Modern Warfare 2 is a first-person tactical shooter and the sixth entry in the popular Call of Duty series. True to its name and following the lead of its predecessor, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it places players in modern combat settings, as opposed to the WWII environments of the earlier Call of Duty games. This modern approach brings with it new weapons, action and options. Coupled with a variety of gameplay modes including single player, multiplayer and the co-op Special Ops Mode, it is destined to be one of the most popular games of 2009 and a worthy addition to the Call of Duty series.

    Story
The storyline of Modern Warfare 2 picks up where the events of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare left off. The ultranationalist Russian leader Zakhaev has been eliminated, but it seems that his lieutenant, Vladimir Makarov, is an even bigger danger. Having made a successful play for power, Intel indicates that he is extending the reach of his influence well beyond the borders of Mother Russia, causing a stir in the international community and prompting the involvement of Task Force 141. Task Force 141 is an elite multinational unit made up of Navy Seals, Delta Force operatives, British SAS and CIA. In the single player campaign you are Sergeant Gary "Roach" Sanderson, with the hero of Call of Duty 4, "Soap" MacTavish, promoted to Captain, making an appearance as an NPC (non-player character) and your commanding officer. The elimination of Makarov and his underlings at any cost is your number one priority, regardless where the fight occurs.

    Gameplay
The latest release in arguably the most successful tactical first-person shooter franchise of all-time, gameplay in Modern Warfare 2 follows the same winning and time-tested structure of earlier games in the series. In the single player campaign players are aided by AI squad members as they take on a series of missions aimed at eliminating Ultranationalist forces. Each mission is built around a particular objective, with players utilizing some level of guidance from NPC characters, including "Soap" MacTavish, and aided in navigation by the game's heads up display (HUD). Along the way players will be able to utilize a wide variety of weaponry and and vehicles, as well as be able to customize weapons with gadgets attached to them.

Also, just as in previous games in the series, Modern Warfare 2 is heavily focused on multiplayer gameplay. The different multiplayer modes, available both in local play and online, contain plenty of customization options and revolve around different strategies ranging from the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy," just to name a few. Multiplayer modes also feature the "Perk" System that players may be familiar with from earlier in the franchise. Through this system players gain additional abilities, weapons and benefits as they gain experience in combat. This can be done by leveling up, but another important way way is through "kill streaks," the number of enemies eliminated in succession. These are available beginning with three kills and include the ability to call for supply drops, predator missile strikes, helicopter gunships and many more. Players have the ability to customize in advance which perks will be available at each number and can even gauge their progress towards each at the touch of a button. With an eye towards not making the game too hard for new players the game also features help to players experiencing "death streaks," multiple consecutive deaths in multiplayer matches.

    Special Ops Co-op Mode
Along with a single player mode and multiple multiplayer modes, Modern Warfare 2 also features an unique third main play option, Special Ops Mode. Available both online and in local play, Special Ops Mode is designed to provide a distinct time-based play option, featuring special scenarios not found in other modes in the game and lots of enemies to take on. This mode can be played either alone or with a friend, again either locally or online, with local co-op play including split-screen functionality.

    Key Game Features

    • Challenging Multiplayer ModesModern Warfare 2 will contain a wealth of multiplayer modes including: the every man for himself action of "Free-for All," the classic team-based fun of "Capture the Flag and the tactical, team-oriented action of "Search and Destroy."
    • Improved AI Enemies – Improved artificial intelligence now allows enemies to attack from virtually any direction as players respawn into the game adding additional challenges.
    • An All-new Call of Duty Adventure - Modern Warfare 2 features an all new Call of Duty storyline revolving around the continuing struggles against the Russian rebel group the Ultranationalists, who have found a new and more dangerous leader.
    • The 'Special Ops' Optional Co-op Mode – "Special Ops" Mode allows two players, either alone or with a friend, to engage in unique mission play and features split-screen functionality.
    • Diverse In-game Environments - Battlegrounds traversed in the game range from the lonely, snow-clad mountains of Kazakhstan, to dark tunnels in the Afghanistan and the crowded slums of Rio.
    • Nonstop Action - Modern Warfare 2 contains no cutscenes, so players are always engaged in the action, no matter where they are in the game.
    • New Breach Gameplay Mechanic - Players can now blaze their own paths through the game by "Breaching" formerly impregnable obstacles like walls and doors with explosives.
    • New Gadgets, Weapons and Weapons System Modern Warfare 2 contains many new and updated weapons, new weapons attachments, as well as a variant of the multiplayer weapons customization system from Call of Duty 4, now available in the single player campaign.
    • New Perks and Increased Customization - Multiplayer modes feature new perks for leveling up, and for killstreaks and deathstreaks. Those awarded for streaks can customized in advance according to when they become available.

    1 out of 5 stars Hey, it's fun. Why'd I give it a 1??   November 21, 2009
    Felix Feng
Oh boy oh boy, Modern Warfare 2. The game we've all been waiting for. The game that will go into the disk tray and stay there for over 2 months. Oh boy. The disk went in; I think i'm hyperventilating now.. I finished the campaign, my fingers are tingling from excitement... I go to multiplayer, get in a good 11 hours of playing time.. and SHABAM. The game freezes.

Oh, it can't be the GAME, can it? The angelic game, given to us from the great entity, Infinity Ward, that lives in the sky? It must be my xbox. I know! I'll test it with Halo 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: World at War, and Rainbow 6 Vegas on multiplayer! But do these expired shooters work? Yep, as well as they have since the day I bought them. Just to be safe, I clear up some of my nearly filled harddrive. I install the game to my harddrive.

