3 out of 5 stars fond memories   July 14, 2009

This edition of battle chess brings back memories of the earlier game i played on my old Tandy computer wuth my kids. The animation and sound is tons better, the battle scenes need to be a bit longer and have more action.

"The new version however is violent and sleezy. The pieces graphically beat each other up and the queen struts like a hooker across the board. At one point when the red king challenged the blue queen, they grabbed each other in a passionate kiss, and she pulled a knife on him. He promptly swore and killed her."

You sold me!!! Oh Ya!! I love the violence, the sleeze, just the ticket to jazz up a boaring game of chess!
Yup, I've had Battle Chess since the old Win3.1 daze, but I really wish they would update it to today's standards. Improve the graphics, and like one of the others stated 'add some drama to the battles', perhaps even add an adult 'R' level (lets put some real sleeze into that slut Queen!!)

1 out of 5 stars Really Bad!!!!!   May 17, 2005

I taught my kids how to play chess on this game when we had an old Commadore computer a few years back. It was really kid freindly back then with pawns jousting and some of the captured pieces being turned into toads. Kids and adults couldn't get enough of it.

I bought the new version hoping to let my youngest six year old have the same experiance (it is rated for six and up). The new version however is violent and sleezy. The pieces graphically beat each other up and the queen struts like a hooker across the board. At one point when the red king challenged the blue queen, they grabbed each other in a passionate kiss, and she pulled a knife on him. He promptly swore and killed her. Just what you want your child to see and learn.

At the novice level it never makes a mistake, unlike as if playing with another beginner. This makes it so that she has no chance of winning, which can be really discouraging to someone new to the game.

The angle of the board makes it difficult to determine which square the players are on, and at one point it wouldn't even allow a legitimate move on our part.

They have taken all the fun out of this game, it was a useless purchase.

5 out of 5 stars THIS IS FOR XP USERS!!!! BUY IT!!!!!   April 1, 2005

Okay, the Battle chess collection does have two more games than this bundle but the bottom line is that it only works if you have Windows 95/98 and DOS 3.1 or higher. For those of us who do not possess outdated computers but long for these classic games should get this bundle. I had the collection, but could not get it to work. I then bought this bundle for only $6.15! (and the price just seems to be getting better. When I popped it into my computer, I was delighted to finally play battle chess and battle chess II. The only problem is that the sound for Chinese Chess comes from the PC's internal speakers (really, this isn't a problem, as it sounds basically the same for this game). So if you have an old computer with Windows 95-8 and DOS, then by all means, buy the collection, but if you have an XP, this will work (I don't think it works on 2000 or Me). Hope this helps.

4 out of 5 stars Best Animated Chess Game   July 14, 2003

Battle Chess is an excellent game. Downloading onto our Windows 98 was a bit tedious but once we read the Read Me ( START, RUN, then type D:/ )from the CD and learned the right way to download it, we haven't had a problem with it. Don't use the auto install window that pops up.
The Battle Graphics are fun to watch even when you are losing.....badly. The game is very smart, even on level 1 setting.
