Amazon.com Review
Show business loves its archetypes. One chestnut that won't go away is the image of the feverish screenwriter, hunched over a word processor, ideas flying so thick and fast that the chore of punctuation would invite creative disaster. Hollywood Screenwriter is a script-writing program that promises to simplify the mundane stuff--like proper script formatting--so creative juices can flow freely.

The only keys a writer needs to move between script elements in this program are TAB, ENTER, and (. Since scripts have a logic and order that's fairly standardized, the program can intuit what's next, placing time of day after scene headings or formatting for dialogue or a parenthetical after a character's name. This is a less-complicated program than some of the more expensive screenwriting programs out there, but it doesn't do as much as those other offerings either.

Hollywood Screenwriter is designed for writing spec scripts: speculative screenplays designed to get the attention of stage or screen producers. This program will help you format your script correctly, ensuring that it won't get tossed out based on appearance. But if someone decides to produce your masterpiece, you won't be able to make a production script with this program. Then again, if that happens, you might feel flush enough to go buy one of those spendy programs that does A and B pages.

No other place clings to dated stereotypes of how things are done quite like Hollywood does. Included in Hollywood Screenwriter's instruction manual are painstakingly detailed instructions on how to assemble a script correctly. Which begs the question: Are there really people out there who would reject a possible Oscar winner because it's not punched by a three-hole press and bound by two solid-brass Acco No. 5 brads? --Anne Erickson

1 out of 5 stars Terrible program   April 25, 2009

It is only good on very old computers. Anyone using XP or above this will NOT work.

2 out of 5 stars Annoyed   January 7, 2009

You get what you pay for. The product is a striped down version of more expensive software. There seems to be dead-end enticements in the program--features that don't do anything, though, they may be available in the more expensive version. I ran into what appeared to be dead-ends, but I don't care to verify that they are indeed dead-ends because the program is annoying to use--you have to insert the CD every time you want to start the program. Nuts to that! It's just one more thing I have to keep track of. Why? Presumably to assure Write Brothers, every time I run their program, that my copy of Hollywood Screenwriter was legally obtained. For the sake of convenience, and ethics (I have to prove I'm honest every time I run the darn thing?), I'd rather pay top whack for a program that doesn't annoy me. I'll be looking into Final Draft, shortly, to see if that is user friendly. One good thing I experienced with this software was the file conversion feature--the program converted an RTF file perfectly.

2 out of 5 stars Not horrible   November 25, 2008

I'm an amateur writer that has this product. It was actually sitting on my shelf for a couple years so maybe there is a newer version that corrects a couple things.

My main #1 issue with this: I wrote and rewrote a screenplay in this software and it was 75 pages. I wanted to then move it over to a format that could be shared. I saved it in RTF format. When I open it up in MS Word or any other standard reader, it came up as 72 pages. One thing that is definitely true, it did not keep any of the page breaks. So now there are page breaks mid dialogue block or separating a character name from dialogue, etc. So I guess I need to go through and add those all back manually in Word. I'm not sure if there are any other aspects (margins) that also now need to be adjusted to make this format accurately.

I also noticed that for screenplay formats it generally gives you the choice between single and double spacing between scene headings. But what I've been reading tells me that it is now standard for scene headings to have triple spacing.

I would say that having it paginate correctly is one of the major reasons why I wanted to use screenwriter software. So this to me is a major drawback.

I will say that typing the screenplay into the software is very simple and intuitive, so if they would correct the ability to get the screenplay into other document formats without it losing some formatting, this would be a great product.

1 out of 5 stars Hollywood Screen Writer Program   March 27, 2008
Cheri A. Christensen
It's a nice program but based on older technology. It won't download to the harddrive.

5 out of 5 stars Unless you're producing a blockbuster, this is what you need!   March 26, 2008
Flowerbug (Fort Washington, MD)
This program is great. The process of writing a screenplay was sped up by the drop down devices employed by this software. It's really easy to use and upload. Yes, you have to leave the disc in your drive in order to use it, but who cares? If all you want is a script that will print onto plain white paper (spell check included), you've found what you need at a very low cost. I was tempted to pay over $100 for the other programs, but decided to stick with this one. All I wanted was a script, and that's what I got from this software. 5 stars!!!!
