Product Description Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2 PC
Amazon.com Product Description
Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series. Classic tactical FPS action. View larger. | Customizable multiplayer perk system. View larger. | Diverse in-game environments. View larger. | New weapons and gadgets. View larger. | Story The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs. Gameplay The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them. Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches. Special Ops Co-op Mode Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality. Key Game Features - Challenging Multiplayer Modes – Modern Warfare 2 will contain a wealth of multiplayer modes including: the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy."
- Improved AI Enemies – Improved artificial intelligence now allows enemies to attack from virtually any direction as players respawn into the game adding additional challenges.
- An All-new Call of Duty Adventure - Modern Warfare 2 features an all new Call of Duty storyline revolving around the continuing struggles against the Russian rebel group the Ultranationalists, who have found a new and more dangerous leader.
- The 'Special Ops' Optional Co-op Mode – "Special Ops" Mode allows two players, either alone or with a friend, to engage in unique mission play and features split-screen functionality.
- Diverse In-game Environments - Battlegrounds traversed in the game range from the lonely, snow-clad mountains of Kazakhstan, to dark tunnels in the Afghanistan and the crowded slums of Rio.
- Nonstop Action - Modern Warfare 2 contains no cutscenes, so players are always engaged in the action, no matter where they are in the game.
- New Breach Gameplay Mechanic - Players can now blaze their own paths through the game by "Breaching" formerly impregnable obstacles like walls and doors with explosives.
- New Gadgets, Weapons and Weapons System Modern Warfare 2 contains many new and updated weapons, new weapons attachments, as well as a variant of the multiplayer weapons customization system from Call of Duty 4, now available in the single player campaign.
- New Perks and Increased Customization - Multiplayer modes feature new perks for leveling up, and for killstreaks and deathstreaks. Those awarded for streaks can customized in advance according to when they become available.

Amazing potential yields....overall average game November 25, 2009 Steven Rinck (Lisle, IL USA) Single Player: 2.5/5 Stars
This story picks off a few years after the first Modern Warfare ends. This game is practically overflowing with amazing cinematic setpieces from one moment to the next. The graphics are very good, and on my decent rig the framerate never dipped even in some of the more intense battles with lots of effects. The gunplay is slick and the weapon choices are plentiful and satisfying with meaningful differences between the available weapons and attachments. How then does it only get 2.5 stars out of 5? The pacing and level design are terrible, and the plot becomes confusing, disjointed and ends with more loose ends than any other videogame I've ever played.
I won't spoil the plot particulars, so lets go with pacing and level design. Gone are the infinitely respawning enemies of MW1...and for that reason alone I thought the single player would be amazing. Instead, they've replaced them with badguys that spawn (but in fixed amounts) surrounding you and with superior positioning. To make it worse they are all crack shots (even when blindfiring around a corner), spam grenades and RPGs like parade confetti.
It ruins the pacing and intensity of many of the missions. The chase through the Rio Favela for instance looked like an intense high-paced battle. Play it like that and you'll never see the end of the mission though. Instead of running and gunning through it chasing down the target, you have to crawl through it cautiously as almost every corner you go around will present you with 10-15 new badguys that will hit you with every bullet they fire.
Larger chaotic missions are even worse. You'll be facing dozens of enemies at once. It's supposed to be fair because you'll have other soldiers/squadmates, but you can't control/direct them, and they're virtually useless. I say virtually because they do keep you from getting lost. It's a videogame tradition to have your squadmates unable to hit the broadside of a barn with their weapons, meaning you do all the killing. Infinity Ward keeps up with tradition here. They also take away their other traditional role though: bullet sponge. The enemies pretty much ignore your allies and only go for you. It's an almost beautiful site in some of the bigger battles to see 9-10 RPG smoke trails and dozens of bullet tracers all converging on your position simultaneously while your buddies sit out in the open with all the care of an office-worker on a smoke break.
Multiplayer: 3/5
The loss of dedicated servers hurts this a lot. Its not a deal-breaker that lowers it to one star like many others have rated it, but it is a significant mark against the game. I actually don't mind the loss of custom maps/mods, etc so much. It's problem is this: it removes a simple feature that PC gamers have had for about a decade: to reliably connect to a server, and find a server with decent ping. Often-times you will get a server that has decent ping...but often enough (~1/3 of the time) you'll end up on some stuttering mess that's almost unplayable or completely unplayable (despite the fact that all players have "full bars"; actual ping numbers are not provided). And that's only when you can connect to a game at all. Numerous times I've been completely unable to connect to a game at all.
