4 out of 5 stars VMFUSION VS NATIVE WINDOWS 7   November 19, 2009

I have been very pleased with the performance of VMFUSION 3 on my Mac Pro.

The Mac has Dual Quad core Xeon 2.8Ghz processors with 4 cores and 8 GB allocated to the Win 7 VM. I am using the std video card that came with the MAC which is a pretty decent card. Drives on both machines are SATA, same brand and models. The PC is using a high end ASUS P6T board, Intel I7 920 Quad-Core processor, 6GB DDR3 RAM and an inexpensive (49.00 on sale) 512mb video card.

-------->MAC->PC
Processor 7.1 7.4
RAM 7.9 7.5
Graphics 2.0 3.7
Gaming Graphics 3.4 4.3
Primary HD 5.9 5.8

Either machine could have the video card upgraded to get better numbers for gaming, but I did not have any problem with Aero on my Mac and am happy with the performance.

BF2 did not run well in my XP VM, frame rate was too slow. I decided to run Red Alert 3 as a native Mac app after I saw it was avail. As far as I am concerned, I can run a Boot Camp XP to run my games in and get full performance.

With the flexibility that Fusion has given me, I am very happy with the product and the performance. I am a professional developer, not a professional gamer and as long as there is a way to run my games on this box, either with boot camp or in a VM, I really don't care how it gets done.

4 out of 5 stars Sticking with VMWare Fusion....   November 15, 2009

I cut my teeth in virtualization software with VMWare's Fusion 2 so I probably have a bias towards it when I say I have found VMWare Fusion 3 easier to navigate and more intuitive to use than Parallels 5. Now that I've tried both [VMWare Fusion and Parallels] I'm sticking with VMWare's Fusion--it just works for me. YMMV. Best of luck with whichever virtualization software you choose.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible!   November 11, 2009

This does nothing more than can be done with free alternatives.
WARNING - It installs kernel extensions that not only slow down your system, but can make it unresponsive, unstable, and problematic.
I uninstalled this tool after just a week of use. Its buggy, and not worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Revised review; initial migration problems bypassed by creating a new virtual machine   November 9, 2009

Couldn't get it to do the basic task it is intended for -- put my PC on my MAC. I followed all instructions, disabled firewalls, UAC, etc., installed Migration agent on the PC and Fusion on the MAC, tried to migrate, but the MAC will not recognize my PC (invalid user name or password, it now says).

I decided to create a new virtual machine with XP Pro instead of migrating my old PC. The results are amazing. The virtual PC, now installed with Office 2007, seems faster than a native PC. I don't know why the migration function was totally dysfunctional for me, but alls well that ends well. Now I have the best of both worlds on one platform.

4 out of 5 stars Getting better all the time...   November 6, 2009

Ive been running VMware fusion on both an iMac and Macbook 13" for some time now, progressively moving through each "upgrade" of version 2. The last two revisions attempted to integrate with Snow Leopard finally, albeit, with long lists of bug fixes and known problems.

My big gripes with version 2 (before trying v3 which I'll get to shortly)
1) buggy loads of XP. If you leave somethign plugged in to your USB and restart, blue screen of death, reboot...or blue screen and lockup. Many versions of crashes, some of which required me to go into the package contents for my virtual machine and delete the .lck files so that I could unfreeze it and try again.
2) even when it did load without incident, very slow to get you up and running. And once XP was just about loaded, a good 30 seconds before the network connection icon would show up and the network signal would pass from Mac OS to the virtual machine. Kind of annoying.
3) Very slow transition between mac and XP operating systems. Using the command-control-s would take a while to resize the the window for XP and allow access to the Mac OS if in full screen view. Unity was too painful. Plus, if you use single window, and have a bunch of icons on your windows desktop, it rearranges everything (if not locked) which is annoying because I have stuff organizzed a certain way on my desktop.
4) programs run much slower than on a native XP. Cursor drags slowly, editing text is thus painful, and moving between cells in Excel, same issue. Just slow slow slow. Graphics also take a long time to load, and complicated web graphics dont render well. VMware xp often seems confused when loading pages.

Sooooo what about Version 3 of Fusion you say? Well, oddly enough, nearly ALL of the above are fixed! The network pass through takes 30 seconds still, which im still bothered by, but oh well. XP loads faster. But part of that may be because Mac OSX loads a bit slower at initial machine start up. Programs run MUCH faster though, which is a huge benefit. No more pathetic slow MS office response times. That in and of itself is worth the upgrade.

I cant say yet whether it is more stable. I had a blue screen of death on the install, but it resolved in the normal way (through my hard work) and since, I havent had any issues. But those issues are almost always on startup and shutdown...once running, doesnt seem to ever crash. Maybe one day I'll work with VMware to figure out what is screwed up in my virtual machine that could be causing this. For the record, Im no expert on Virtualization.

Overall, A-
A solid product that keeps getting better.

A few things to note - try to avoid the symantec bundle that comes with the download. Pay attention to what you click on, so you dont end up getting something you dont need that just ends up as bloatware.

Also, the upgrade is a bit annoying now, because they try to sell you subscriptions to support, which means, if you dont buy that, your support is going to blow, and you'll end up fixing stuff on your own via their website support discussions, and trial and error. Or otherwise, their product just becomes a lot more expensive on an annual basis. Not cool.

Maybe I should change that to B+
