Hype inversely proportional to quality once again October 6, 2008 Although Spore is initially quite impressive, given the novelty of such extensive use of user-designed content, the game quickly becomes disappointing. Creature design (vehicles and buildings also) is essentially cosmetic, aside from a few minor effects in one stage of the game. The game itself, rather than being a single, coherent experience, is divided into 5 mini games (stress on mini), each of which feels very incomplete. On the second or third time playing through, gameplay becomes very formulaic, like playing solitaire without shuffling. I never expect a game to live up to the hype (especially this much hype) but Spore doesn't even come close. Maybe Maxis plans to make us buy half a dozen expansions before the game is worth the base $50 price (see Sims).
Don't believe the hype October 6, 2008 Unbelievable. Look how quickly people jump on the bandwagon. Securom isn't anything new. A lady at work asked me today if it was safe to by Spore, would it destroy her computer. Ridiculous hype. But what can you expect from a community used to making easy illegal copies?
I own two copies now, having just bought a second copy so we could play on our mac too. The whole family has really enjoyed this game. I just got the 40 hours of play time badge this weekend. The only thing I wish they would have done differently is the beginning stages in the tide pool. We would have liked it to be longer and more involved. My children are still amazed with the creations that are possible and constantly call me to come look at what they've made, beaming with pride.
It's sad how powerful the illegal copy community has become to end up with the kind of reviews that are plastered all over this game which deserves much more than one star.
This is a genuinely fun game, played by a house full of gamers. I recommended it to my friends.
Forget the Naysayers, this game is FUN October 6, 2008 Geesh, talk about a bunch of whiny little kids. What isn't to love about this **game**? Very little. It has fantastic graphics, an innovative game play engine, a very extensive galaxy to explore, and it is fun! My wife and I got this game and so far have barely had time to come up for air. Installing it was easy, no problems there, and the game explained itself. Sure, I'd love it if it were more complex; I had hoped that it would be more complicated than it is, but I have certainly still had a wonderful time playing it, and that is ultimately why I buy a game.
For all the folks who are so angry about the DRM--let's give it a rest. Yes, EAGames has instituted a pretty draconian system here, but as long as you know about it before you buy, then you know what you are getting. I say that in this case, the fun outweighs the annoyance of a company trying to control me.
At least until I hit that magic 3 installation mark. Then I might find myself whining as much as the other toddlers here on this site.
Repetitive and computer slowdown October 6, 2008 The DRM install slowed my computer and forced me to reformat just to be able to use my software.
The game play is boring and predictable, with game generated events that attempt to force a course of play and do not allow any of the "freedom" to explore and build like the advertisements imply.
It was worth it. October 6, 2008 After reading all of the reviews good and bad, about the game and about the software I made the decision to buy it anyway. It was totally worth it. It is a fun game that takes hours upon hours away from your life, that is if you have hours to take away. It is is amusing as well as puzzeling. Either way I say it is 100% worth it to buy the game, this is if you want to get addicted.
