DO NOT Buy this drive! September 3, 2008 I wish to GOD I would have read more reviews and product guides before buying - I am a mobile DJ that just took over a karaoke business. I figured -WHY NOT- get a TB drive to have everything I dj off of plus karaoke on one drive. HUGE MISTAKE!
First off for DJ's - this is slow and more so when using the VirtualDJ program. Between songs a 15-30second lag time. That can be forgiven though as the drive itself is massive.
Here is my own dilemma. I went to pick the drive up and the entire casing fell apart and the hard drive itself fell out! I had a friend who took it and put it in his own computer as a secondary drive to retrieve files. He rendered the whole thing useless and broken. Perhaps I got a defective one but that doesnt help me now.
I have DJ'ed with this drive a mere 3 times and used it maybe 10 times for transfers so its brand new! It is going back to the store for me to find something better which I will be reading reviews for the rest of the night.
As for now - Thank GOD I had all the DJ music backed up on my wife's laptop and a 160gig seagate. I have lost the karaoke job at the bar for now all because of a very faulty product!
Buy and use only at your own risk!
Okay, but slow and no power button September 2, 2008 7200rpm might cut it for a sub-500gb HDD, but it is pretty laggy on this 1tb My Book. Not terrible or a deal-breaker though. Otherwise, this is a pretty decent hard drive which I bought since none of my Western Digital (or Maxtor) hard drives have ever failed me. Looks nice, is rather quiet, and is well vented. Annoying, though, is the lack of a power button on the unit, so it's going to stay on all the time, spinning away, unless you unplug it.
HugesStorage in a small quiet package August 24, 2008 Since I'm sure you understand the basics of an external hard drive so let me make this brief. This drive worked perfectly right out of the box. It is quiet, it is fast, the software provided is garbage trial-ware but you don't really care because you're going to delete it all when you reformat the drive to NTFS anyhow. 1TB for this price is fantastic. I've had the drive a month and it's great.
Best of luck to you.
Well Worth It August 24, 2008 This is my second WD drive and I must say they have not disappointed me one bit. The quietness and durability of these drives are awesome in my opinion. I have own them for over a year and no problem whatsoever. If you really need a large storage external drive, WD is the way to go.
If I need another drive, I would not hesitate to buy another external hdd from WD again. Go Western Digital !!
Frustrating August 22, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got this for use as a backup drive using third party software. I've had a couple other WD drives which I liked fine. This one was a problem from day one, however. There were two major issues:
1) The drive would just randomly unmount/disconnect after a few hours.
2) The drive was painfully slow.
Unfortunately, I had some travel and was past 30 days when I returned. I tried several things -- too many, really -- to try to fix this without success. When I have time, I may remove the drive from the casing and see if it can be salvaged.
Meanwhile, I ordered a SimpleTech drive and it works like a dream, much faster with no complications, for the same price. I will be using SimpleTech in the future.
