more expensive and have just about the same functions and tools. Some reviewers were concerned about the construction pieces not being real wood but foam, but I didn't have an issue with that, and at this learning stage, we're still putting pieces together to create small projects -- a "birdhouse" is a birdhouse. If we were building real birdhouses, we could [still] do that in the garage, so I think the play and educational value in this workbench comes from its imaginative and replayability features, not from its actual constructibles. I will say that these foam pieces disassemble very quickly so that we can keep building new objects.
Besides the durability issue, I think the other is size; this workbench is small! It looked bigger in pictures, so I was a little surprised. If you're looking for something big and substantial, you will probably want to skip this toy.
For a 3-year-old boy October 7, 2009 N. Bonds (Mission Viejo, California) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this for my grandson's 3rd birthday. We received it promptly and in good condition. With a history of carrying around a small tool box, this workshop seemed ideal. He was very interested in playing with each of the tools included, but his 5-year-old sister was the one who wanted to put the pieces together with the screws and screw driver to make something. He will need some mommy- or daddy-and-me time to get the idea. The good thing is that it should interest him for quite some time as he is able to do more. The tight fitting drawer was annoying. He could close it, but not open it, so it will probably not be used to store the tools. All in all, I think it was a good toy for his age and older.
Great toy, but Step2 needs to sell foam parts separately. April 25, 2009 Sven Johnson (Oceanside, CA USA) I bought this on sale from Step 2 for my son's third birthday. He built all kinds of his own creations. Last summer, I found him and his older brother building the projects on the blueprint. They were fighting over the pieces. I looked online and could not find replacement pieces anywhere. Now we have lost one of the four wheels that go with this toy so we cannot build many of the projects. I tried to give this toy away for younger kids to use, but my son (now 5) would not have it. Overall this is a durable and interesting little workbench. It has stuck around our house a year longer than I thought it would.
Cute, but not durable. January 26, 2009 KPS (Grand Blanc, MI) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My son loves tools so I got this for his third birthday. He doesn't play with it as much as I thought he would. The drawer is impossible to open and close so we just leave it shut. I'm not sure what causes it to fit so tightly that it cannot be easily opened without using some force. It is also a lot smaller than I imagined. He does play with it from time to time, but I don't think it is one of his favorite toys by any means. I do like being able to build different projects with him though. Perhaps he will use it more as he gets older.
my sons best gift ever January 13, 2009 Roz Incandela (la) this workshop is so great, the kids actually get satisfaction out of building something, over and over again and you can make several diferent things. Keeps them busy for hours. Very easy to keep organized as well! Would reccommend for age 3 but older kids loved it too.
