Product Description Scrooge the ultimate victorian miser hasnt a good word for christmas though his impoverished clerk cratchit and nephew fred are full of holiday spirit. But in the night scrooge is visited by spirits of another color. Straightforward adaptation of dickens-catians black & white version also Studio: Legend Films Inc. Amazon.com This British production of Dickens's Christmas Carol has been eclipsed by subsequent versions, but it stands on its own as a darkly atmospheric (if sometimes regrettably brisk) telling of the beloved tale. Even with the rough quality of existing prints, this Scrooge has a visual intensity that approaches the bold compositions of German expressionism. And in its central role it has a mostly forgotten star: Sir Seymour Hicks, one of the era's celebrated English stage actors. With his gnarled face and flyaway hair, Hicks looks every inch the mean old misanthrope, and his cruelty has a realistic quality missing in some of the more stylized interpreters of the role. Hicks had played Scrooge many times on stage (and before in silent film), and he gets the tenor of every "Humbug!" just right. As a bandy-legged Bob Cratchit, Donald Calthorp is a perfect Victorian illustration come to grinning life. --Robert Horton

Extremely poor quality edited version August 25, 2009 Richard in Indy 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Having purchased other colorized dvd's from Legend Films, I was anxious to see this little 1935 gem in color. Legend Films has a patented process that makes colorization look much better and more natural than others. As mentioned by other reviewers, this is a heavily edited version of the film with 18 crucial minutes deleted. It would be more aptly titled "HIGHLIGHTS FROM A CHRISTMAS CAROL". The biggest disappointment is the picture quality. One feels like they're watching through a layer of gauze or through a screen door (the picture is VERY fuzzy). There is also a nearly constant "flicker" to the picture. It is a very poor so-called "restoration". Legend Films really let me down on this one. For the best quality full 78 minute restored version of this classic, buy the one from Image Home Video.
Good version July 29, 2009 R. Culp If you've never seen this version before, you need a copy of it. I recommend it. We watch it every holiday season.
IMAGE VERSION ONLY-NO TO LEGEND!!!!! July 6, 2009 larryj1 (az) The Image version of "Scrooge" is the only decent release of the full-length version available. The only issue with the Image version seems to be with the transfer, as the dark scenes have a somewhat annoying picture quality. Regardless, there is not a better release out there. Stay away from Legend. Their so-called restorations are a joke, if not outright fraud. Why would anyone watch their edited version when a complete one is available(not to mention the despicable practice of colorizing films).
Boiled with his own pudding February 14, 2009 Paul Lebrun (Eastern Townships, Quebec, Canada) This version of Scrooge is more like a soft horror picture than some of the more musical versions. The signature has a feeling of german expressionism with cutting contrast and harsh brillance.
Very good transfer, image quality very clear.
GOOD VERSION January 22, 2009 KAREL R. GOTTLIEB (FERNLEY, NV USA) This is a good version of the many versions of the "Christmas Carol". Despite it age, the print was decent and very watchable.
