one of my fav ds games EVER! November 12, 2009 I played the original pokemon ranger and was very happy when pokemon ranger shadows of almia came out. I love the pokemon ranger games and prefer it compared to the other pokemon games. In the game pokenom ranger shadows of almia you play a pokemon ranger, some one who protects all pokemon from harm. The game uses a capture stylus that is used to capture pokemon and gives a very interactive feeling, unlike in other pokemon games where u just watch pokemon battle. The capture stylus is used by making circles around the pokemon with your ds stylus until the pokemon is captured. Different levels of pokemon require a certian amount of circles drawn, the harder the pokemon the more number of circles. In the begining of the pokemon ranger shadows of almia game you go to "ranger school" which is very fun even if you already played the the first game and knew all the controlls. Once you finish "ranger school" you start the game. In the game you have one "partner pokemon", a pokemon that will stay with you and can help you capture pokemon by using there special powers. Along with partner pokemon you also have "friend pokemon" which are pokemon that you have captured, but friend pokemon cant stay with you forever you have to give them up once you leave an area. There are no "levels" inthe game, but there are missions. Some missions took more time than others but over all they where very easy and i was able to beat the game in less than a day. Even though the game was short it didnt mean it was not super fun! Once your finish all the missions and get to rank 10 (the highest rank the you can recive in the game, you get it by completeing all the missions) u can:
A.download new missions through wifi
B.contuine and complete all the quests (small tasked asked to do by the townspeople)
C.test your ability in the ranger battle area where you have to try to capture tough pokemon (only avaiable after completeing all missions)
D.complete your pokedex
F.start over and replay the game (yes it is so fun it makes you want to play it again)
so even once you complete all the missions you never run out of things to do. This game is probably one of the best games for ds and I will continue to play it over and over and it will continue be as much fun as the first time I played it.
Fun but tricky September 20, 2009 Bethany M. Hall Hubby bought me this game with my ds so it was one of the only games I had to play. I have since beaten most of the game and find it interesting but really tricky.
You have to be super careful with your stylus to make sure your circles work properly. And it's frustrating not to know what pokemon have useful abilities and which don't. And I refuse to spend [...]or more on a massive book to go with the game.
I did find that gamefaqs had the walk through which helped immensely.
The people talk way to much and once they've said something good luck getting them to tell you a second time!
If you like the original pokemon and want to explore another realm of it then go for it. If you prefer the old game I don't think you'll like these as much!
Best game in the world July 10, 2009 This game is amazingly sweet.I love it when I get new partner pokemon. But I get stuck capturing Toxicroak and Rampardoes, but its more challenging when you capture the legondery pokemon at the end of the game. But still its the best game ever!
Surprisingly addictive June 29, 2009 Adrienne B. (United States) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
*Just a side comment, I havent ever played the first Pokemon Ranger game, so this review is going to be strictly about my feelings of Shadows of Almia*
Pokemon Ranger: Shadows of Almia was one of the first games I bought for my DS. I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by it.
First off I'd like to say that I originally got into Pokemon when it first came out about 10 years ago. The show was awesome and the Pokemon Red and Blue versions were so innovative and fun to play. So it is pleasantly surprising for me to tell you how much I enjoy the spin off this game takes from the "regular" pokemon games such as red, blue, gold, silver, sapphire, etc. Instead of becoming a pokemon trainer who's ultimate goal is to collect every pokemon in the known universe as well as becoming a Pokemon Master, the player is allowed to choose between a boy or girl character who instead chooses to become a Pokemon Ranger.
Pokemon Rangers are different from Pokemon Trainers in the fact that instead of capturing pokemon with a pokeball to use to advance your team and work with to make stronger, a Ranger captures pokemon with a poke disc, befriends them, uses their abilities to help them take care of certain situations, then releases them to go back to wherever it was they came from. However Rangers still have a special "partner pokemon" that travels around with them constantly. There are many partner pokemon a ranger can use throughout the game, but a ranger can only keep one partner pokemon with them at a time. The basis of the Shadows of Almia is to become the best Pokemon Ranger you can manage by completing missions and quests given to you by random characters throughout the game.
The game is a lot of fun and very addicting. However the only negative things I can think of about this game are that it does end up becoming very repetative after a while. Especially if for some reason you make a mistake somewhere and have to back track to capture a pokemon you need with a specific poke assist so that you can advance to the next area. And the constant circling with the stylus to capture pokemon can make your wrist hurt after a while, so if you notice your arm getting tired make sure to take a break. Also I feel the game is relatively short and pretty easy to get through.(Which I guess could be a positive or negative feeling depending on how much you enjoy the game.) It only ended up taking me around 36 hours to beat as opposed to 100+ hours on the other pokemon games.
Regardless, when I picked up this game it was hard for me to put down. I just had to continue and get as far as I could in one sitting before finally tearing myself away long enough to get some sleep. Overall I feel this is a great game for anyone who enjoys a little bit of Pokemon in their lives.
Very Fun June 21, 2009 T. Lin (Texas) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
Compared to basically most of all the other pokemon games, this is definitely something out of the routine. And I really like that.
With the missions and quests that you get, it's just sort of something new every time~ and it's great being able to see the pokemon before you have to battle it, that way you can avoid them (the slower ones anyway) and not have to spend time fighting or running away when you don't want to do that in the first place.
I just really enjoy this game, but I warn! If you don't have something protecting your touch screen, you really should get it, because doing all the "capturing" will seriously wear out your screen faster.
I've been playing the game for a few days now, and my protection seal already has a lot of circular scratches on it hahah. That is the only downside of this I see.
