Product Description Kids will want to practice their math on this portable skill-building ELA that turns math into a video game. MathShark quizzes eight different skill levels in addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, decimals, and percentages, AND works as a full-function calculator with the press of a button. Problems are displayed on the LCD screen either vertically or horizontally. Answers receive immediate feedback with colorful flashing lights and tones. Sets are timed, and the elapsed time plus a message appear at the end of each set. As they see their time improve, kids are continually motivated to beat it, just like when they play a video game. The more they play, the more they learn. Requires two "AA" batteries (not included). Measures 10" x 6.1" x 3.9".
Editorial Review Educational Insights brings a terrific idea to life in Math Shark, a combination skill-building tool and calculator. The shape, colors, flashing lights, and beeps--all reminiscent of a hand-held electronic game--will appeal to kids who may not otherwise be interested in practicing math. (Parents: the sound is unobtrusive, but can be turned off.) Math Shark offers eight different skill levels and seven skill groupings: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, fractions, and percentages. After every question a red or green flashing light and a corresponding beep let you know whether or not you answered correctly. If you get one wrong, the right answer flashes, and the question keeps appearing, along with any others answered incorrectly, until you get it right. After each set an encouraging comment--"You did it!" or "Way to go!"--comes up on the screen. The sets are timed, and your score, based on how long it took to answer all the questions correctly, appears at the end. When practice is done for the day, Math Shark becomes a handy calculator. Requires two AA batteries, not included. --Rachel Radway

Does the trick October 10, 2009 bb (TX) This met the needs of 3 kids as they went through early grade school.
Pluses: It does have a range of levels for each function. It's lasted three years.
Minuses: LCD is hard to read - not enough contrast. Needs an optional back light. Buttons are 'squishy' and processor is slow - the kids can type faster than the machine can process.
Overall, somewhat entertaining for the kids. They still felt it was a chore to go through the repetitive drills of their own volition, but not so bad that they wouldn't do it when asked. While it's not super-durable, it will last if cared for.
screen is a real problem September 4, 2009 anonymous 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I really wanted to like this. The screen is just so sub par. The kids will pull it out occasionally to use as a calculator but that's only because they don't have another one. However bad you think the screen might be it is probably worse. This quality of screen would have been complained about by reviewers 20 years ago because it does cut things off and make them unreadable. Today it makes no sense to sell a screen like this when people are use to so much better. Also a rubber button promptly fell off and is still floating around the house somewhere.
Great idea; lousy quality August 22, 2009 DanetteD (Slidell, LA.) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I purchased this game to help my 8 year old increase her recall speed in math (addition, subtraction and multiplication). Loved the idea that this would grow with her and challenge her at different levels. When the product arrived we were not able to turn it on, even after trying several sets of batteries. Set it back for an exchange and the second one turned on, but stopped working after two uses. Sent it back again, and was told by Amazon that the product is being pulled from their distribution because of poor quality and other similar complaints. Needless to say I am very disappointed.
battery just doesn't last May 29, 2009 Guest the batteries in this die too fast for it to be any good. I don't know why they die so fast but we have it in our little car games bag and every time my son pulled it out the batteries were dead. at least our L-max works great. We just haven't been able to get much use out of this product, and I think we overpaid for it because of the battery problem.
