Check which operating system your PC is currently running How you make the move to Windows 7 depends on your current operating system. - Windows Vista
The transition to Windows 7 should be pretty smooth, although you may need to update your system to the latest service pack first.
- Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. Yea its great. November 20, 2009 Eric Mcdonald (the sticks) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Its good but this should've been free for the travesty that was vista. Usually when you receive a product that is broken its either replaced or exchanged. Welcome to windows 7, it fixes all the problems that vista had for only another $100. Forget that ubuntu is free.
Not Worth the Trouble November 19, 2009 John - Fresh Air (Las Vegas) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
I bought both Windows 7 Home Premium and Windows 7 Professional pre-release. Disregard all of the hype of the last 6 months - Windows 7 is NOT worth the cost, the time, the risks, or the hassles of upgrading. My most reliable computer is still my Windows XP.
With Windows 7 you get slight improvements on the task bar and interface - however - you risk losing your data, having to do a complete reinstall of ALL of your programs, and then - when you finally have it installed - many of your programs will crash with Windows 7.
DO NOT UPGRADE - if you have a working system. The improvements are very marginal and the risk too great.
How much should we pay for this? November 19, 2009 Satisfied customer (Texas) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
The system is OK, But-----. It's very, very irksome to consider that Microsoft, with its incredible resources, produced a major operating system (Vista) which has been almost "universally condemned" as being bloated, slow, still subject to malware, etc., and for which it was paid by the operating systems buyers, and now expects us to pay over $100 for a "new" system which works more like the previous system should have worked in the beginning. If I were to charge you $5000 to paint the outside of your house, and you reasonably expected a professional job, and instead received an inferior job, should I charge you ANOTHER X number of dollars to correct what I did sub-standard before? I don't think so. Microsoft should sell this system for no more than $30-40 for those who previously paid for Vista. Especially since Microsoft will be getting paid for every new computer sold going forward because it will be loaded with Windows 7. Sorry, Bill, but the price of 7 to previous Vista buyers doesn't go down real well.
Clean, quick and worth the upgrade. Media Center is amazing! November 19, 2009 Stanltaaf (Free Lunch, Luna UAE) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
Why you get it: because it does what we've been wanting ever since you bought a digital camera: a respectable home for all your digital photos and videos. It's cleaner code than Vista, XP SP3 and it takes real advantage of the hardware you haven't been using to its real potential because you were told 'Vista stinks' so you stuck with XP.
I did the pre-production release of this (Release Candidate) and run a home DVR on it. That means, I record live HDTV from an antenna, pay no fees to satellite or cable and am THRILLED with the quality. Running it with a dual hard drives in RAID configuration on a recent gen setup (nothing fancy) and you have a mean home theater. Say nothing that you can network all the media together between all your win7 or Vista machines PLUS any XBOX 360 you may have in the house.
In short, this software gets you started on having a smart-home. I've been running it in that configuration and I couldn't be happier. Xbox in the bedroom (good used ones run 150) for watching recorded or live tv. Home theatre pc hooked up via HDMI to the flatscreen in the family room; it boggles the mind that not only do I get to see all my media (TV, home videos) anywhere in the house but it is something that I look forward to.
Note, home premium supports 2 tuners of ATSC or NTSC. To add more you can buy ultimate which gives you more options.
I made a listmania list for the curious folks out there... just search for DVR in listmania.
Easy upgrade from XP Pro November 18, 2009 Steven N. Olsen (Hanford, Ca United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I preordered this and it arrived on the offical availibty date. From start to when it finished, it only took 30 min. Everything worked.... I installed all of the new drivers without problems. The only thing that didn't work was my old Logitech Optical Mouse. I just had to have my middle button/wheel set to double click. I found that by loading the MS Intellimouse software, I was able to program my mouse to my satisfaction. Since the initial install, I have tried to get a wireless adapter that will work with the 64-bit install. That is becoming quite the issue. I'll find one yet.
