Product Description
The United States—the world’s great bastion of freedom—is sliding toward socialism. Recent high-profile bailouts show the walls between government and the private sector are getting thinner each day. Federal control now extends in various ways to education, healthcare, financial markets, real estate, businesses, and religion. And as out-of-control government spending and debt increase accordingly, America is drained of the economic and political strength its people fought and worked so hard to achieve. But it isn’t too late to save the land of the free. Saving Freedom is Senator Jim DeMint’s firsthand account of the unsettling socialist shift—behind-the-scenes actions in Congress that are changing the character of our nation. He illuminates key principles of freedom and how they are being compromised by big government. More important, DeMint lays out a complete action plan to reclaim America’s freedom based on legislation that would reduce debt, fix Social Security, and provide a tax credit for every family to buy health insurance. The plan also emphasizes reversing America’s cultural decline by restoring a strong spirit of God and country. Jim DeMint's passion for the cause of individual liberty and personal responsibility is evident in this manifesto. It needs to be read—and acted upon—by every citizen of this republic." — Newt Gingrich, former Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives "Jim DeMint has delivered a ‘how to’ plan for avoiding a future that we neither want nor deserve. For those of us who want to keep America the ‘land of the free and the home of the brave,’ Saving Freedom is a must read!" — Oliver North, USMC (Ret.), author of New York Times best seller American Heroes "Once again, as we did in 1776, Americans must choose between freedom and oppression. In Saving Freedom, Jim DeMint describes the clear and present danger posed by big government - and what we must do to preserve individual liberty and personal responsibility. Every American needs to read this book." — Sean Hannity, host of the Sean Hannity Radio Show and Hannity's America on FOX News Channel "It's comforting to know that someone like Jim DeMint is standing in the gap as we see so many of our nation's founding principles eroding. I view Saving Freedom as a blueprint for the effort that all concerned Americans must join to restore and protect the freedoms we depend on." — Steve Forbes, president and chief executive officer of Forbes and editor-in-chief of Forbes magazine |

An honest look at excessive idealism. November 13, 2009 Michael J. Rollins (North Providence, R.I.) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Senator Jim DeMint may be a reformed sinner. He certainly is a sinner! In "Saving Freedom" DeMint details his sins, and those of far too many other politicians. We all can learn from their mistakes.
Fantasy History for Fantasy Loving Readers November 7, 2009 trastevere (rome, italy) 1 out of 3 found this review helpful
America has never been more firmly in the grip of Wall Street and an entrenched group of Billionaires. These hedge fund managers, oil executives, and financiers of all stripes have just raked in billions of dollars from the federal government so that they can continue to fight to lower wages, impoverish the middle class and rape the heartland (while poisoning it with additives, hormones, and clauses that raise your interest rates to 30% and cut your insurance the minute you get sick). America is a fairy tale come true for corporate raiders and capitalists traders. Families like Bush, Hunt, Icahn, and hundreds of others have been given free reign of the economy-- and they've made the biggest grab of cash in the history of the world-- and it's come from the poor and the middle class. Anybody who tells you that this is the time of socialism must think you're the dumbest person in the history of the world!!!! And maybe you are. No, definitely YOU are!
Very Enlightening November 2, 2009 J. Hagg If you are desiring like me to understand why the United States government is making such insane choices, this well written, understandable book, written by a U.S. Senator, will enable you to do so. Face it, we are morally as well as as financially bankrupt. Since the days of FDR our government officials have been operating outside the bounds of the Constitution and our country is paying the price for their actions. We are fast headed toward becoming a socialist nation, rather than the republic which our founding fathers so wisely set up. Healthcare, insurance, what our tax dollars are used for, education, farming, the environment, the list is long, are all being run by the federal government, instead of state and local governments, which is how the Constitution set them up to be run. Also, Americans are becoming evermore dependent on the government to support them, which is socialism.
DeMint rightly says that while the government should not dictate people's religious persuasion, for any nation to have a strong moral and economic base, their government must be based on the Judeo-Christian moral values set forth in the Scriptures. This nation was founded upon these principles, which enabled us to become the symbol of freedom for oppressed people the world over. Also, our wise founding fathers set up a government with as little government intervention into the lives of ordinary Americans as possible. This enabled our free enterprise system to flourish. The free enterprise system is under attack by neo-conservatives and liberals, who want a socialist government. As DeMint says,"The most foundational principle of freedom-spiritual, economic and political freedom-is built on the voluntary actions of capable, morally guided individuals. Freedom is indivisible in the sense you can't have political freedom (i.e. democracy) unless you first have spiritual and economic freedom."
Smart Strategies for Stopping Socialism October 6, 2009 Larry Underwood (Scottsdale, AZ) Jim Demint is a good old boy Senator from the state of South Carolina, with a refreshingly honest and homespun perspective of the state of Obama Nation. He's right on the money when he sees this country sliding down the abyss of socialism, but what makes this book so compelling is he's got a solid game plan to keep that from happening.
Senator Demint is not just "whining" about what's going on; he's throwing down the gauntlet and giving the American people a tangible plan of attack to stop the insanity. We should be grateful for this advice; now, we need to heed it.
As the Senator so vehemently states, it's time to stop the waste and destructive nature of big (tax & spend) government; although his southern charm keeps him from being as blunt as a guy like the tenacious & irreverent Glenn Beck, Demint's message to the American people is similar: It's time to put the reigns on the tax & spend liberals/socialists/idiots who are sending this country down the destructive path of total economic & social chaos.
Clearly, this country could use more Senators like Jim Demint running around Washington, DC. We'd all sleep a lot better if that were the case. Let's hope they read this book and follow the instructions. I'd settle for that.
The I's have it September 28, 2009 K. Dees 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
I do not enjoy books that revolve around the authors personal experience. That is what Biographies are for. I didn't read past the first three chapters. I wanted to learn more about freedom and socialism, not the Senators own personal thoughts and experiences. Maybe I will eventually read more (and probably should before passing judgment) but I don't feel like I am gaining any knowledge.
