Amazon.com Watching the smart, sexy, sophisticated, and more than a bit naughty Burke's Law is like entering Hef's swinging pad for a little Playboy After Dark action. Gene Barry, in his Golden Globe-winning role, stars as Amos Burke, a millionaire playboy. He is described as "a bon vivant, elegant, an attractive man." He also happens to be a police captain in charge of homicide. "It's what he does best," his partner explains. Well, not quite. He's better at juggling a bevy of beautiful ladies. "We have a nodding acquaintance," he smooth-talks one. "You say `nodding' about marriage and that's the way I like it." Inevitably, his trysts are interrupted by word that a murder has been committed and a body found. Then, it's off to the crime scene in his chauffeur driven Rolls Royce (piloted by the trusty Henry, portrayed by scene-stealer Leon Lontoc). Fun enough, but what further distinguishes Burke's Law is its dazzling array of stellar suspects; former Hollywood greats, contemporary stars, comedians, indelible character actors, and fresh-faced up-and-comers. Just dig this line-up for the episode, "Who Killed Billy Jo?": Cesar Romero, Phil Harris, Tina "Ginger" Louise, Ida Lupino, Ken Berry as a swinging partygoer, and in a surprising cameo, David Niven as a bumbling juggler. Gary Collins provides some potent youth appeal as Tim, a go-getting new detective and fount of arcane information related to each case. But he's no match for "the old captain," who dispenses his own brand of wisdom, such as, "Never drink martinis with a beautiful suspect," and "Never grow up; you'll grow old," punctuating each aphorism with, "Burke's law." A cop show like no other, Burke's Law's pleasures are anything but guilty, from the seductive voice that purrs, "It's Burke's Law" during the opening credits to guessing which star is the culprit. Wally Cox? Carl Reiner? Frankie Avalon? Carolyn Jones was nominated for a Golden Globe for her virtuoso quadruple role as sisters in "Who Killed Sweet Betsy?" and Barry himself has a high time with his dual role as a lookalike murder victim in "Who Killed Snookie Martinelli?" Almost worth the price of this set is the prologue in which Barry's Snookie regales his exhausted all-night party guests with an energetic rendition of "C'est Si Bon." How `60s can you get? As a welcome bonus for classic TV buffs, each disc contains vintage 1963 commercials (Arnold Palmer for L&M cigarettes--"He's been smoking them for years"). You're still deciding whether to order this? "Don't think about it, just do it." That's Burke's law! --Donald Liebenson

Overall i rate it 5 stars. Worth watching, if you want to see a show with a few strange twists and turns and a good plot line. Enjoyed it.

EVERY EPISODE HAS ABOUT 7 TO 10 GUEST STARS. SEASON 1,VOLUME 1 IS BETTER THAN VOLUME 2
IN MY OPINION. SOME OF THE ACTOR'S THAT WERE NOT GUEST STAR'S ARE VERY WELL KNOWN NOW.

Wonderfully entertaining show and truly excellent restoration job! May 4, 2009 Marty Gillis (Los Angeles, CA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
As someone who buys a LOT of TV series on DVD, both old and new, I am really happy with this box set. VCI Entertainment really outdid themselves with these and it is obvious to anyone who remembers this show from the 60's or even the current reruns on the American Life cable station , that these new transfers have given Burke's Law a new life. The first season was shot in 1963-64 and the restoration by VCI cleaned up both the video and audio portions with the series now looking and sounding better than it ever did on my old 26 inch Magnavox B&W set back in '63 using an antenna. (pre cable days, boy am I getting old!)
As with anything, it is not perfect, with a few digital glitches (looking like missed frames or motion artifacts) and a minor menu annoyance that has the cursor defaulting to the 2nd show in the 4 show menu each time rather than the first. But the glitches are very few and far between and the menu glitch is easily remedied by just selecting the show you want manually.
If you enjoy 60's television and murder mystery/cop shows in particular then you just can't go wrong with this set. The weekly guest stars read like a who's who in Hollywood back in the day. This show really take me back in time and the vintage commercials that are included on each disc as an extra are a real hoot, especially the cigarette ads.
The documentation and packaging is all well done and I really felt like I got my money's worth.
Burke's Law February 11, 2009 Elizabeth R. Boykin My husband and I love vintage TV and this series is wonderful. Gene Barry is great as Amos Burke and so pleasing to the eye. They just don't make 'em like that anymore. It's a pleasure to watch something without the music (if you can call all that booming "music")drowning out the dialouge.
A MODERN DAY "BAT MASTERSON"! January 14, 2009 Noel Serrano (Tampa, Florida United States) There were stylistic similarities to Barry's previous series, Bat Masterson, in which he had played the debonair dandy Bat Masterson in the Old West. During the opening credits, as the title flashed onscreen, a woman's voice was heard seductively pronouncing the words "It's Burke's Law!" The title also reflected the character Burke's habit of dispensing wisdom to his underlings in a professorial manner, e.g. "Never ask a question unless you already know the answer. Burke's Law."
The title of each episode started with the words "Who Killed..." with the name or description of the victim (who died in the show's opening minutes) completing it.
In the original series, other characters were Detective Tim Tilson (Gary Conway), Detective Les Hart (Regis Toomey), Sergeant Ames (Eileen O'Neill), and Henry, Burke's Asian chauffeur Leon Lontoc. The character of Tilson was that of a go-getting young man whose ability to find clues and trace references didn't result in his solving the murders, being always outflanked by Burke's cool intuition.
In several episodes Anne Francis appeared as female detective Honey West, which led to a short-lived spin-off series. This was a gem of a show and another hit for Gene Barry, Television's Cary Grant.
