Gameplay
New Super Mario Bros. Wii, like all the previous releases in the Super Mario Bros. franchise is a side-scrolling platforming game where players collect coins as they attempt to make their way through progressively more difficult game levels using their ability to time jumps over obstacles and avoid a slew of enemies. But although the game contain several well-deserved nods to previous games in the series in the form of iconic characters like Mario, Luigi and two Toads, as well as familiar enemies, sound effects and levels, it is not simply another trip down Mario Bros. memory lane. Taking advantage of the flexibility and power of the Wii and Wii Remote, New Super Mario Bros. Wii manages to preserve the retro experience that fans love about the series, while adding new game features. Notable additions among these include, expansive play levels and new powerups and characters, but by far the most important, and in fact game-defining new feature is simultaneous multiplayer.

A Franchise First: Simultaneous Multiplayer
Since the very first Super Mario Bros. game took the world by storm in the late 1980s gamers anxious to get into the action have patiently and impatiently waited their turn as the infamous 'player 2.' Those days are no more. In New Super Mario Bros. Wii players can now navigate the side-scrolling worlds alone as before or invite up to three others to join them at the same time, on the same level, at any point in the game for competitive and cooperative multiplayer fun. With the multiplayer mode, the newest installment of the most popular video game franchise is designed to bring yet another type of family entertainment into living rooms and engage groups of friends in fast-paced Super Mario Bros. fun.

Controller Choices Via the Wii Remote
In another nod to the series' Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) roots, the Wii Remote controller used with New Super Mario Bros. Wii is held sideways, allowing for easy, classic inputs using the D-pad to direct playable characters, the 1 button to jump and 2 button to spit out projectiles like snowballs and fireballs. In addition, players can access powerups with their choice of either the push of a button, or by shaking the Wii remote, again demonstrating the perfect merging of classic gameplay and modern game design which is New Super Mario Bros. Wii.

Key Game Features

  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii offers a combination of cooperation and competition. Players can pick each other up to save them from danger or toss them into it.
  • Supports 2-4 players in multiplayer mode.
  • Mario, Luigi and two Toads are all playable characters, while many others from the Mushroom Kingdom make appearances throughout the game. Players can even ride different Yoshi characters and use their tongues to swallow enemies – or their fellow players.
  • In some areas, players use the motion abilities of the Wii Remote controller. The first player to reach a seesaw might make it tilt to help his or her character reach a higher platform – and then tilt it incorrectly just to mess with other players.
  • New items include the propeller suit, which will shoot players high into the sky with just a shake of the Wii Remote and Mario’s new ability to transform into Penguin Mario.
  • At the end of each stage during the simultaneous multiplayer mode, players are ranked based on their score, the coins collected and the number of enemies defeated.

5 out of 5 stars Great to have you back Super Mario World   November 20, 2009
Stephen D. Reeder (Marietta OH)
I love the old school video games of time past, so I was so excited to see that the Wii was going 2-D again with Super Mario. This game was worth the wait. It is extremely difficult, even more when playing with two or more people. But that is what makes it so much fun. I get to play with my wife at the same time and not every other level(trying not to say anyhing even after she pushs me off a cliff by accident :) ). Great graphics and flow with interesting courses and gameplay. Recommend gettting the Wii Grip for the controller to make it easier to handle.

5 out of 5 stars Most Fun You'll Have on Wii!   November 20, 2009

I like to consider myself a pretty avid Nintendo fan yet even so, I was weary when it came to NSMBWii. However, all those fears evaporated once me and a few of my friends got our hands on this game. YOU WILL LOVE IT. Difficult and frustrating as it may be at times, all the fun we have playing this game more than makes up for it. One of the greatest multiplayer gaming experiences I've had yet. Thank you Nintendo.

5 out of 5 stars best wii game yet   November 20, 2009

You've read the reviews, you've seen the commercials. They're all true!

