Great Way to Learn And Practice Core Chess Drills October 30, 2009 Nick Van Weerdenburg (Toronto, ON Canada) My seven year old is totally engrossed in this. It's a great learning tool because they are playing games that have more meaning in the story to learn certain basics. The toilet smashing bishop training was pretty hysterical. My son freaked out when he tied Grandpa White for the lead.
Chess is about practicing patterns and these patterns don't emerge much in games when kids play. I taught my son to play, but he doesn't want to do drills to learn pawn combat of mating patterns. With a game like this, they get to focus on core chess patterns, as well as feel victorious when doing these drills.
As an interesting fact regarding chess patterns and repetition - in memory studies, Grandmasters who are famous for recalling chess board layouts from past games did only marginally better then the general population when asked to memorize RANDOM arrangements of chess pieces on the board. It's all in the patterns.
The animation and characters are great. The voice acting great. Love it.
By the way- there is a "Chess Complete" version that has all three games on 1 disk. Amazon doesn't list it, but I got it from the Apple Store for my Mac. #3, interestingly, is only on Amazon for Windows, but it does exist for Macs as seen in the Chess Complete product. As Amazon doesn't sell the complete version, I am mentioning this here.
Learning to play chess September 13, 2009 Dorothy Gralow (Larned, Kansas United States) I first saw this product when a friend's child was using it. He really liked it. I then bought it for another child who asked me to teach her to play chess. She told me, "It's really fun and I like the computer game a lot." She was working on teaching me how to play better. It's fun, it's easy, and I've learned stuff.
Great for kids. September 11, 2009 J. Ridpath (Wichita, KS) My kids used this to learn to play chess and became quite good too. I'd highly recommend this game.
A happy 6 yrs old is now learning to play chess with this CD April 8, 2009 J. S. Tan (Stow, OH USA) I first checked out this CD from the public library and my son loves it.
He is learning the basics while having fun, while his little sister is learning by his side.
Fun and useful February 26, 2009 Josephine Legrand (Greenwich, ct) Learn to Play Chess with Fritz and Chesster 2: Chess in the Black Castle
My 6 years old son enjoyed this game very much, though after 4 weeks the novelty is wearing off. It energized him to play and learn more about chess. One advantage is that the game allows kids to play against the computer at any level - which is really why I bought it in the first place. The navigation between learning 'games' is a little slow, even confusing at times - an adult is definetely needed to help at the begining. But now, even though my son no longer plays, he still dreams about beating King Black....