So I go back to Modern Warfare 2, and try multiplayer. IT WORKS! The man's head is in my sights, I'm about to get the 300 points... I squeeze the trigger, trembling in anticipation, and what?! How come no one's moving? Why didn't my gun flash? Why didn't I hear the *piiiinnng* as the bullet hit the man's helmet? WHHHAATT?! THE GAME FROZE?! AGAIN?!!! The freaking useless piece of plastic froze in less than 4 minutes??

To make that long story short, the servers that Infinity Ward uses for Modern Warfare 2 will freeze your xbox 360. It doesn't do this to everyone but it did it to me and a few others. If you bought this game for the multiplayer, then just return it. Infinity Ward didn't feel like trouble shooting its servers before pushing out the half finished, xbox freezing, abomination that is Modern Warfare 2.

The game is now useless to me now. Don't risk your 60$ on this piece of garbage. Shoot, I needed to work for nearly 8 hours to get this, and all it can do is play a 5 hour campaign. Not worth your money or your time.

5 out of 5 stars Way cool   November 21, 2009
    Ryan Kutz (Kizivyiea, Mars)
Things about this game that were way cool:

    -The Guns: many.

-The Campaign: maybe a little more far fetched then the first one, but it was still incredible. Using many types of guns, you fight in frigid, camouflaging blizzards, in a burning Washington DC, and in massive, ancient castle.

-Special Ops: Very awesome missions, it's cool to play them by yourself...but it's way cool to do it co-op.

    -Improved AI: um...it's improved.

-Multiplayer: Cool maps, custom classes, and custom kill streak rewards.

-Captain Price: I bet all those people who thought he died in Call of Duty 4 feel pretty silly now, such silly people, they're so silly.

if you do not have this game already you should definitely buy it for it is certainly: way cool.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome, but does leave some things to be missed from COD4: MW   November 21, 2009
    Niki Li (Fort Lauderdale, FL)
So far, I love this game as my friends said I would. I've only minor complaints, which do not stop me from loving this game as much as the previous installment. I'm still trying to get used to the difference in the sound/voices. They seem lower and not as "authentic" as the last game. The Russians and the Terrorists don't sound real. The guns and explosions don't sound as realistic either. Maybe it's just me. They have added soooo many new things that I feel overwhelmed w/ all of the options. I know that will pass as I play it more. I am starting to get used to the new guns and perks. There are lot of weird looking guns in this game and I feel like a noob all over again playing this game b/c so much has changed. Don't really have a problem w/ the maps as I have my favorites over others. I hope they add more soon, especially maps like Shipment! I love small maps like that one. They're great for 1 on 1 with a friend in private matches or large parties for the excitement. I really hope they consider adding an update to bring back some of the voice clips from the last version for the respective teams. My favorite is a marine yelling "Granaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaade!" before he throws it. Of course, any game company/developer will get praise or complaints whenever they make sequels. Nothing is ever perfect for everyone. Rent this game first to decide the level of investment you wish to pay to own it. You can't go wrong either way. :)

5 out of 5 stars The "Most Perfect" FPS to Date!   November 21, 2009
    E. Powell (North America)
Forget what the naysayers are complaining about. If you played the game and then read their complaints, you'd laugh at how trivial they are.

This is probably the "most perfect" FPS shooter since Halo Combat Evolved came out AT THAT MOMENT IN TIME.

They've truly raised the bar. I don't think there's any going back after this.

    3 out of 5 stars a few steps forward...several back   November 21, 2009
    T. Isringhausen
The entire call of duty series is not only legendary, but a ton of fun to play. That being said, they really shot themselves in the leg with this game. The campaign is a blast, but it's so short that the replay value is very limited. Competitve co-op in World at War's campaign was insanely addictive, and the goldeneye style skulls (cheats) made it a blast to play several levels again. Infinity Ward included SpecOps in the new game to replace both competitve co-op and zombies, however the replay value on these 2-3 minute levels is almost nonexistent. In World at War you could have 4 people playing the campaign or zombies together. In this game SpecOps is limited to 2 players. I have 2 buddies I always play with, which means as soon as the third signs on, we're forced to stop playing the only co-op game type available and go to multiplayer. I understand different people made the MW and WaW games, but they still should have borrowed some ideas.

The multiplayer is what most people get the game for, and I love playing with a group of friends. MW2's decision to disable party chat not only means I have to listen to adolescents verbally abuse anyone and everyone, but it makes it very difficult to organize games with a few friends when the network goes screwy and kicks people out of lobbies, which is quite often. They've implemented quite a few new systems like killstreaks allowing you to choose different types of planes and helicopters to attack with, and all the new perks added are a ton of fun. But claymores have been swapped from a perk to a grenade you have to unlock, and you only get one. Good luck finding a SINGLE room in the game with only one entrance. Both martyrdom and last chance have been moved to a deathstreak, which means you don't have to waste one of your three perks on them, but you do have to die something like 3 or 5 consecutive times to activate it, and you can't revive a downed teammate.

A lot of the problems I have with the game are simply things they tried to "improve" and missed badly. With the lack of party chat and co-op it makes it more difficult to do what I want, play with friends. I'm not giving it three stars because I didn't enjoy it, but because a sequel should take the good and improve upon it, not pointlessly disable and not include useful features and gametypes from previous installments.
