Purchased this software after 4 months of using Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus. Like this program much better. A lot easier to use and I have yet to open the help menu to figure things out. The crashes at odd times is a bit annoying. However, you can get it back up and running fairly quickly. Thus the reason why I'm not giving it 5 stars. Save you changes as you go along, the program will crash if you try to do too many things at once. Otherwise, definately recommend this program over Magix Movie Edit Pro Plus any day!!

Before I bought this software, I downloaded trial versions of several different video editing programs, including Adobe Premiere Elements 7, Corel VideoStudio Pro X2 and Sony Vegas MoveStudio 9 Platinum, as well as Cyberlink PowerDirector 8. Premiere was buggy, VideoStudio was slow, and Vegas had a complex user interface. I found PowerDirector to be the fastest on my hardware and to have the most intuitive user interface. I'm using a laptop with a P8600 Core 2 Duo processor and an Nvidia Geforce 9650M GT graphics card with 1GB of memory.
I'm converting several old VCR tapes to DVD. PowerDirector couldn't seem to capture video from my Canon HV20 in Analog->DV pass through mode, but I was able to capture with Windows Movie Maker or VirtualDub and then import the video files to a PowerDirector project. Scene detection (by content) worked quickly and well. I like the animated menus that it adds to DVDs. It also handles high-definition video I capture using HDVSplit with no problem, and I was able to join several files together, add titles, and output them as .mpg without reencoding most of the video, which was very fast.
Don't buy any video editing software without first downloading the free trial version and trying it out on your computer. If you purchase this software, be sure you also download the latest update from [...], it fixes a lot of bugs. Also check out [...] for a list of hardware requirements for increasing levels of video editing tasks, and visit their user forums to find solutions to problems.

This is the best video editing software ...if you can get it to work. I have a mainstream computer that is pretty powerful. I just get crashes and freezes and runtime errors all over the place. It is the only software application to have this problem on my computer. It seems that many video editing programs are very unstable. I have had better success with Videostudio Pro X2.

In short, Power Director 8 Ultra has many exceptional features which you can try on a trial basis. Even with the trial program,though, it would crash on a regular basis. However, I figured that a purchased copy might avoid this problem. Well, no such luck. I can't put up with that, thus, a return for a full refund, thanks Amazon, which makes returns easy. I am using AVS4YOU's AVS Video Editor...much less expensive, and it works very well. Their other titles are also very functional and you can buy all these titles as a package...very reasonable.

If Cyberlink will fix the crashing problem with Power Director 8 Ultra, I will likely get another copy.
