5 out of 5 stars Got 2 of them...working great!   March 20, 2010
ichor (PacNW, USA)
Purchased two of these to use as a mirrored external backup drive. Performance, while nice, isn't critical to me (since it's all going through a USB2 interface anyway), but the noise level and power consumption is. After my Seagate drive died (they're not even worthy of a link to their product. Point is: don't buy SeaGate as their firmware likely is still riddled with bugs that they'll release an update for...after you've lost all your data.)

At any rate, after formatting these drives and doing a series of tests for integrity, these seem to be up to the standard of all the other Western Digital drives I've purchased in the past. They run on low power, cool, and very quiet - the fan in the external enclosure is far louder than both these drives combined. Copying data to and from the drive was flawless, and, while not as fast as many other drives on the market, if you're looking to save power and/or it's going into an external enclosure anyway (and speed doesn't matter much), then these really drives can't be beat.

Would highly recommend. The only "problem" with Western Digital drives are they last TOO long. As I write this, I have 4 WD drives next to my desk: 3gig (from August 1997), 8gig (March 1999), 13gig (March 2000), and 80gig (June 2004). Yes, WD stamps the date on their drives...and they all work as flawlessly as the day they were purchased. It's just difficult to justify using 5volts to gain so little space.

5 out of 5 stars Packaging is fine   March 19, 2010
Travis J. Cole (San Francisco)
A lot of reviews here are complaining about DOA units due to poor packaging. I just got this drive yesterday and the packaging was perfectly adequate. It came in a standard OEM hard drive shipping package. It's sparse packaging but it was certainly enough to keep the drive safe.

I don't know if Amazon improved their packaging, or people think they should pack the box with padding, but the drive I got yesterday was just fine. My Drobo is syncing it as I type this.

5 out of 5 stars The packaging is perfect!   March 16, 2010
Matthew K. Tucker (Charlotte, NC)
I didn't purchase this drive for a number of weeks largely because of all the negative packaging & DOA feedback. I can say that I am perfectly happy with my purchase in the end and everything was perfect.

A LOT of reviewers have bashed this product based upon improper packaging. I can assure you that I just received mine today (3/16/2010) and it was packaged with the exact same "wings" the a retail drive comes in. It was also in a box that fit perfectly and had virtually no excess movement. My guess would be Amazon has seen the many complaints about improper packaging of OEM hard drives and have taken steps to correct this. This is just a guess, but I believe fairly sound as mine arrived in perfect shape.

This drive isn't the speediest but it is fairly priced and has a large amount of capacity. I am currently using a few of these in a Virtual Machine NAS box inside VMWare ESXi4. They provide low power consumption, and decent enough performance for a home server streaming media to a few systems (Windows, Mac, iPhone, & a couple PS3's.) The heat isn't too bad but I would recommend picking up a cooler or backplane (especially if using multiple drives) for added longevity.

5 out of 5 stars WD 1 TB Cavier Green   March 14, 2010
Patrick Mundy
I've had the WD 1 TB Caviar Green for several months now. It was easy to set up on my new computer build and has worked flawlessly. It may not be as fast as a Caviar Black but it is more than adequate for storage and serving up videos and music. It is also more energy efficient but at a slight performance hit. I have more than average computer experience, this being my 4th computer build over the years plus working with computers on my day job. Previously, I had purchased another one of these drives for my son and he likes it.

1 out of 5 stars RMA'd it Within 30 Days   March 10, 2010
Amazonian 2082 (Dreary Ohio)

I ordered this drive mid January 2010 and by mid February 2010 I RMA'd it. Windows Vista would not boot and when I ran Check Disk there were all kinds of errors. It did work for a few weeks, but the whole computer ran slow. I used a program from Western Digital's website to make an identical copy of my old hard drive, so I think that had something to do with it, but it could have been the packaging. The packaging was simply bubble wrap on the hard drive as opposed to the replacement that Western Digital sent me was in molded plastic designed to fit the hard drive.

What I learned from the whole experience: if your drive goes bad, send it back to Amazon if possible because Western Digital made me pay for shipping!!

So I guess I'm rating the RMA process from Western Digital and it gets 1 star because I had to pay to ship a broken product back to them.

I ended up buying a 750GB Caviar Green in the meantime and it works fine. Did a fresh install of 7 instead of Vista. 7 is noticeably faster.
