This game bites October 22, 2009 Joseph Striefsky (Jerz) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
Yes, that was a vampire pun. Moving on...
I bought this game for $[...] at a Gamestop sale awhile back and finally got around to playing it recently what makes it worse is that I brought this game with me on a trip as my only source of entertainment; GOOD GRIEF!
The difficulty wasn't what really bothered me but the game IS extremely hard. I like a good challenge in my games but when the challenge comes from broken mechanics and utter BS it doesn't translate to an enjoyable game.
I tend to prefer the Metroidvania type games more than these. Playing through stages in this type of game just doesn't tickle my fancy quite like the castle exploration aspect of SotN.
I'd say the only actual reason for owning this game is to play SotN. I know this wasn't a great review but it's hard to explain exactly why it's so bad. It's just clunky, boring and difficult. It's frustrating; not fun.
Almost perfect. September 14, 2009 Joshua B. Bacher (Eugene, OR United States) If you are looking for a special, one of a kind platformer, this game is a compilation of what Castlevania fans have been waiting for, and without the hefty price tag to actually own all of the games included!
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Akumajo Dracula X: Chi No Rondo, and a spectacular remake of Chi No Rondo all make this game a worthwhile purchase. Most folks in the US have been waiting for Chi No Rondo since the mid-90's when it was released for the Turbo Duo. Importing this to the US was a costly and timely manner, usually cumulatively costing $400 for both the game and Turbo Duo console, and the "system card". For many, though, the gameplay, soundtrack, and replay value were worth it.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night is arguably the best platformer ever released for the Sony Playstation, and has been hard to find at times. The music, graphics, challenge, and replay value all make it a must-own.
This compilation is truly one of the best values you will ever find for a video game. The only reason it does not get 5 stars from me is that it does not include the Japanese Sega Saturn version of "Castlevania: Nocturne in the Moonlight", which is essentially Symphony of the Night, but with 2 bonus levels, character helpers, and music.
A worthy albeit hard addition to any PSP collection September 7, 2009 I. Sleeckx (Belgium) Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is a remake for PSP of Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (originally released for PCE (thank you for mentioning this, M. Sanges)). It's not just a lame port, however, the game's been beautifully remastered. The graphics look just great, and apart from the overall difficulty of this title, it doesn't feel like you're playing an old (school) game with some polish over it.
This time around, another member of the Belmont clan, Richter, is out to put an end to the once again revived vampire overlord Count Dracula. One of Dracula's minions has abducted Richter's girlfriend, and so Richter got his whip Vampire Killer from the attic to get her back.
Like most Castlevania games, you play the game from a 2D platformer perspective, running sideways, climbing up ladders and jumping off or onto platforms. With your whip or a couple of secondary weapons like Holy Water, you take out all foes. There is a second playable character in the game, Maria, Richter's girlfriend's sister, but you have to free her from a more or less hidden dungeon first. She doesn't use the Belmont whip, instead she controls animals that fight for her.
Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is hard, which sometimes makes it frustrating to play. First of all you don't have to get hit that often to run out of health points. In addition there aren't a lot of options to replenish your health points. And those that are, are usually hidden behind for example walls that you have to break with your whip first. And finally, there aren't a lot of check points in the levels, so if you die you have to start the level all over again. This often leads to frustration. On the other hand, if you beat a level, you get a great feeling of achievement.
Also the game is rather short. If you're not interested in all the extras/unlockables, you'll breeze through the main quest/game quite fast. But you would be crazy not to seek out at least some of the unlockables. First of all there are 2 entire games unlockable: the original version of Rondo of Blood AND Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, a series classic, and fan favourite. You don't get these extra games for free however. Symphony of the Night is really well hidden in the main game, so you won't get is without some serious effort. Apart from the game there are also some soundtracks unlockable. You get them by finding soundtrack icons in the game. Like everything else unlockable, they are also hidden in the levels. And finally every beaten level is instantly replayable. All the levels are well worth replaying, because there are alternate routes (with alternate bosses!) you can take. Also taking the alternate routes leads you to alternate levels. So there is a lot to explore in this game if you put some effort into it.
The music in Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles is fine. It doesn't get old soon, and never annoys. It's not remarkably good either.
All in all, I think any PSP owner that isn't scared off by the fact that the game is quite hard, should give this game a go. Also with 2.5 games in the box, the package is impressive in my opinion.

This game was absolutely terrible on so many levels. Really boring. You run around in a one dimensional world swinging god knows what. TERRIBLE!!!!!
Wonderful Remake March 15, 2009 Vocaloid (Microphone) This is a pretty neat remake of the original game. The 3D game fits nicely, and you even have the option of playing the original game for the Turbo Grafix 16 along with some bonus stages and hidden "minibosses" in the remake addition. You also get to play SOTN with this game, once unlocked, music, and boss-fighting options.
As for the complaints:
This game is based on the remake of an older game, and like so, will play as the older game. Be prepared to be killed alot by annoying medusa heads or that annoying, very annoying, flea-man in SOTN. Its considered a little "short" by today's standards, as far as game-play length goes. And although they remade the original SOTN for the Turbo Grafix 16, why didn't they include the sega-saturn version of SOTN instead of the playstation? Maria all but disappears in this version as a playable character, which is kind of disappointing.
Overall if you never played these two games, or would want to play them again, now is the time to buy it at its good price. Do not pay more than $[...] bucks for this.
