| Editorial Reviews:
Product Description A compendium of more than 240 classroom-tested lessons, this essential resource helps teachers build student understanding and skills and understand how children best learn math. In this third edition, Marilyn Burns has completely revised the first section to reflect what she has learned over the years from her classroom experience with students and her professional development experience with teachers. This section has also been expanded to address these important topics: teaching math vocabulary, incorporating writing into math instruction, linking assessment and instruction, and using children's literature to teach key math concepts. In an entirely new section, Marilyn addresses a wide range of questions she has received over the years from elementary and middle school teachers regarding classroom management and instructional issues.

On time, but charged EXTRA for shipping April 26, 2009 Rosa M. Warfel 0 out of 7 found this review helpful
The book arrived on time but I had to pay about 8$ more for shipping because the sender did not put postage on the package.
Get this, get math understanding! March 16, 2009 T. M. (Nevada, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
A gem that helps students acquire math understanding! Fun games that are easily produced, help children build their own conceptual knowledge of math so they can apply it to real-life situations.
I'd throw out every math text book ever created & use this instead! We'd have a country of children with much stronger math skills!
I use this book a lot in my teaching! It, along with De Walle's book, are my mentors & partners in giving my students conceptual success!
about teaching math - great January 18, 2009 K. Perez (Bradenton, FL, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Marilyn Burns is spending this portion of her career thinking about intervention strategies. This edition, while not the most recent, still gives teachers the math background necessary to listen to students as they talk and write their way into understanding. Deep understanding of the math is critical for teachers, as well as the notion of a menu of math activities that will allow teachers to assess conceptual understanding, for students to choose math activities that engage them and record their thinking - both for themselves and the teacher. It is all about knowing what the student does with the instruction. We are charged with developing a generation of problem solvers, and this book sits with me every day as I coach teachers in their lesson planning.
