Chessmaster !0th Edition September 7, 2009 John Sharples (los angeles) This is an excellent product. The Only complaint i have is that you are required to insert the CD every time you play the game. So if you lose or damage this disc you have wasted your money.
Chessmaster September 1, 2009 Don Quixote (CA, USA) Great chess game, will improve people's chess skills no matter what level they play at, in my opinion.
Good value for a good program September 1, 2009 Tommy (Naperville, Illinois United States) This program is a very good value for the beginner/intermediate player. It would be great if you're just getting into or back into chess. Has a lot of good tutorials, and has a decent enough chess engine. Given that most chess engines are at grandmaster level anyway, I'm more interested in if I'm able to "dumb down" the engine to provide a challenging but not guaranteed to be wipe-out game.
Nice graphics as well, good selection of 2D and 3D boards. Never had a glitch with the placement/movement of pieces.
If you apply the patch, it appears that you don't need the CD in the drive. You can get the updates on Ubisoft's site.
If you're looking for a killer beast, go with Rybka or Fritz. They are wildly powerful engines that should wallop you every time. To me, they are more useful as analysis engines if you're going to get that deep into chess.
For good online play, I'd recommend chess.com, it's a well done site. The online play with Chessmaster is a little lacking, I think most folks go to [...]or Internet Chess Club for online play these days, those sites are designed specifically for that.
But for good computer games and lots of extras, highly recommend this program. Especially at the price.
Compare Prices Before You Buy August 24, 2009 Gail Rhea You might be able to save money by buying the "Collector's Edition" instead since the only differences between the 10th Edition and the Collector's Edition are that the Collector's Edition has a fourth CD with a six-month membership to World Chess Live and the packaging and CD labels which must have been done by Encore for the Collector's Edition.
Going over to the Ubisoft support page for the 10th Edition and downloading the 1.0.3 patch enables the game to be played without needing the CD in the drive. The FAQs have other tips as well.
I know that Chessmaster XI and Grandmaster are available, but this is still a great game and the reduced price can't be beat. The 10th Edition is the first time animated chess sets are used in the Chessmaster series and the three sets: Clash, Fairytale, and Rubber (colorful Staunton), probably intended for youthful players, are a lot of fun to watch and hear especially when capturing.
I'm running it on XP Pro and haven't encountered any problems.
New to chess? This is a great place to start. May 16, 2009 * (*) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I bought this several months ago and I am still working through all it has to offer. I can honestly say that my play has improved considerably simply from the tutorials and playing against the "personalities" in CM10. Yes, I had to download the patches, but I don't have to have any discs installed while I am playing. This is easily the best $20 I have spent in my quest to improve my chess.
