| Customer Reviews: Good Battery, but not for the 7D November 14, 2009 Deepak Kumararaj (Long Beach, CA) I got 2 of these to use with a new Canon &D, but this battery does not communicate it's charge level to the camera and the camera shows the battery level as empty. It still worked and lasted for an entire day of shooting(including the camera flash), but there is no way of knowing what the charge level in the battery is. If you could work with this limitation, then this battery is definitely good as it's capacity is 2200mAh versus the Canon's 1800mAh.
I ended up returning it as that empty battery indicator on the screen kept driving me crazy.
It works but the battery capacity does not show and has to use its own charger November 13, 2009 L. Lee (IL, USA) Before I made the purchase I called 47th Street Photo to make sure the Opteka LP-E6 battery free from issues like non-displaying battery capacity and incompatibility with the Canon charger. The sales guy promised "100% compatibility" and said "you're NOT going to experience these problems". When the package arrived, I found on the back that they do NOT communicate with the Canon 5D II body and CANNOT be charged with the Canon charger. Sales craps aside, the two batteries did work except they could only be charged with the charger coming with the package. The whole thing is made in China, despite its Japaneses-sounding name. The material and workmanship seem fine. The battery carries a 2-year warranty.
Upon switching on the 5D II, you'll encounter a message: "Cannot communicate with battery. Use this battery?" If you choose "OK", the cammera will operate with the sign of "battery empty" on the top screen all the time. I haven't got the chance to run them down yet but apparently they are OK. Compared to stories of other third party batteries overheating or exploding on the Canon charger, this one at least is safe: just won't charge.
As I was searching around, a Cameta Camera sales person informed me that "currently none of the third party LP-E6 batteries can communicate with the Canon 5D II body or be charged on the Canon charger." If that is true, it'll be up to your tolerance of the "battery empty" symbol.
Works, but needs its own charger and does not display on 5D Mk II November 13, 2009 BL Photography (New York, NY USA) I bought this battery for use on my 5D Mk II. It works great in the sense that it has plenty of juice and does its primary job well, which is to power the camera. I tested it alone on my new 5D Mk II and it lasted one day longer than the factory battery, so the extra juice (2200 mAh) definitely makes a difference. I then tested it in my battery grip with the factory battery, and it lasted so long that I lost track of how many days I can use them for now. I have plenty of Opteka accessories for Canon DSLRs and they all work great; this battery is no exception. And at less than half the cost of the Canon battery, that's a great deal.
However, this battery cannot be "read" by the 5D Mk II. The 5D Mk II's newest feature is to display the battery status in the LCD (along with the existing feature of showing the battery's remaining capacity on the top display). When you first put in the battery, the 5D Mk II says "Cannot communicate with battery Use this battery?". Choose OK to use it, or Cancel to abort. You won't get any other info on this battery in the camera, not even the remaining capacity in the top display. This can be a major issue for some people because if you're not aware of how much juice you have left, you could be left with no power. At $25 per battery, compared to $60 for the Canon one, I can live with this as it is only my backup battery, but you would have to decide for yourself if it's worth it. FYI, I have 2 of the Canon batteries and 3 of these -- I need a lot of juice because I shoot a lot of long indoor events.
Another downside about this battery is that it needs to be charged in its own supplied charger. I think it's because it's a 7.4 volt battery vs. 7.2 volts in the original. So if you're travelling and want to use both the Canon and this Opteka battery, you have to bring both chargers. But that's a minor issue, and the savings is worth it.
Overall, the savings might be worth it to some people to get this battery as either a primary or a backup. To others who depend on their camera for a living and cannot afford to be without power, this could be a serious risk. If this battery could be read by the 5D Mk II, I would have given it 5 stars. Since it cannot, I gave it 3 stars.
Pros:
- holds more juice than the Canon battery
- less than half the price of the Canon battery
Cons:
- remaining capacity not displayed
- cannot be read by 5D Mk II
- needs its own charger because of different voltage
