Amazon.com Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is the sequel to the game that put class-based, multiplayer team warfare on the map. A long time coming, TF2 was first announced in 1998, but in the years that followed went through various concept and design changes, which left it looking less and less like the beloved original release. Luckily by the time the final version came off the presses and was bundled as part of EA's 2007 release, The Orange Box, it had returned to something very close to the original game. Meet the full team. View larger. | Heavy dropping a few shells. View larger. | Pyro bringing the heat. View larger. | Scout catching some air. View larger. | Gameplay Built around multiplayer battles of two teams, Reliable Excavation Demolition (RED) and Builders League United (BLU), representing competing construction teams, players choose between two game modes: capture the flag (CTF) and a control point mode. In CTF the objective is to obtain a briefcase of intelligence from the enemy team's base and return it to their own base while preventing the opposing team from doing the same. In the control point mode the objective is similar, only related to holding particular territories. To be successful in either the most important thing is to understand and use each character class in the best way possible.A Game That's a Class Operation Unlike other "class-based" games that offer a variety of combat classes only, Team Fortress 2 features a wide variety of classes which provide a broad range of tactical abilities and personalities, and lend themselves to a variety of player skills. All nine playable character classes from the original game are available and although a few of these, like the Medic and Heavy generally work well with any mix of characters, overall each have particular strengths in offensive, defensive and support capacities. Each also will respond dynamically with different comical dialogue when in combat. The full character classes include:- Pyro - An offensive class with average damage tolerance, Pyros are armed with a flamethrower, shotgun and a fire axe.
- Engineer - A defensive class with a low threshold for damage, Engineers can upgrade weapons and equipment and are armed with a shotgun, a pistol and a wrench.
- Spy - Used for sabotage the Spy carries a revolver, a butterfly knife, an electronic zapper and a diguise kit.
- Heavy - Tough on offense and defense the Heavy's weapons are the minigun, the shotgun and his fists.
- Sniper - A support class with low damage tolerance, the Sniper is armed with a sniper rifle, a submachine gun and a machete.
- Scout - The Scout is fast but susceptible to damage. His weapons are a sawed off shotgun, a pistol and a baseball bat.
- Soldier - A slow, but a powerful offensive class, the soldier wields a rocket launcher, a shotgun and a spade.
- Demoman - A defense class with an average amount of protection, the Demoman is armed with a remotely detonated sticky bomb and a bottle of Scotch.
- Medic - Medics keep other characters alive and are armed with a healing 'medigun,' a syringe-firing launcher and a bone saw.
The importance of the abilities of particular classes aside, far and away the dominant factor in Team Fortress 2 and the secret to its popularity, is its clear dedication to fun. This is seen in its rejection of realism in favor of cartoon-style art in the game's graphics, the inclusion of super weapons like lasers and missile launchers hidden within the six standard maps and the attention given to each character's incidental trash talking functionality. Combined, these simply make for fast-paced, over-the-top fun which are the building blocks of any multiplayer shooter.System Requirements: | Minimum Specifications: | Recommended Specifications: | | OS: | Windows Vista/XP/2000 | | Processor: | 1.7 Ghz Processor | Pentium 4 Processor (3.0 Ghz or better) | | RAM: | 512 MB RAM | 1 GB RAM | | Video Card: | DirectX 8 level Graphics card | DirectX 9 level Graphics card | | Other: | DVD-ROM Drive/Mouse/Keyboard/Internet Connection |

LOVE THIS GAME! November 12, 2009 Jason (CA) Such an awesome game. Loved Team Fortress from the beginning. TF2 is twice as good as the original! I sold my Xbox 360 version to get this one because teh PC version has updates that add levels, and items to the characters. Absolutely brilliant game and for such a cheap price!
Great multiplayer game October 24, 2009 Ayush Sobti (Philly) I recently purchased Team Fortress 2 from Amazon because I had $10 credit on my account and this was the best multiplayer game I could find around under $10. It was a great decision.
