Not fun at all July 5, 2009 L. Wilmeth (Hawaii) 0 out of 4 found this review helpful
I've played many games; many mmorpg games, shooters, etc. I felt like giving this game a whirl since it had gone through a couple of expansion packs so I purchased it on STEAM with the City of Villains and Architect additions. I had the idea that I would create many different characters to experience the game from all of its angles but 1 was all it took for me to realize this game is absolute garbage.
As soon as you get in to the game, you will notice the horrible controls and brain-dead, third person camera. It handles worse than any of those free-to-play MMO games. It's laggy, ping-wise, not the frames per second. The graphics are a joke. Very bland city with mobs of thugs every 30 feet beating the snot out of some average joe. You go in, kill them, and move on.
If a friend asked me if they should try it, I would say to not even waste your time. If it had any sense of salvation I would note it, but it doesn't, so just take my advice and don't put yourself through this horrible example of an MMO.
Great Game Diluted June 4, 2009 A. S. Donnelly (Denver, CO) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
This was a great game when it first came out. I started playing it in Beta and loved the direction it seemed to be headed. The only major flaw I saw to early game play was that "Super Groups" were poorly implemented and of little use. Aside from that it was an awesome game.
But somewhere along the line the visions of the developers ran contrary to the legions of fans. The game play became diluted through constant rebalancing and a large number of the games original players were driven away. I have given up playing it. I tried it briefly recently, just to see if maybe my original impulse to leave was rash and jaded, but it just isn't a fun game any more. Very unfortunate.
Heroic growth September 18, 2008 James Stinedurf (USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
since i started playing this game over a year ago, the game has been filled with new content that expands the game and continues to make it great. i've played other games like WoW and GW where you have to buy their upgrades like you would with a new game... the CoH upgrades, called issues, are free. City of Villains is now one with CoH, which means, you buy one you get both for the same price =)
if you ever wanted to be a hero, or villain, buy this game since there's no comparison. i can put down WoW and even GW which i love but to each their own. give it a try since the first month is free and you can choose to keep playing or decided it's not for you and just quit... it's that easy.
oh yeah, the holiday events are great fun =). halloween has trick ro treating where you can earn special items or battle special enemies to earn badges. christmas you get giant snowment coming out to combat and valentines day you get to unlock some special costume pieces. there's tons of things to do in this game from leveling up as quick as possible to taking your time and earning badges along the way, to doing task forces, trials and other special missions along the way. there's tons of zones and like i've said, tons of content and things to do. of of my favorite things is the created a toon screen where the custom features make it possible to make your toon look like anything you can imagince.
i say give it a try and if you like it great, if not then you don't have to continue...no harm no foul
City of Heroes 3 years and still loving it January 21, 2008 Michael Rose (Sausalito, CA United States) I cant tell you how many games over the years I wasted my money on. City of Heroes is the only game I was ever completely satisfied with. Not only great graphics, fun gameplay, interesting people, truly versatile character creation, endless expansions... i could go on and on. Ive been playing for 3 years. I have both heroes and villains. Team and solo play very satisfying and fun. Veteran players are mostly helpful and eager to assist newbies to the game. I tended to be negative to the additions of player vs. player zones, arena competition and the new invention/economy system but to my surprise over time I have grown to love them. I dont do pvp much because the adrenaline rush does not mix well with my coffee habit ;). Each time you create a character you can choose to take the tutorial which does a great job of explaining all the mechanics of the game (wait until your first time flying! ((level 14)) One of the best things about this game is you choose what you want to participate in and how involved you will be. You even get to change your difficulty for missions (five settings). Be warned that your "real life" may suffer from neglect (lol). Do make sure you have a good/fast internet connection and at least 256mb of video card ram. I have played on lower end/older systems ok but you will love it more if you have a true gaming system.
Honestly Impressed October 9, 2007 Krivvin Rumrua (MS, USA) Over the years, I have played many MMOs and eventually most have reached the point where the game has lost its polish and the flaws in the design grow so obvious that I can no longer enjoy it. After starting to get burnt out on World of Warcraft in 2005, I turned my attention to the City of Heroes. I have not once stopped my subscription with it since then. Furthermore, never have I been more impressed with the apparent love that they put into the game with everything they've done with it. They have released content that other MMOs would label as expansions and charge money and Cryptic has released them for FREE. Their only expansion, City of Villains, is the equivalent of an entire new game added on top of the massive world that already exists with Heroes.
Their greatest feature is without a doubt the character customization. It has had so many options available from the jump and it has only expanded exponentially since release. There is even a forum topic devoted to the requests of players for new costume pieces and he does listen to what the players have requested.
The one thing that you will hear the most complains about is Enhancement Diversification ("ED"). I honestly do not feel any of the pain that the others claim to have from it being implemented. The designers wanted it this way. It is their vision of how the game is supposed to be. Many other MMOs have done the same, most definitely World of Warcraft! Believe me. I know. I tried out Burning Crusade when it was released and it was even more frustrating than when I was playing it back so many years ago.
While the strongest feature is the creation, the gameplay feels as close to accurate portrayal of heroics than any other graphic game. If you make a suitable character and learn how to play well enough, you can make a character that CAN wade into a huge group of villains and come out of it ready for more. Though, you can make so many different character types that I think anyone's reasonable ideas can be satisfied with what is out there.
So if you are a fan of superheroes and like playing MMOs, you should at least give City of Heroes a shot. Get on, make a hero, and save the world! If you are not sure, go check out the official website to see what is coming up with Issue 11: A Stitch in Time!
