1 out of 5 stars Don't even bother if you use a Mac   January 16, 2008
Pretzelcuatl (Los Angeles, USA)
I purchased the 2003 version of this for the Macintosh. It was slowish, but worked, until I upgraded to the next level of OSX, which brought the encyclopedia to a halt. A very nice person at Britannica told me that they were aware of the problem, that it was unfixable for the 2003 version, but all would be ship shape and right as rain in the 2004 upgrade. Amazingly, I fell for it and shelled out more money (I really wanted this thing to work!) Again, it functioned acceptably at first, but as soon as I went to another upgrade of the Mac OS, it was all over.

I won't comment on the content because I can't see it.

If there is a class action suit against these limey bastards, please let me know!!!

1 out of 5 stars EB software does not work with Windows Vista   March 3, 2007

EB own words: "Unfortunately, at this time the Britannica software is not compatible with Windows Vista. We are working on developing another version of the 2007 software that will work on Windows Vista and we are planning to release this version in the upcoming months. Please check back with us in another month or so and we should have some more information about the Vista-compatible software. But, it is entirely possible that we will not have Windows Vista compatible version of the 2007 product available and that we will wait until the development of the 2008 software." They do NOT offer a reasonable on-line subscription.

4 out of 5 stars Accurate, detailed, and comprehensive.   July 3, 2006

You will never find a nicer encyclopedia for $45. I own an 80s version of their printed encyclopedia as well, which I have since abandoned using. The convenience of its search capability (while not the most intuitive around) is excellent compared to old fashioned research. Wikipedia may be free, but as a literate and technical professional, I have personally noted several inaccuracies in its content. Such inaccuracies are far less likely in the contents of Britannica. Additionally, the reference materials and citations refer to legitimate sources, vice other often-flaky websites. They lose 'one star' for lack of a basic zoom function, clutter on the screen that cannot be removed, and static text that -should- behave more like a cascading style-sheet than a jpeg. Fix the GUI, and it's nearly perfect for the money.

5 out of 5 stars A world of complete knowledge   May 20, 2006

My father bought me the Encyclopaedia Briannica 2006, ultimate reference suite. When I install it on my computer, I became extremely happy because it contains everything I needed. It help me to do a lot of projects and home works. It is good for students like me. Really it is a world of knowledge. It's new videos, images, content etc. are very usefull. So I say that everyone should buy this for you and your child. It will help you to know everything in the world. Before buying this I have the Encyclopaedia Britannica 2003, deluxe edition. When comparing these two, The level of 2006, ultimate reference suite is very high. It is little slow, but it is not a problem when compared to the content inside it.

1 out of 5 stars An Overpriced Joke   May 3, 2006

If I could give this excuse for a modern encyclopedia less than one star I would gladly do so. If you can purchase it for ten dollars or less (including shipping), then consider buying it. Otherwise it is a rip-off of dubious value.

The "advanced-level" articles for students and adults are of mediocre quality at best - and very biased, to the point of shameless bigotry in some cases. Britannica exists to inform people, not to pass final (and laughably arbitrary) judgement upon things. However, Britannica "Ultimate" Reference Suite DVD users will find Britannica to be copiously replete with categorical pontifications regarding a wide range of topics; and especially so in respect to ethnography, ethnobotany, and mythology.

The Britannica Reference Suite DVD also has no shortage of embedded propaganda and subtle NLP persuasion techniques. Caveat emptor.

Basically the Britannica Reference Suite software is lacklustre in every regard and of moderate use (at best) for anything beyond the academic needs of 10th graders. And, perchance, if you do have a child and are considering purchasing such a research tool as the Britannica 2006 "Ultimate" Referance Suite DVD markets itself as being, please encourage your child to always bear in mind that although Britannica assuredly presents itself as The Gospel, it is not.

Pay no attention to the man behind the curtain,..