There are other issues too. A dedicated server allows for the formation of a loose community. A consistent group of people that aren't necessarily on your "friends" list that will play with each other on a server. You also lose the ability to kick & ban players that are disruptive, or those that are obviously cheating (surprisingly rare so far, but it will get worse as time goes on and Infinity Ward becomes less diligent in negating hacks).
That being said, when you are on a good server, the game is fun and addictive. The level of customization is fantastic. Also, at least early on, you can't go 2 rounds without unlocking something new, which drives you to want to play more and more. It makes the lack of dedicated servers all the more disappointing to know that such a great game is there, but the oftentimes you can't experience it because you can only find lousy servers.
There are some weapon balance concerns: notably sub-machine guns seem incredibly weak, while other combinations (like dual shotguns) are a bit too powerful. The majority of players use assault rifles and light mg's (myself included) which seem well-balanced. Some perks are just too useful compared to others (Perk Slot #2, for instance, only has 2 truely viable choices). I have hope that some of this will be remedied by future patches, but we'll see.
Overall, the game is inconsistent. The Single-player campaign has amazing pieces that are strung together with frustrating and un-fun combat. The multiplayer has a phenomenal game that is hampered by being unable to be reliably served. It's a disappointment not only coming from a developer of Infinity Ward's ability, but because there really is a 5-star game burried under a layer of poor decisions and lazy design.
So much potential down the drain November 25, 2009 Erick Perez (Miami, Fl) The multiplayer mode has so much potential... but alas no dedicated servers and an overabundance of hackers make it suck. Joining a game can be downright frustrating, especially if you want to play with friends. Then once you actually join, you have to deal with the lag and blatant hackers who ruin the game by using a nuke within the first 2 minutes. Good job Infinity Ward. You killed a game with so much potential and successful series all in one fell swoop. You may have gotten our money for this crappy console port, but you're going to have a hard time pulling the same stunt in the future. Please don't make the same mistake some of us did - DO NOT BUY THIS GAME
This time user reviews are correct... November 24, 2009 Metacom Its as everyone has said. The PC version is not worthy of your money, your parents money or the guy you robbed money.
Do you remember FEAR 2's multi? of course not because they decided in their grand wisdom the PC community didn't need dedicated servers and look what happened...nothing. FEAR 2's multi is non existent. FEAR 1 had some incredible multi...go figure it did have dedicated servers.
Without dedicated servers the PC multi will die a slow death till MW3 which will probably have them. Try 100+ pings (often 200+) small matches, no choice which map you want to get on, no cheater banning and so on.
What I found most aggravating is the graphic display of pings in the PC version as they are the same in the console versions. Just little bars like a damn cell phone. Why? I wouldn't be surprised if its because peoples actual pings that are full green bars can still be at 150+ ping. Truly, there is a "hack" that removes the ping bars and replaces them with traditional millisecond ping displays and once in a server with a guy who was using the hack told me my ping was averaging around 250!!! and I had 3 "green bars." This is not FPS capable pings and any FPS gamer worth his salt WILL feel the lag and notice how clunky and unresponsive multiplayer game play is.
Congrats Infinity Ward. The largest title release of the year and its nothing more than a crappy console port with a shiny finish.
Save your money for Bad Company 2.
A great game turned bad November 24, 2009 GhoStalker (St. louis, MO) The game overall had the potentional to be outstanding. The lack of dedicated servers has run the game into the ground. As a PC gamer this has been standard for a long time, and this is come to be expected from FPS games.
Also, the lack of hosting/tell who is hosting is a huge let down. The game makes you enable UPNP on your firewall to be able to "host" games, which you may never do.
The graphics and game play itself it outstanding when you can find a stable "server", and if your lucky that server won't leave in the middle of the match too.
I wish I would have saved my money and headaches with this game, but this is the last Infinity Ward game I buy.
What a rip-off November 24, 2009 Jon R (CT, USA) This game isn't horrible by any means. The single player is fun, but short and the graphics are good. If it were $30 i'd have given it 3 or 4 stars. But its $60, $10 more than the standard PC game price. For that price I almost expect a collectors edition or similar. And what do we get for this extra money? NOTHING. We get a poor console port that fails to take advantage of the potential of the PC platform. No dedicated server, and less people allowed on each map.
Just to put into perspective how big a rip off this is: I recently purchased a game that took me 80 hours to complete, had multiplayer, AND a toolset all of which this lacks. It cost me $50.
With MW2 you get the maybe 6 hour long single player, no deditcated server and only 16 players per map and it costs MORE than any other PC game.
I urge everyone to wait until the price drops to buy this. Don't let them increase the cost of gaming. Show them they won't make more money doing so. It's expensive enough buying the PC needed to play modern games.
