Let's Give It Four. October 23, 2009 Gary Peterson (San Diego, California USA) Our boy just had his first birthday party and one of the gifts he received was a Melissa and Doug Shape Sorting Cube. The manufacturer says it's for children of 2 and up, so I guess the gift is a bit ahead of the game. That's OK. Right now, our boy uses the little blocks for bashing on things and for chewing on. The top also gets a certain amount of chewing around the corners.
In any case, it's a nice wooden toy, in contrast to many of his other plastic toys and almost all seem to be Made in China. I cringe at the brightly painted pieces and hope that the paint is safe. So many things from China turn out to be tainted, these days. I guess this Shape Sorting Cube is educational in that it can be used to learn shapes and colors and help in counting and reasoning skills. Well, so be it. Will the kid enjoy it as a toy? Who Knows? We'll just have to wait beyond the bashing and chewing stages. Would I have enjoyed it and found it a good learning experience? Probably marginal, at best. So how shall I rate it? I'll give it four stars. My feeling is three, but it hasn't been tested by the boy as yet and my hopes are he would rate it a five.

Flaking Paint! October 14, 2009 bhg (PA) I ordered this shape sorter for two reasons. There are many more shapes than in most of the others that I've looked at, and I like wooden toys. My grandson enjoyed playing with the shapes; however, after having this toy for a few months, the paint began to flake off. His parents noticed the flakes of paint on his face and threw the toy away. I am concerned about the safety of such a toy!
Good for older children October 13, 2009 Mom of twins (Miami FL) I thought my twins would love this shape sorter because they love their plastic one. Since it has so many shapes I thought it would be a lot more useful than the plastic one that only has four. Here's a tip, make sure your chid is older than 3 before using this toy. Younger ones want to put the pieces and the lid in their mouth. My daughter got a splinter in her gums from chewing on the lid. Also, it's really hard for toddlers. The shapes are poorly cut so it's not obvious that a parallelogram hole should fit the awkward looking chunk that is supposed to be a 3D parallelogram.
Educational but design is questionable. October 11, 2009 D. Gordon (Chicago, IL) I disagree with some of the reports. It isn't hard to get the other shapes in the hole when it starts to fill up....gravity...the blocks fall to the bottom. However, the lid stayed on ours it was a good fit but the lid eventually broke. Maybe it was too tight and that is why it broke instead of being too loose. I have tried other shape sorters by other manufacturers since and my son enjoys this one the best. The others are built pretty poorly or they are too easy for him. No win situation. For $10-15, I guess it is worth it.
Great Wooden toy for a 18-36 months old! September 15, 2009 Alejandra Oliver (Miami, Florida United States) We bought this product, even though he had another plastic sorter.
He prefered this one instantly! It feels great on the hands and it's lots of fun, because it comes with so many shapes..
I think they enjoy it more when they are closer to 24 months..because some shapes are difficult.
The top part broke, but my son was using it as a stool! lol
It's very durable..
Great toy!
