Amazon.com Punisher: War Zone cannot be adequately described as "over the top"--it's a relentless catalogue of brutal mayhem punctuated, here and there, with outrageous sentimentality. Frank Castle, a.k.a. The Punisher (Ray Stevenson, Rome) has dedicated his life to killing the kind of gangsters who murdered his family. But when he unknowingly kills an undercover FBI agent, Castle falls into a crisis of conscience and decides to lay down his guns. Unfortunately, one of the last gangsters he thought he'd killed survived, albeit horribly disfigured, and seeks revenge on the wife and daughter of that slain FBI agent--so Castle has to go one last spree of vigilante justice! But this plot summary will not prepare you for the jolting violence of Punisher: War Zone; rarely do more than a few minutes go by without startling physical savagery, particularly to people's heads, which get blown apart with numbing frequency. This violence somehow goes hand in hand with dizzyingly saccharine moments when a young girl gazes at Castle with trusting eyes, knowing in her heart that he's the only one who can protect her. The dialogue goes beyond cliche into tough guy baroque. Stevenson underplays Castle to good effect, because everyone else in the movie--including Dominic West (The Wire), Doug Hutchison (The Green Mile), and Wayne Knight (Seinfeld)--chews the scenery like it's slathered with gravy. Some viewers will find this movie revolting; others will worship it like a golden calf. You probably know where you stand. --Bret Fetzer

good overall but held back by mediocre villain September 30, 2009 Poshu Oshu (Dallas, TX) i have to say this movie did alotta things right. this is definitly my favorite actor to portray the punisher. he certainly has the mannerisms down. there are alotta scenes that show the punisher being who he really is, a brutal killer with an agenda. he is also extremely well trained. as i understand it they had special forces trainers on set to teach proper technique for breaching a hostil room. i loved everything they did for the "good guys" part in this movie. however the villain they worked up is lackluster at best. jigsaw is a low level mob boss who gets his face cut up and decides to go up against the special forces nightmare that is the punisher by using his psycotic brother "loony bin jim". so a mediocre villain and a standard crazy guy are the best they could come up with to throw at punisher?
plus the inclusion of some freerunners for about 10 seconds seems totally unnesicary. yeah they do some cool acrobatics but they are taking out almost as quickly as they show up, little too much build up for a red shirt character.
overall this movie gives me hope. it's an excelent first attempt and it puts punisher on the right path to being the kind of character half of comic book fans love and the other half see as a viscous psycopath. if they keep with this crew and this style, but add a villain who is worthwhile for punisher to fight, a villain worthy of a film. then we'd have a great movie.

Need proof that some of the reveiws here are made by people getting paid to do so? Some people actually gave this movie 5 stars!!! What a joke. This movie is almost if not worst than Catwoman (I'm not kidding). The acting is horrible. Don't they screen the movies before they release them in theaters? I agree that the previous Punisher movie wasn't as good either but It sure as hell A LOT better than this one. Hell, I'll even watch the Dolph Lundren version than this crap.
If you Like the Punisher, I think you'll like this movie September 21, 2009 JahSoulsSun (Lindenwold, NJ) Punisher War Zone is a blood bath. A shootem up with a vengeance plot. No love story to slow you down, there is a constant action feel to almost the entire movie. The guy playing the Punisher is how I picture the Punisher from the comics. Way better casting than the John Travolta version. If you like gunplay, over the top violence, and of coarse... THE PUNISHER, then this movie will do you no wrong! The Blu Ray looks decent, but not the crispest picture I have ever seen. Although, it is a dark movie, and with that being considered, it looks pretty damn good.
Black Action-Comedy August 20, 2009 P. Titus (Colorado) I must say that this movie takes what you would read in a comic book, and then super-imposed it on the silver screen with some of the most brutal, but entertaining violence you've ever seen this side of a guillotine! I thought that the acting was First-class over-the-top especially with some of the acting from the main villains brother! I mean some of the lines I heard were so funny, I thought I would sht my pants!!! LOL "Yummy, yummy for my tummy" Arrrrrrrrhhhhhhrrrr!!!!!!!! I mean FUNNY! If you like to see a goory end to some bad guy's and some one-liners that would put Chevy Chase to shame, look no further than this movie, it's beautifully violent and over the top lunacy that is SO watchable and enjoyable, I would give it ten stars if I could1
Better Action. Worse Acting June 14, 2009 Keith C. Kopel (Pequannock, NJ) When I saw the trailer for Punisher War Zone I was really excited because it reminded me of the action and vengeance that the original Punisher possessed in the comics. From the opening scene, the movie sets the bar high with a crazy amount of action. For people who thought Thomas Jane was a bit of a pansy in the last Punisher movie, you'll love Ray Stevenson as Frank Castle. Ray Stevenson was in the HBO show Rome and he was perfectly cast for this role. Punisher War Zone is a brutal no holds barred movie that has lots of in your face action and violence. On the other hand, the acting in this movie was absolutely terrible, but you're most likely not watching this movie to witness Dominic West's acting chops. Dominic West, from HBO's The Wire, plays the villian Jigsaw. His New York Italian accent made me cringe at times and is worse than Angelina Jolie's Macedonian accent in Alexander. Hearing the Italian accents will remind most people of the Sopranos and that isn't a good thing. Overall, I really did enjoy this movie because of the mindless violence and back to basics that the comic book Punisher is about:vengeance and retribution.
