Editorial Review Sure, you can let your child use your laptop to watch movies or play games on a long car ride or airplane trip. But do you really want risk losing valuable work data or have sticky hands touching the keys? Hasbro's VideoNow XP is a durable 8-1/2-by-5-1/2-inch handheld video system on a smaller scale for a smaller audience. The system only plays personal video discs (PVDs) specifically designed for this player, which limits the viewing choices and gets a bit pricey as they are not rentable like DVDs. Among the viewing choices are cartoons, young adult shows and movies, and music videos. This XP model also offers interactive gaming PVDs. This mini-laptop opens up to reveal a 3-inch backlit screen, which is just big enough to follow what is happening in the show. A 180-degree rotating hinge adjusts the screen to a comfortable angle for watching on the go. Video controls are along the front of the keypad area and feature play, stop, forward, and back buttons. A four-way directional pad for gaming is located on the upper left side of the keypad. Just as with an adult laptop, the VideoNow XP has a high-quality speaker, volume and contrast controls, and DC power and headphone jacks. This system runs on three "AA" batteries. The previous incarnation of this toy was awarded the Best Toy of 2004 at the Ultimate Toy Awards Show. --Cristina Vaamonde

Made me think... January 11, 2007 K. Scharpf 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
It made me think it was a normal DVD player, whne i got it in the mail, i was supprised to find it was very very small. I should have read the PVD but i just overlooked it and thought DVD. It might be goood, ut you also have to buy all the videos. Your better off just buying a DVD player that can be used with all DVDs instead of PVDs you buy just for this, when else are you going to use a PVD?
Didn't work September 23, 2006 J White (Chicago IL) 5 out of 7 found this review helpful
I bought this last year for my son for Christmas. I didn't buy the PVD's until some time later, because all of the age appropriate titles or the ones he would like were sold out everywhere. (He is now 7)Anyway, by the time I finally got him some PVD's, the system, although it had been unopened until that time, did not work. Occasionally I would hear sound, but I never saw a picture. I was very disappointed and since I had purchased it quite a while before we used it, I didn't bother trying to return it. I gave in and bought a Video Now FX player today, so I am hoping that we have better results with this one.

MIXED FEELINGS ABOUT IT April 21, 2006 MOM OF TWO (Washington) 11 out of 12 found this review helpful
As in my title I have mixed feelings about this toy. My children both have the original color version of the VideNow. I thought I would upgrade them to the newer version. They have a cheap feel to them and don't seem to work very well. In fact one is going back to the store next week for a trade in. There is a lock botton that freezes the bottons so you can't accidently turn off while watching. But it seems like the buttons freeze up on their own quite often. I can see why the batteries go dead quickly because if a child can't turn off the unit it just gets left on! I am very dissapointed in this. The kids really enjoyed their Color versions and I feel I shouldn't have gone to the extra expense to upgrade them. However, even with it's faults my kids still enjoy them. My kids don't watch a lot of TV and prefer the shorter pvds to the long Dvds. I prefer that too. That way I can say they can watch one show and know they won't be watching for an hour or more. If you are a parent thinking about purchassing one- keep you receipt in case you need to exchange and carefully think about how your kids will be using it. If your child is easily dissapointed by items that may not work properly this may not be the item for you!
toy is fun but is not worth the money April 2, 2006 5 out of 5 found this review helpful
this item is pretty cheap when you buy it at target or any store with good prices, but it eventually adds up to more than it is worth. Each pvd is about $8.99, but only holds 30 min. at the most! I got this toy because hasbro.com made it look so cool, but it is not worth it. I use it every now and then but my dad doesn't spend a lot of money on me and there are limits. After buying a few pvds for the player, you could have had a dvd player. Dvds are about the same price sometimes lower if it is on sale, and the hold a lot more space. You can also make dvds on the computer! You can make pvds but they hold under 20 min. I am not saying this toy is horrible. If you have a child 8 or younger, video now xp might be a good way to go. The good thing about it is on the back of each pvd, there is a now point. If you get six or more nowpoints, you get a free pvd by mail! One good point about it is that there is a long waranty. My first one didn't work very well so I got a new one. Although on the box you see two kids watching their videonow in the car, it is not a good idea unless it is a warm day. Videonow xp is sensitive to the cold and could be damaged if left in the cold too lond. Think twice before you get it.
