Generations have grown up with the Peanuts gang in print and onscreen, but in the 1970s, television specials like A Charlie Brown Christmas and It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown were only a few years old. Their incredible popularity fueled Charles Schulz to create a flurry of new Peanuts TV specials about everything from election day to holidays like Thanksgiving and Easter. While Charlie Brown figures prominently in each special, he's not always the primary focus; in this remastered, six-show compilation, Schroeder, Sally, Snoopy, and Woodstock each get a chance to shine. In the never-before-seen-on-DVD "Play It Again, Charlie Brown," Schroeder is completely obsessed with Beethoven, and no amount of scheming or flattery on Lucy's part can get Schroeder's attention until she provides him with an opportunity to make his stage debut. Unfortunately, overlooked details derail the concert and any chance of Lucy making a good impression on Schroeder. When the polls show that Charlie Brown has absolutely no chance of being elected student body president at his school in "You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown," Lucy convinces Linus to step up to the challenge. Joe Cool makes an appearance in support of Linus's campaign, but as in most politics, Linus's big plans for the presidency lead to little action. Anxiety over school consumes Sally, Peppermint Patty, and Charlie Brown in "There's No Time for Love, Charlie Brown," and a field trip gone wrong does nothing to lessen their discomfort.

"A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving" is probably the best-known special in this compilation and finds the wishy-washy Charlie Brown unexpectedly hosting a Thanksgiving dinner for all his friends. Relying on Snoopy and Woodstock to set up a table in the backyard and prepare an unorthodox meal of popcorn and toast, Charlie Brown somehow manages to pull off a Thanksgiving celebration that honors the true spirit of the holiday. Another first on DVD, "It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown" is the delightful story of Snoopy's and Woodstock's search, à la Sherlock Holmes, for Woodstock's missing nest, and "It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown" finds Marci mangling the tradition of dying eggs and Linus eagerly anticipating the appearance of the Easter Beagle. The 12-minute bonus special about the creation of Snoopy's sidekick, Woodstock, sheds light on how Snoopy's nemesis was created in the 1960s and how the cute little bird quickly evolved into Snoopy's valued companion and friend. Relive your childhood with this wonderful Peanuts collection and be sure to share these timeless shows with the next generation. (Ages 2 and older) --Tami Horiuchi

3 out of 5 stars Classic yes, but the assortment isn't as strong as the 1960's volume   October 24, 2009

The second collection of Charlie Brown films, assembled according to the decade of their release (in this case it's the 1970s), suffers from a lack of well-known Charlie Brown classics. Making the whole set even more unfortunate is the fact that it's made up of little films which were typically used as accompaniments on the main rereleases of the big hitters. For example, You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown can be found as the extra for the It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown disc. For the fans of Schulz's work who've bought up the discs and VHS tapes as they were released, this is going to feel like an extras disc without a main features package to back it up.

Play It Again, Charlie Brown (1971)

There is a point in Charlie Brown lore where having the main character's name in the title just doesn't really fit and this is one of those instances. The story focuses on Lucy's crush on Schroeder despite his single minded love for his classical musician love: Beethoven. Lucy attempts to work her way into Schroeder's heart by offering him an opportunity to play Beethoven at a PTA meeting only to have a wrench thrown into the cogs when the PTA asks for a rock concert instead. Will Schroeder play in the impromptu rock band? Or will he remain loyal to Beethoven?

You're Not Elected, Charlie Brown (1972)

It's hard not to think to the election-oriented episodes of West Wing with this one; lots of polling and public perception issues arise as it's revealed that no one wants Chuck to be the new student body president. Linus, however, is a different story. Sally rallies behind Linus and launches a highly successful campaign until Linus makes a critical error. Can Linus's image survive his final speech blunder? Will he keep his promises? It's politics as usual in this fun little short.

There's No Time For Love, Charlie Brown (1973)

All the rumors and ruminations surrounding the relationship between Peppermint Patty and Marcie (if you don't know what I'm talking about, look it up) start here. The final project of the school year has arrived and Charlie Brown needs a good grade on a paper about the art museum to keep from falling into academic disarray. Unfortunately for them, they wander into a supermarket and mistake it for the art museum (go public school systems, go!). Through it all a love triangle between Marcie, Patty and Chuck arises leading to an odd relationship between the trio that outlives the story.

A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving (1973)

If there's one heavy hitter in the bunch it's this one. Easily the one in the group that begs to be watched annually, the gang imposes a Thanksgiving feast upon Charlie Brown by inviting themselves over to his place. However, it should come as no surprise to you that Chuck is ill-prepared to provide a Thanksgiving quality meal and his guests find themselves sorely disappointed by his offerings (namely Peppermint Patty) until they remember that it was never Charlie Brown's idea that they come over. Just as things begin to settle, Charlie Brown has a solution dropped into his lap.

