5 out of 5 stars Why did I wait so long?   October 24, 2009

Why, oh, why did I wait so long to start using Quicken? After using MS Money for years, I was forced to find another financial program after Microsoft threw in the towel. I find Quicken to be a much more intuitive and easy to use program. Set up was an absolute breeze. I recommend it highly.

The print is so small, it is impossible to read.

Trouble with the check numbers. If you activate the alarm system, then
the next time you try to print a check, the program closes.

1 out of 5 stars Not MS Money   October 5, 2009
S. Wallace (Lexington, KY USA)
I was a Quicken user way back in the early days, but have been a MS Money user for the past 10 years (at least through the '99 version). Due to MS dumping the product and my auto downloads failing to work, I've been forced on to another product (yes, you can still use MS Money, no, I don't plan to manually download). Been using Quicken H&B for 2 months now.

After reading about several competing products including some open source projects, I decided to give Quicken a try. After all, they make an ok tax program and one would think they could at least mimic some MS functionality (or other way around). I saw a lot of negative reviews, but it's hard to tell when the user is the problem and when it's the software.

Short of it is that I wouldn't recommend this product to anyone. While it does more or less work, I've found a lot of things that I just don't like.

1. Stability. I can expect a crash at what appears to be about 20% of the time (each time being unique sessions). Crash sometimes just opening. Crash most usually clicking on a tab to change screens (view a report, see summary, etc). I'm always fearful I'm going to lose my last 15 minutes of work.
2. If you've used MS Money, prepare to be very disappointed in how everything overall works. I kind of like the accounts list on the side (better navigation for that than Money), but everything else is at least 7 years behind Money.
3. Overall navigation is insane. It just feels like 20 people worked on each section independently and then tried to fit it all together with buttons scattered all over every screen. Finding my way around to simple things is such a pain that I've found I don't watch things as closely now as I used to with Money.
4. Other nitpicks I won't bother with on how accounts work, the failure of reconciling downloaded transactions to manually entered ones...

On the plus side, I purchased the download from Amazon and as usual it worked great. Installation was a breeze, updated to the R6 version (latest as of this writing) and even tried the MS Money data transfer utility. Side note - just prepare to lose about everything you have - the transfer program is not much more than a joke. I spent enough time trying to fix what it did import that I finally gave up and deleted all my transactions prior to 2 years ago.

So... Given the stability of the product alone, I would not personally purchase this product again, although I will give the 2010 version a try when it comes out and hope for the best. It takes a lot of effort to set up a financial package, so I was reluctant to do trials of competitive products, but if 2010 can't live up to the last version of Money, off I'll go...

5 out of 5 stars Quicken 2009   October 3, 2009

I used a prior version years ago and like the ease of reconciling my checkbook. I don't do well with the traditional pencil and calculator making this a great time management item. I am also able to track my Flexible Spending Account and business related expenses associated with starting a new business. If you have a complex business, you may need more to manage the business aspect of your finances.

1 out of 5 stars Any Alternatives to Buggy Quicken with No Technical Support?   September 27, 2009
SanjeevP (Michigan, USA)
1 out of 1 found this review helpful

Intuit is a despicable company now. This is the same that company came out with really functional and reasonably priced products in early 1990's like Quicken, Quickbooks & Turbotax.

But somewhere in late 1990's this company was taken over by the same crooks who run the Wall Street. Instead of attracting users to upgrade to their product's new versions by improving them, like Apple does, the nitwits at Intuit blackmail you to upgrade to newer versions of Intuit products by taking away the functionality of earlier versions. For example they are blackmailing users into upgrading to Quicken 2009 by dropping support for online banking in earlier versions; and to Quickbooks 2009 by dropping support for payroll in earlier versions.

Now Intuit's motto is to gouge the customers as much as they can by hook or crook (mostly) by extorting them to upgrade to a poorly functional and buggy newer version.

1. They are forcing Quicken users to upgrade to 2009 version by blackmailing them: dropping support for online banking in earlier versions.

2. The newer version, Quicken 2009, is poorly functioning & buggy (as detailed by other reviewers too), not a better product. The program shuts down every time I try to accept an individual downloaded transaction. The only way to stop that is to click on "Accept all"

2. Periodically the programs refuses to read the file and I have to restore the backup file. I used to backup once a month with earlier versions and now I do it every time I exit the program.

4. Online support to download transactions is also limited: for example I cannot download transactions for my credit card from Charles Schwab Bank.

5. After the upgrade they provide very limited technical support. For all practical purposes there is no technical support. They do not even provide a tech support phone number to call. You can contact them from the web site when they provide you with a useless ticket number. Instead they direct to Quicken User Communities. After taking your money, they want other users of Quickbooks to provide you with technical support!

6. So Intuit got your money, you got a buggy software with poor functionality, and no technical support. You cannot even do now what you were able to do in an earlier version. You paid money to go from a functioning product to a buggy software.

What a trade off! Basically Intuit screwed you.

Purchasing Quicken is, of course, just the beginning of the upgrade ordeal. Real nightmare starts when you start getting all those error messages. After you install Quicken 2009, you will find that it has become cluttered with useless features that you do not even need. At the end you are left with the feeling: Intuit has screwed me.

Every time you deal with Intuit, you will be left with a bad taste and hate for this company. Not only they blackmail you into upgrading, every time you have to pay the full price of newer version, there is no upgrade price. And you can get Quicken cheaper at Amazon than buying from Intuit directly.

I hate dealing with Intuit and dumped their Turbotax for Taxact in 2004 and was planning to dump Quicken for Mint. And now they have purchased Mint! What are the alternatives to Quicken? Please leave your response in the comments section and help us dump Quicken.