The DVD arrived in time, and packaged perfectly. No issues of the DVD not being in place or anything. Installation was a breeze. It did include installing Steam which validates your CD key, and also updates the game to the latest version so you can play multiplayer. Steam is a application that attaches itself to your start upa nd rund in the background making sure your game always stays up to date. This is of course optional and can be removed, but its not a system hog and has never got in my way. This game has no single player, btw. I'm currently playing it on my Dell XPS M1530 (waiting for my new gaming build to arrive), and I play it on high details at 1920x1200 on my 28" external display. It has very moderate system requirements because this game, quite like some other great multiplayer games such as Counter Strike etc., relies and sells more on the merit of the gameplay and fun factor rather than eye candy. The characters, environments etc are stylized in a cartoon-ish, comic way.
Multiplayer is top notch. There are always 3000+ servers running, and a good number of them have very low pings, though this depends on your net connection and location, of course. I play on a net connection that gives me about 2.5mbps. I play on pings of 30-40 or less, always with 15-20 players on the server and voice enabled. I have never encountered any lag during multiplayer gameplay. The players online, from my experience until now, are great fun to play with. They aren't overly competitive, rude or disruptive. Kudos to Steam's extremely strict permanent ban rule for maintaining a quality community.
Oh, and sound is pretty good too. I have Logitech Z-5500 THX-Certified 505-Watt 5.1 Digital Surround Sound Speaker System connected to my laptop, and have 5.1 selected in the in-game menu. Sounds great, I almost always hear a spy creeping up on me from behind. This brings me to the in game character classes. There are quite a bunch of them - I'd say somewhere around 10. Each character class has its own weapons and characteristics (speed etc.), and make sure you give each one of them a try. A good team is one that has a good balance of the classes since no single class can be defined as 'a game winner'. So depending on the situation, you may be called upon to play as any class so make sure you give all of them a try.
Can't think of anything else to say for the game except that it's great fun, and I would definitely recommend it. I will remind you again that don't expect ground breaking visuals and realistic Crysis, Far Cry like graphics. This game is not meant to be one of those. Think more along the lines of Serious Sam.
Final verdict: GO ahead and buy the game. At under $10, its a great deal. If I forgot anything, or you have any questions, leave a comment and I will reply ASAP (generally under 12 hours).
Worth buying, but no instructions October 5, 2009 David W. Galbraith (Las Vegas) I've had a lot of fun with this. Players are mostly polite on the mic. Not a lot of official servers and hard to figure out what kind of game you're getting into.
This game has no instructions whatsoever. There is terminology used in the server descriptions that are impossible to understand without googling the heck out of them. Again, NO instructions. There is a wiki that tells you how to use the characters.[...].
I'd rather have a physical guide at my fingertips so I can reference it DURING gameplay instead of having to exit the game to look things up. And I second that it's very difficult finding your way around most maps, so they should have offered a playing guide.
Would be great if they did not get rid of the grenades from the first version. The regular bombs detonate after 3 seconds, giving other players LOADS of time to get away when you throw them. The Sticky Bombs are NOT like proximity charges, either, as you have to manually set them off. Who sets a boobytrap that they have to wait around to monitor, leaving you a target for every other enemy??? This is an extremely fast-paced game, so that was a bad choice by Valve.
The upgrades are never explained. Basically it asks you if you want to accept this "fill in obscure description" upgrade and you click accept of discard. Found myself getting the same "upgrade" 3 times, accidently replacing weapons I NEEDED with stupid sandwiches (again, no instructions telling you what they're for--they give health).
As for the gaming environment, it is a lot of fun interacting with teammates. Psssst! The OTHER team can hear everything you say to your teammates, so forget about strategy planning!
Awesomely Fun Game! September 22, 2009 BarbRJ (USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
My 15 year old son wanted this game -- he loves it. He says it's "awesome"
AMAZING September 14, 2009 O. Al Hammadi (BAH) From the game gurus Valve. period
This game is so awesome, the level up, the upgrades, the weapons, the classes, the new weapons, the servers, everything just adds up to be the game that no FPS enthusiasts should miss.
I played it for a while but then my younger brother, who is an online FPS junky, took it to his PC and was playing day and night, which made my father goes nut as how a game that I bought would let my brother let go of WOW.
But apparently, my brother really loves it, and he is still playing it till date. I recommend this game as a gift, although I would advise you to get it with the orange box as I did, it is a huge value for your hard earned bucks.