It's A Mystery, Charlie Brown (1974)

Snoopy's little bird friend Woodstock has his home (a nest, for the nature-ignorant) stolen and the canine-bird duo go off in Sherlock Holmes apparel looking to find the thief. After pestering all the typical Charlie Brown characters, the two sleuths discover the perpetrator of the home burglary and steal it back. However, when the accidental thief complains to Charlie Brown about their missing science project the black-zigzag shirted boy puts the pieces together and so begins the life lesson.

It's The Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown (1974)

Here we have what could have been the set's second qualifying heavy-hitter, but it just lacks the same wit and parallelism that makes its other holiday counterparts so memorable. The Great Pumpkin had a really great, albeit heavyhanded, analysis of faith but the Easter Beagle never comes close to anything deep. The kids are preparing for Easter and in the process mess up boiling eggs for dying (Marcie), building birdhouses (snoopy) and begging people to relax so the Easter Beagle can handle it for them (Linus). There's no single purpose for this one and it feels rather disjointed compared to the others on the set. This should have been the other annual installment in the set, unfortunately there's little reason to ever watch it after the first run.

DVD Bonus Features:

Just as the 1960s set had an excellent featurette on Vince Guaraldi, this one take a close look at one of the more amusing background characters: Woodstock. Like Snoopy, Woodstock manages to convey all his thoughts through physical humor and chicken scratches which bear a striking resemblance to binary. It's a really nice and deserved piece but as the only extra it leaves the set feeling somewhat barren - making it even more noticeable that it's lacking in featured cartoons.

It doesn't seem fair to blame the set. After all, if you're going to do it by decade the 70s are going to suffer in comparison to the 60s sets, but in which case you might wonder why not group them in a different way so that each box will be worth purchasing.

5 out of 5 stars Peanuts transcends time...   October 18, 2009

... but I guess you have to chop these sets into affordable sizes somehow. There really isn't a 60's Peanuts versus a 70's Peanuts. Peanuts will always exist in middle class mid-century America. It's exclusively a child's world that is presented, with all adult voices just coming across as a "mwah mwah mwah mwah" sounding drone, which is no doubt what you heard when adults spoke and you were a child and no doubt what your own children really hear when you speak.

Charlie Brown is a child everyman with dreams who exists in a world with a sometimes cruel pecking order. Lucy is always besting him, but Charlie Brown's own dog bests Lucy with nothing more than the threat of a slobbery kiss. The episodes teach lessons that in many cases, sadly, could not be taught today. For example, from the 60's specials, A Charlie Brown Christmas has Charlie Brown wondering what Christmas is all about. In the end, as an answer, Linus presents the simple Biblical tale of Jesus' birth. The moral comes across as "Christmas is not about getting more stuff", and in the 60's did not ignite a firestorm - as it would today no doubt - of people claiming they were offended by the "exclusivity of the message" so that you had to water down the message to the point where there is no message at all.

The only complaint I can offer is that we are getting only one extra feature in this set on the subject of Woodstock.

5 out of 5 stars More than Just a Peanuts Special to me   October 18, 2009

Thirty-five years ago, at the age of seven, I saw "It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown" one evening during it's first airing back in 1974. Complete with all the "Dolly Madison" commercials. I watched with emotional attachment as Woodstock tried and tried to build that little nest while using the invisible "elevator" to bring piles of sticks up to his house. What an interesting concept that a bird needed an elevator. But it was when Snoopy saved that same sweet little bird from drowning in a bird bath that I was forever attached to these "animals" that were to be a continual part of my world since. The eclectic, melancholy music of this Peanuts special is so moody, cool and mysterious that the whole experience was never forgotten. It really impacted me. Since then, I had the opportunity to speak to Charles Schulz and Bill Melendez in their lifetime to say these same words to them. Mr. Schulz then mailed me a Snoopy and Woodstock watercolor depicting the two hugging on Snoopy's doghouse stating, "A friend is someone who'll share his home with you." [...] because of that night in 1974! So, to see "It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown" again in vivid color and optimum sound reproduction in 2009 is truly a marked event for me. I hope someone else finds this episode as moving as I did.

These specials are very good and ones I would definitely get. Of course there are some things to be said about voicing. Like in Play it Again, Charlie Brown Lucy does not have the best voice.

Another thing I found weird in that special was some lines were repeated twice. Lucy said "Maybe your right, maybe it will work" 2 times and I thought that was weird.

Also in It's a Mystery, Charlie Brown Peppermint Patty had a bad voice but since she had a small part it was OK. One of my favorites is There's no Time for Love, Charlie Brown that one was good.

I love It's the Easter Beagle, Charlie Brown. That was really funny with Marcie and not knowing what to do with the eggs. One of my other reviews explains it better.

Anyway I can't wait to get this because I love these specials and I love Peanuts.
