Does the job well November 11, 2009 07upsydaisy (West Coast) While this DVD teaches the four coins of quarter, dime, nickel and penny as well as the one dollar bill, it does so without a lot of fancy animation. If your child is expecting a cartoon-style learning DVD, they will be disappointed. This DVD has two children who interact mainly with Wendy, an adult teacher, receiving instruction.
That being said, it is definitely effective. Your child will learn the four coins and the dollar bill, how many coins in each denomination it takes to make one dollar, and how to count how much money they have "in their piggy bank" by making what Wendy calls a money worm. (Putting coins in order to count.) They will also learn the dollar and cent sign. Very little instruction is given to understanding a more complex amount such as $3.62 or higher amounts like $50.00. No five, ten or twenty dollar bill is shown or even alluded to.
My son started watching this when he was two and a half years old. At nearly three, he knows the names of all the coins and what they are worth. He can identify the dollar and cent sign and if asked, can correctly say an amount such as $2.00 or .23 cents. (He knows his numbers up to 100, though) I would not say he understands these amounts are what he would need to buy an item, nor would he be able to count out the correct amount from a pile of coins and dollar bills to make that purchase. I suppose in time that "light bulb" will come on for him.
Overall, this is a DVD I would recommend to a friend of a child who can sit through an informal classroom-style learning format. Through repetition, I think all children will learn the concept of basic money.
Great for learning coin values, not so great for teaching how to count money September 25, 2009 L. Jobe This DVD did teach my 3-year-old all the coin values which was great. However, in order to actually count the money, the child will need to know not-so-basic addition (my child only knows basic addition). For example, the child might need to know 50 + 25 = 75. I can't really say it actually teaches counting money (although it does teach all the steps you need to take before you get there), especially for the younger ages...but I do think it is a worthwhile video.
money dvd June 9, 2009 Sharon K. Kirby (Kerrville, TV) Great dvd for counting money in my special ed class. Students don't get bored.

Does not keep child's interest for more than 10 minutes - sort of slow moving for children under 3 or 4

We just got this DVD a few weeks ago....and it is definitely a house favorite! My children (3, 5, and 8) all enjoy it! The songs are cute and catchy- I am impressed. I bought the Telling Time one forst, but went back and bought all of the others in the series. This series really does engage my children- all of them! I would recommend this group purchase instead.