This game is loads of fun, and sure not to disappoint! The graphics are pretty, the controls work like they're intended to, and the game goes out of its way to make sure newbs aren't totally lost or frustrated. Other than being the most fun Mario title to date, this true-to-its-roots 2D scroller has a few features to keep the non-hardcore-gamer from pulling their hair out:

* multi-player capability is guaranteed hilarity. most fun i've had in a LONG time playing a video game, even with people who are very bad at the game. why? if you're about to die, or can't get past a particularly difficult jumping sequence, you can put yourself in a "bubble" and safely float forward to join your more skilled friends. no more crying that you can't make it past that part--as long as there's at least one person alive and not in a bubble, you're ok. if everyone "bubbles" or dies at the same time, you've got to start over. this gets to be quite funny when you all start bubbling and the last guy panics and bubbles, or jumps off a cliff!

* throwing people and jumping off their heads can lead to some very, very fun and competitive gameplay, or if properly done, teamwork doing these same things can make some difficult unlocks or sequences much easier.

* if you die too many times on multiplayer, you can watch a video to show you how to do the level.

* as you earn large coins, you can spend them to watch videos that show you how to find secret goals and powerups. then you don't feel like you cheated when you search the internet for the same info, because you earned it!

* as you play through the game, you don't have to always use the same number of players. that is, if you beat 4 worlds alone and save the game, the next time you turn on the game you can pick up where you left off with 1, 2, 3, or even 4 people! if you've cooperatively beat most of the game with a friend, you can come back and earn all the extra stuff you missed alone later.

this game is a total win. you simply MUST buy it.

5 out of 5 stars finally SUPER Mario!   November 20, 2009
Mr. Swiss (Kansas City, KS)
I bought a wii about two months ago with the sole purpose of playing mario kart and old nes and snes games off the net. I saw that this game was coming and bought several other of the mario titles because I was just really fiending for mario. The other games are very good but this is what I was looking for, really. It has that same super mario feel the older ones had, especially 3 and mario world had with some new stuff and wii controls. I don't own a ds so I can't compare to that version of super mario but I can say this game is pure fun. It's like in mario in that if you're not paying attention and being careful you can die easily and only being able to save your game when you beat a castle is kinda silly I think but nintendo wants you to play this game. Getting extra men is easy, I've played this game twice with a combined playing time of about 4 hours and I have about 45 extra men. I would have more but the first two hours I played were kinda wasted in that it didn't save because I didn't beat the castle otherwise I would have another 20 guys. Those additional 40 or whatever were gained in about two hours. I like this game and it seems like it's getting easier to control the more I play it. I would recommend this game to anyone who enjoyed old school super mario and anybody who is just looking for a good wii game. I still have yet to try it on multi-player mode but I bet it's pretty fun too.

Thank You Nintendo, I imagine all of Japan would turn on you if you messed this up but you didn't. This game has, so far, lived up to all the hype.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic game - had forgot what "gamers thumb" was until now!   November 20, 2009
ichor (PacNW, USA)
Remember playing Mario 1, 3, and Super Mario World...for hours on end, long into the night, and how badly the joints in your thumbs hurt and that raw patch on your thumb-tip? Well...it's finally back! (No, I didn't exclude Mario 2. Nobody would have lost a minute of sleep over THAT thing, except to complain how lame it was.)

The worlds here are colorful and beautiful. The controls are flawless (though Mario jumps a bit higher than I remember.) The hidden areas are just what you'd expect from a Mario game. The multi-player is amazingly-fun (and amazingly frustrating, especially when you find your "teammate" jumping on your end, sending you to your death off a cliff...)

This is the kind of game you want to play nonstop, but force yourself not to because you want to prolong playing it.

All in all, the only thing that could have made this game better would have been about twice as many levels. I haven't beat it yet, but I fear the day that I do...because then I'll probably have to wait YEARS to get another game that serves its purpose so wonderfully: to be FUN.

Would recommend to anyone - new fans of the Mario series, or people who "grew up" with Mario. Great game!
