Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos. | ecoRoute With this feature, drivers can view suggestions for fuel-efficient navigation, conserving both money and fuel: - Save Gas and Money
Now more than ever, we're all looking for ways to conserve both money and fuel. Whether we're taking fewer trips or carpooling with family and friends, saving resources is a top priority. It was that thinking that led to the creation of ecoRoute--our free software update for compatible nüvi products that allows users to find more fuel efficient routes when navigating and even track their fuel usage. With ecoRoute, you may be able to save gas and money by adopting smarter driving habits and finding more fuel-efficient routes.
- Select Fuel-efficient Routes
With ecoRoute, users will have a "less fuel" option as a routing preference. When selected, nüvi will determine if more fuel efficient routes exist based upon road speed data and vehicle acceleration data for a given route.
- Get Fuel and Mileage Reports
Through ecoRoute's Fuel Report and Mileage Report, drivers can focus on their habits even when they're not behind the wheel. Fuel Report tracks fuel usage over time, and Mileage Report monitors mileage and fuel usage on a per-trip basis. In addition, Mileage Report makes it easy for business travelers to keep track of distance traveled for company reimbursements. You'll have a detailed report for each trip and the miles driven. You can also customize your nüvi by entering your car's fuel economy and the current price of gas. Search for locations on Google Maps or Mapquest, then transfer the addresses directly to your Garmin GPS navigator. | Navigate by Photo with Garmin Connect Photos Using Garmin's Connect Photos Web site, you can choose from millions of geo-located photos provided by Google's Panoramio photo sharing community and download them to the nüvi for a richer navigation experience using pictures as a guide. - Choose from Panoramio's collection of photos from around the world.

Needs Improvement. November 25, 2009 Scott Peterson
I've had the 1690 for about 2 weeks now. That includes 2 trips from Los Angeles to San Diego and lots of running around So. Calif.
I'm fairly happy with the navigation features of this unit but there are exceptions. It boots up quickly and finds the satellites much faster than my old 285. To me, the speaker sounds much more hollow than the old unit.
The first thing I noticed when I turned it on was that to make room for all the fancy nulink features most of the navigational options are on the second screen. It bugs me every time I have to page down to get to Favorites. It's a sign that this wasn't well thought out. There are lots of oddities in the UI. Use Garmin Lock, for example, and you'll notice that the numbers are displayed on the unlock screen for a few seconds before being covered with asterisks. I have large fingers and was not happy to see that the keys on the screen are much smaller than the older units.
Nulink is kind of fun. I've used it a few times to search for addresses and locations and it's come through. Garmin's use of it is strange. Checking for updates for the GPS told me about a firmware upgrade and a Thai alphabet addition, but not that there was a 2-gig map upgrade that had to be downloaded by January or you'd be charged for it.
On my old Garmin 285 you could get to a map showing your complete route in a couple of touches. Now you have to bring up the route map and then hit the minus key 8-12 times to shrink it enough to show this.
Navigation seems to be improved from my old unit, but I was unhappy to see that many of the errors that had accumulated on my 285 were still present in the maps on the 1690, even with the latest updates installed.
Traffic is the place where this unit falls down badly. My experiences mirror those of many others. I drove down to San Diego last Sunday and at 10:00 in the morning, it wanted to route me on surface streets through Mission Viejo to San Juan Capistrano because it thought the freeway was closed....it wasn't. Coming back at 7:00 that evening it still wanted to reroute me for the same reason.
I've yet to see this unit find a traffic delay longer than 4 minutes, even when I'm sitting in traffic moving about 5 mph for several miles, not to mention that when you're stopped, the ads start appearing...even when I had the unit in hand and was looking at programming an alternate route. My 285 with MSN traffic, OTOH was accurately reporting 40 minute delays and recommending alternative routes.
In a lot of other cases, the information being reported seems to be way out of date. Given the alleged advantages of Nulink in providing this, it's ridiculous.
It's also much more cumbersome to view a traffic map showing the general area. You end up having to keep pushing the - button.
I'll probably hang on to this unit for now, but until they get the traffic problems fixed, I'd get a different model that's had the bugs worked out.
Disappointing...shows popup advertisements all the time November 22, 2009 Lee Atchison (Seattle, WA USA) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been a big garmin user, but I am disappointed with one particular aspect of this new device. It insists on showing popup advertisements all over the screen. When I checked with Garmin about disabling them, they say you can disable them, but *ONLY* if you disable traffic. If you want traffic, you have to have the ads...
There was no mention of this anywhere on the pre-sale marketing literature or on Amazon.com.
Great! however Bluetooth has issues with the iPhone November 20, 2009 Daniel Ruiz (Rahway, NJ United States) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I want to start by saying that this device is amazing, near perfect. Re: the bad reviews with the advertisements, they will never come on the screen while you driving and will NOT distract you. Please read this awesome review on [...]
My only complaint is it is the iPhone is not fully compatible with the Bluetooth(Garmin support confirmed this). The issue is when receiving calls, it displays all calls as "Unknown Caller", every now and then it will work. I tested it on both my wife's iPhone and mine. Yes you can look at the iPhone and see who the caller is, but it defeats the purpose. Outbound calls and synching with your iPhone contacts works great and had no issues at all. Garmin mentioned a new update is in the works but cannot provide an ETA. I also set up the device with a new BlackBerry Tour 9630 and had no issues. A bummer since my iPhone is connected to my car. I decided to keep the device as I love all the new GPS features it has. Make sure to read the review on the link I placed above... It will give you all the info you need. Hope this helps!
POP-UP ADVERTISING No Choice! November 19, 2009 Jonathon (California) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Avoid this for that exact reason...
This Garmin 1690 comes with POP-UP advertising that you cannot disable either on the unit itself or via a online connection (however, you can disable the traffic service that you paid the premium for on this unit and that will stop the POP-UPS). I simply can't believe that a $500.00 unit that one would pay for would incorporate forced on-screen advertising whether you liked it or not.
The ads end up partially BLOCKING the screen for several minutes or I am reading stay until you reach a certain speed. You have no choice but to see them, read them and wait for them to drop-off. I'd have to assume that those ads consume both memory and battery.
Typicals include a car charger, USB cable and mounts. It takes a mini-USB plug for a in-home charger and better than Garmin's own home charger and at half the price is a Rocket Fish unit selling for approx; $15.00; available at Best Buy.
I'm not going to review the unit here in detail because it was returned for forcing my purchase to include POP-UP ADS.
Poor quality & and horrible accuracy November 8, 2009 Ray J (New Orleans) 10 out of 11 found this review helpful
I've had this unit for a week. While driving the NE corridor approaching NYC, I noticed some inaccurate info: the screen will say to stay in the right lane to continue on I-95N, while the voice prompts will say to stay in the left lane. This is horribly confusing when you do not know the area (I did not) and are relying on the GPS unit for directions. This happened multiple times - I had to eventually just turn the unit off.
It also was interesting that it described our nations capital as "District of Company."
When returning home on the train, the screen went blank after about 20 minutes on battery power. I am praying that it is just a faulty battery. However, another reviewer described the battery as only lasting 30 minutes. This makes the pedestrian or bicycle mode useless.
Yes, it is a cool unit. But it should work as advertised. My first Garmin unit, based on the Palm Pilot V platform, worked much better than this more advanced unit.
