5 out of 5 stars Misleading title - Excellent book   September 4, 2009
Robert D. Watson (www.green-machine.info)
The title of this book is about as misleading as it gets - these are not activities, they're worksheets, and I'd say 90% of them do not have "real world" applications like they claim. Despite this, I find this book to be among my top 3 favorite sources for worksheets and in-class work.

The worksheets are not always worksheets in the way that they just offer practice. Most will require your students to actually think. For instance, I love the worksheet where there are about 12 Order of Operations problems offered, where the students have to match the original with a partially completed step, and then solve from there. The follow up "activity" offers them two order of operations problems, one correct and one not, and the students have to write why the incorrect one is wrong and how the incorrect person got their solution.

For the concept of translating words to math, they offer a true/false worksheet (another opportunity to write), a crossword puzzle (forcing them to think backwards), and a few standard practice worksheets.

These, in my view, are much better than simple drill practice worksheets. Of course, a number of those will be found in here as well, but in general, there are some pretty good options. You probably wouldn't use all of these to teach a course, but for each section in the curriculum, you can find 3 or 4 you wouldn't mind using as homework or a group activity. I would highly recommend this to teachers who are willing to go above and beyond with their students.

I've used several of the worksheets in the book. I personally like the graphing worksheets.
It's not a bad book to have in order to complement your instruction.

But you will need other resources.

Now that I'm in the classroom, I'm not finding anything I can use in this book. There are work sheets galore that you can download off of the web that are just as interesting.

1 out of 5 stars Worksheets are not activities.   August 5, 2007

I was disappointed in this book because I expected at least some activities. This is merely a collection of worksheets. Nothing about this book describes a hands-on approach or "real-world applications" for algebra. If you're looking for better worksheets then this is the book for you. However, it is misleading to call this an "activities kit".

I've used this book A LOT in the math classes I teach: Algebra 1, Algebra 2, SAT prep. Many of the worksheets are designed for quick grading. (Typically the students are to decode a message as they world through the problems.) -- A great supplemental resource for helping students learn or review algebraic topics.
