Bigger isn't always better, but for anyone who enjoyed Pitch Black, a nominal sequel like The Chronicles of Riddick should prove adequately entertaining. Writer-director David Twohy returns with expansive sets, detailed costumes, an army of CGI effects artists, and the star he helped launch--Vin Diesel--bearing his franchise burden quite nicely as he reprises his title role. The Furian renegade Riddick has another bounty on his head, but when he escapes from his mercenary captors, he's plunged into an epic-scale war waged by the Necromongers. A fascist master race led by Lord Marshal (Colm Feore), they're determined to conquer all enemies in their quest for the Underverse, the appeal of which is largely unexplained (since Twohy is presumably reserving details for subsequent "chronicles"). With tissue-thin plotting, scant character development, and skimpy roles that waste the talents of Thandie Newton (as a Necromonger conspirator) and Judi Dench (as a wispy "Elemental" priestess), Twohy's back in the B-movie territory he started in (with The Arrival), brought to vivid life on a vast digital landscape with the conceptual allure of a lavish graphic novel. But does Riddick have leadership skills on his resumé? To get an answer to that question, sci-fi fans will welcome another sequel. --Jeff Shannon

3 out of 5 stars cool new hero for today's youth market and cgi effects!   July 15, 2009
Bob Fake Name (Divided States)

A relative told me it reminded him of "Dune" which I scoffed at because I love David Lynch's "Dune" because
A) I'm a David Lynch fan and
B) I did NOT read Frank Herbert's famous book which maybe would have spoiled the movie if I were to demand it be a faithful adaptation.

Anyway, what he meant was that Chronicles of Riddick had aesthetic similarities with Dune, which is to *some* extent partially true, but Riddick is a cgi movie and so doesn't look the same. I prefer sorta fake models to sort of fake digital ships. I don't quite get how people look at cgi and think it looks real. I suppose it is a very willful suspension of disbelief. Give it a few years and all these cgi movies will look fake and terrible and people will laugh at them.

The plot is messy, the dialog not too bright, the acting campy, but it is a fun ride. I admit it grew on me. Saw some on TV and it doesn't stink as much as I first thought. It looked as if a boardroom in Hollywood had come to the conclusion they need a more urban, "hip" hero for today's youth market or something. Like the scene with the pitbull alien beast. Riddick is *bad* yo! "Ahhh hell, ya done messed up now son, Riddick gonna get ya!" I'm getting old.
2.5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars An Entertaining Mess   June 14, 2009

I won't go into detail, but this sequel to the sleeper hit pitch black is a bit muddled because of so many characters, places, and subplots simply making it too much, but it does have it's moments(death by teacup). Hopefully the sequel will correct these issues because after that conan ending, I'm curious as to if they have anything special in store.

The last dvd in the Chronicles of Riddick really kix butt! I love the graphics and the story line is the kickin' chickin'. I love the, well, won't give it away. It is very well done, exciting and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It's a sci-fi with meaning and FEELING! It rocks!

4 out of 5 stars Vin Diesel makes the movie   May 30, 2009

The necromonger plot is not really my cup of tea. What is my cup of tea is Vin Diesel as Riddick quietly and calmy killing a prison guard with a tea cup. I own this movie and watch it for things like that. I love the character Riddick which I can't imagine anyone playing better. He's not cocky, he's just confident. I love how he kills the prison guard sitting on his chest. So quietly and quickly, then gives a little shrug to the mercenaries. Very cool.

3 out of 5 stars A DESTINY WORTH RE-WRITING?   March 25, 2009

After the success of (Pitch Black),fans were eager for a second helping of the intergalactic fugitive,so Universal served it up.The film's plot is pretty straightfoward,it's been years since the events of (Pitch Black) and Riddick has spent his time running from bounty hunters. While visiting an old friend, their planet is suddenly attacked by a religious force who have been destroying worlds and it's up to Riddick to stop them. The visual effects are top-notch and the script is decent enough. The acting varies, with some actors grossly overplaying their parts and a few managing to deliver some decent performances. The film tries to remain very primal in tone, however, whether the constant grunts and animal acrobatics work or not is up to you (the viewer).Obviously, this film wasn't trying to win any awards,it sought only to deliver a few summer thrills and to bring back a popular character.Though it's a decent sci-fi/action film,it's reputation has suffered from a disgruntled fanbase who couldn't accept anything less than (Pitch Black 2).But don't let their complaints discourage you from seeing this film,it just might blow your mind.
