WEEDS, you dont need the marijuana to get addicted October 30, 2009 Christopher Perpich I love this show! Especially this season and the last, every season just gets better and better. The seasons in Agrestic were great, but Ren Mar or wherever they move in the middle of the season are soooo much better. I love how Nancy get deal with things and acts less mature than her 14 year old son. Also this season gave Justin Kirk (Andy) a real acting job, he was hysterical and serious at the same time (I LOVE IT WHEN HE GROWS HIS BEARD). I also liked the guy who plays Estaban Reyes, he can't decide who to listen to, his wife or his boss. Kate de Castillo gives a performance that is great, you love her and you hate her at the same. Elizabeth Perkin's acting ability in the couple of seasons have been criminally overlooked, but hopefully this year she'll be recognized again at the awards, she's hysterical. Constant paranoia, trying to out-Nancy Nancy, how could she be so cruelly overlooked. Alexander Gould (Shane) gives another award worthy performance, from losing his virginity last season, to STDs, gunshot wounds, and alcoholism this season, that's a lot to deal with! This is season probably isn't the best season, but it had the best finale of all the seasons (well its tied with season 2, but that left too many questions). I can't wait until season 6 premieres next summer!
Fast moving entertainment. October 15, 2009 P. Stein (Beavercreek, OH) Constant entertainment with no slow spots. Best if all seasons are watched in order.
For those that haven't seen it, there is a lot of nudity, sex, violence, vulgar language. Yet the show would be worth seeing in a PG format. I finally added Showtime, just to get this series. Season 5 actually improves on previous seasons. The season is heavily devoted to Nancy Botwin's relationships with the Mexican drug gang, and her love affair with the mayor of Tijuana. Mary Louise Parker is gorgeous.

If you have higher (no pun intended) than average standards for television I'm afraid you will find season 5 of Weeds disapointing. Of course it's still better than most shows on the air, but this season's plot was nowhere near as good as previous seasons. The quality of the writing has declined significantly.
On the other hand, if you're not all that picky about writing quality and are just looking forward to seeing your favorite characters again, by all means, add this DVD to your shopping cart! Certainly there's at least a laugh or two guaranteed in each episode.
The season picks up right where season 4 left off with Nancy's life in peril. Lucky for Nancy, Mary Louise Parker is the star of the show so Nancy is indeed allowed to live. She spends the season dealing with the fallout from last year's cliffhanger. Her affection for the drug kingpin boyfriend changes from episode to episode; one minute she's terrified he's going to kill her and the next she's madly in love.
The strongest performance of the season is easily Justin Kirk as Andy. He effortlessy shuffles Andy back-and-forth between moments of silliness and seriousness. At times he's the feckless, pleasure-seeking Andy of the past, but he also finds time to stand-in and parent Nancy's sons, have a serious adult relationship and get stern with his sister-in-law when necessary.
Unfortunatley the other original supporting cast members continue to feel out of place in the new setting. So much so that Doug, Celia, and even Silas seemed to exist in a completely different show. This simply doesn't work. It was the main problem with season 4 and it continues to be a problem in season 5.
There you have it. I'd say rent before you buy.
Oh, Alexander Gold as Shane also has an interesting story-arc this season and gives an excellent performance.
Weeds doesn't stop entertaining October 1, 2009 Ellen (Redondo Beach, CA USA) Having picked up Weeds in the 5th season on Showtime, I needed the back story. Don't miss this and all other seasons of Weeds. Entertainment at its finest.

I have Shotime just for this series and I have to say that this season was excellent. It kept me hanging on from start to finish. If you like this series at all this is a must see. I can't wait for the next season because this season was wrapped up to hook you.
