Melina Kanakaredes has the kind of warm, easy accessibility upon which long television careers are founded. The popularity of Providence--in which Kanakaredes plays Sydney Hansen, a plastic surgeon who returns home to find more meaning in her life--rests mostly on her shoulders, though certainly the rest of the cast is an engaging lot: Paula Cale plays Joanie, Syd's single-mom sister; Mike Farrell (formerly BJ Honeycutt of M*A*S*H) plays her veterinarian father, who relates better with animals than people; Seth Peterson is her rapscallion younger brother Robbie; and Concetta Tomei haunts Syd's dreams as her mother, who dies in Providence's pilot episode. Story-wise, the show is all over the map--soap opera (every family member goes through many relationship traumas), melodrama (in only the second episode, Syd saves an autistic girl from being institutionalized), comedy (in the fifth season, Robbie and his wife open a B&B, only to be plagued with skunks), suspense (a thug tries to murder a lovable drug-sniffing dog), even political thriller (when Syd dates a married congressman, blackmail erupts).

The Providence Collection is something of a greatest hits collection, so weddings, births, and christenings dominate the selected episodes. The writing can be awkward and obvious, but the capable cast holds everything together, and there's no denying that every episode keeps things lively by packing in at least three interweaving storylines. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars One Of Those Shows I Feel Silly For Liking But Like It I Do   April 23, 2008
Despite its flaws I genuinely like this series. It's a sort of classy, well-written, stylish forerunner to Gilmore Girls, even though the series seemingly have little in common beyond their production values and intelligence. I wish Providence's complete season by season release would hurry out onto DVD. As it is, these highlights have to do for now and they're nice to see.

5 out of 5 stars Great Series but why not the whole series on dvd?   January 26, 2008

I loved this show. They carry it on Lifetime Real Women which I do not get. I loved the DVD. However some of the episodes they showed were not the best. They skipped all of Jim's being shot, Robbie's son being premature and Tina's post Partum Depression. They skipped great episodes like when Hannah was a a baby and found the gun in the toybox, etc. Why did they not put the whole series on dvd? And who can we talk to about it?

2 out of 5 stars Ok   December 14, 2007
I would have liked to have seen the entire series released with the original theme song. I think everyone got cheated because in my
opinion this was a quality television show. Having said that, I would still recommend it to everyone.

4 out of 5 stars Where's the Theme Song?   October 15, 2007

I too am VERY DISAPPOINTED that they didn't use the original theme song on this DVD set!!! What were they thinking??? Why wouldn't they have done that - it makes no sense at all!!!! I didn't even get to watch all of the set yet due to time constraints, but why in the world aren't they selling them by season like every other tv series?? I would like to have every single episode - this was my favorite show of all time!!! If they do decide to do every season on DVD, which I HOPE THEY DO, Please use the original theme song in the beginning!!!!! Other than that, you can't go wrong with any episode!!! It was something I looked forward to every Friday night!

4 out of 5 stars Home again ;)   June 28, 2007
It's such a nice Tv series and so is the Dvd box. It's such a pleasure to watch the Hansons capeing with everyday problems but always counting on family. I guess there could be some more episodes in this box but still it's a nice selection that portrays the most important personal events of all family members.

So, everybody who enjoys American family life and a little heartwarming drama - The Providence Collection is the right choice for you!

Greetings from Germany

Mark
