Terrible, terrible product and customer service. Beware of "extra charges." November 20, 2009 Christopher Winn (Washington, D.C.) I've been a customer of Ooma for 6 months. The old hardware was clunky but it did the job. I ordered all the new Telo hardware, spent $300, and tried to set it up. After following all of the printed instructions, nothing worked. So I call in. Someone named Hannah explains that none of the printed instructions of applicable to "upgraders," and that I instead have to plug this stuff into my computer directly and go through a series of arcane steps.
She fumbles through these steps and seems barely able to speak. She keeps saying, "Wait, hold on, umm."
I am patient. I continue listening. She then explains that as an upgrading customer, I have to not only pay a $12 "surchange" but also a $75 "re-activation fee." I explain, I will not be paying those fees, because nowhere during my purchase did it say, "Stop -- this product does not cost $300. It actually costs $387 - but we'll suck the difference out later."
She persisted, and so I asked for a manager. After 10 minutes of waiting, she said there were no managers, but she'd be happy to "open a ticket" for me. I said no, I want to speak with a manager. She said, "If you had read the terms and conditions, you would have known about the extra fees." I ignore her and continue asking for a manager.
I called Ooma on a second line -- this time asking for Sales. The sales manager kept me on hold for 30 minutes and said they couldn't do anything for me.
In the end, I am returning everything and canceling my account with Ooma. I am also NOT giving my old equipment to a family member, costing Ooma one more potential customer.
TERRIBLE customer service and hidden fees. Don't listen to "no monthly fees," either. Most of the real Ooma features are only available if you pay $12/mo.
Avoid at all costs.
Outstanding November 20, 2009 Morning Mike (Southern California, USA) Setup took a few minutes. The device is exceptional and phone service is outstanding. A++
Poor call quality, interesting concept November 15, 2009 John (Blackwood, NJ United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I would have loved for this to work for me, but the reality is that the call quality was terrible. Sometimes, it would be fine. Other times, it would drop large portions of the call. It was too unpredictable, so I returned it for a refund and canceled the service. I know my ISP is not to blame because I switched to Vonage (also voice over IP) and have not had a problem since. My internet service is cable where I seem to get about 9Mbps download and 5Mbps upload. That should be plenty for phone service. I even did quite a lot of tinkering with the Ooma quality of service features to no avail. Even at ultra conservative QoS settings (under 1Mbps download and upload), I had the exact same problems. My setup was Modem->Telo->Router(DMZ), so the Telo should have been able to properly prioritize my traffic to prefer calls. When I called to cancel, the Ooma representative offered to help me troubleshoot, but I had enough at that point. I did enough trial-and-error to determine it simply wasn't going to work for me. Thumbs down.
Great alternative to traditional phone service November 12, 2009 D. Nelson My only hangups were not waiting long enough for the initial software to be downloaded to the device. After all lights turn blue you are good to go. Voice quality is not as good as Comcast's digital voice, but it also isn't $50 a month so I will keep it and break even after about 6 months and then the savings will pile up. My understanding is they have a plan of lifetime premier service for a one time fee of $350 that I didn't initially hear about. I should be able to apply my yearly $120 to that should I change plans. I may consider that after I have spend more time with my new service. I am using Comcast as my service provider for internet.
I LOVE OOMA TELO! November 12, 2009 Koala (Seattle, WA USA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I should start by saying that I'm a phone geek and I've tried many many different types of cell phones, VOIP, and landline.
For VOIP I've used Vonage, Packet8, Skype, Iaxtel, Lingo, and more. I found that most of them were either difficult to set up or maintain. The exception was Vonage, which was easy to set up, but expensive and was incompatible with my old apartment complex's buzzer. So for the past year I went back to a normal landline, without any features or long distance ($23/month, but good quality and complete compatability.)
I've been using Skype for long distance during this year, and it was okay because it was cheap, but the quality wasn't great.
Ooma solved all this!
Within 10 minutes of opening the box I had the product activated and plugged in. After about 10 more minutes it had finished doing the updates and was ready to use. I placed and received test calls and the call quality sounded great to me and to the people on the other end of the line! And these test calls were done while downloading torrent files at my maximum download speed. Everything works as advertised: Caller ID, voicemail, long distance, etc. I also really like that Ooma gives a dialtone (many VOIP decides do not.)
In addition, the unit looks SEXY! Most of the time when I have VOIP equipment it is bulky and you can tell that a geek owns it. This is so stylish that I don't think anyone would mind having it in their home. At only $0 the first year and $11.75 the every additional year, the price can't be beat.
Additional Info: I have cable internet, and Ooma Telo is installed after my router. My router is running DD-WRT which has QoS built into it. If none of this means anything to you--that's okay! Ooma will work without advanced networking info.
