- Windows XP (or any other operating system)
Windows 7 is best experienced on a new PC with the latest hardware, but if your computer meets the minimum specifications, you can install Windows 7 on a PC running Windows XP. Windows 7 must be "custom" installed (also known as a "clean" installation) over Windows XP. Before beginning the installation, you'll need to copy your files and settings to an external drive. After Windows 7 has been installed you will need to re-install all of your programs using the original installation media and then copy over the files and settings you backed up to your external drive. Because Windows 7 requires a custom installation, we strongly recommend that you get help with this process from your local computer service provider. The Worst Upgrade Experience I Ever Had November 21, 2009 Jerome Hartzog (NYC) I preordered the software on Amazon.com with the intention of upgrading from Windows Vista Ultimate. When the installation wizard requested the seriel numbers. I typed the numbers and it came up invalid. I called Amazon.com Customer service and told them that the activation numbers that were provided to me did not work, and it would have to work or I have to mail back the product. I wanted it to work. She said call this number and see if you can get it fixed. When I contacted Microsoft customer service I would spend more than 15 telephone hours over 3 days to reinstall the software, remote actuate my machine, give me false product keys, while treating me like an idiot from people who had no english skills and dialects as if they were reading phonics from a machine. As audacious as it may sound, around the fourth representitive actually asked me if I have an internet connection, after the first rep had me on the telephone for 5 hours supervising the first reinstall, when I purchased Microsofts Flagship Operating System. I was passed from one caller to another, who was not aware of the previous issue that I had. "You have to repeat it so I can make sure." I felt like I purchased an interrogation. What are we going to do today that we didn't do yesterday? 4 hours later after another install (Actually said she wanted to say on the line with me, "would you please call me back in a half hour" I asked) She had me reinstall and I gave her the numbers to authenticate by phone. Your copy is invalid was the message, your copy will only be good for 29 days. Where did you get it from, did you get it from the Middle East? (it says on the label made in Peurto Rico)I told the rep I ordered it from Amazon.com. They called me back and had me simply press windows>pausebreak give them a number and then they gave me a number and it worked. I gave Windows 7 Ultimate 5 stars because it is a good operating system, and I am using it.
Thanks, but... no thanks! November 21, 2009 J. Barroso (Beijing PR of CHINA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
The only reason for getting this, and it applies to ALL Win 7's versions, would be "Work in the language of your choice and switch between any of 35 languages." because I work with 3 or 4 languages regularly, and often need the OS in the native language or something will simply not work.
As for MS and their Win offers... it's always down the slope! MS should stop trying to control people's PCs. The choice, in EVERYTHING, should be left to the user!
One thing I learned from MS, and I am a sucker for technology, and support other people's PCs often, is, NEVDER buyanything from MS until 1 year after release date; NEVER upgrade anything (SPs or Service Packs OK sometimes... yet, not always...); NEVER get anything that has not received at least ONE Service Pack bag of fixes; PREFERABLY, buy a new OS with a new machine (that may mean every 5-7 years...) because companies will send you a machine with all the drivers, etc. installed for you...
And finally, NEVER EVER upgrade if you are happy, and being productive with your current OS!!! If it ain't broke, don't fix it!...
I am planning the next couple of years to move over to LINUX based solutions, although I will keep a Win machine around for those legacy programs that won't run on a LINUX --- yet, even that is becoming less and less of a problem, with emulation, etc.
I love it! November 21, 2009 Miron Chumash I have upgraded to Windows 7 ultimate after using windows vista ulimate and it's previous O/S. I enjoy it as I have never did on any previous O/S. In other words, I love it. Microsoft has done a good job!
Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit is the best OS ever released by Microsoft, period November 21, 2009 Hugo D. Hackenbush (Main Street, USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I own a 3-year-old Dell XPS 410 with an Intel Core 2 6700 CPU @ 2.66GHz, equipped with a RAID 0 650 GB dual hard drive, 4 GB DDR2 RAM and an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTS 640MB "Direct X 10"-compatible graphics card. Sadly, I have been displeased with the performance of my computer ever since I chose to upgrade from Windows XP Media Center Edition to Vista Ultimate 32-bit a mere few weeks after initially purchasing my computer.
After several years of using the miserably sluggish, sporadically buggy Vista Ultimate 32-bit OS, I have recently upgraded my computer to Windows 7 Ultimate 64-Bit. All I can say is... WHAT A DIFFERENCE.
The last time my computer ran this quickly was when I used it with Windows XP, with which it came pre-installed with. It retains all of the best features of Vista, while adding lots of performance and visual tweaks that really adds to the overall user's computing experience.
The new layout is smartly designed, attractive and intuitive. I especially appreciate the new taskbar setup with the "jump list" and "peek and shake" features, while the best holdover feature from Vista, "Windows Search" works better than ever. The new networking setup, Windows Media Center, Windows Media Player, the back up and restore feature, the redesigned defrag setup, the built-in security features... all have been subtlety but effectively improved over Vista. My computer really does feel like a new machine.
All of my software (including Adobe Master Collection CS4, Microsoft Office 2007 Professional, Kaspersky Internet Security Suite 2010, Roxio Creator Pro 2010, Microsoft MapPoint 2010, Microsoft Student 2009 and WinX DVD Ripper) works like a dream, and I have thus far experienced zero compatibility issues with any of my 32-bit software using Windows Ultimate 64-bit; even my two-year-old Dell printer works without a hitch. Not a single driver conflict has arisen so far; this is by far the most stable Microsoft OS I have ever used.
As a matter of fact, much of my software seems to actually run better now than it ever did when I was using Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit... and that's where I am most pleased with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit: its fine, smooth performance, right down to the quick start-up and shut down times. This is the OS that Microsoft promised, and failed, to deliver with Windows Vista, as it really does compare favorably with Mac OS X... an occurrence I never thought I'd live to experience, quite frankly.
In fact, this is the first time in years that I have not regretted being an early adopter (I'm cursed with poor impulse control); this is something I can't even claim with Windows XP (as I recall, I experienced far more driver compatibility issues with XP when it first debuted).
If I have one minor (and I do mean minor) caveat with Windows 7, it is with the removal of USB flash and external drives; it doesn't seem to power down the drives when I properly eject them, as is the case with Windows XP. This was also the case with Windows Vista when I installed the SP2 patch, and I am unclear as to whether this is a USB driver issue or the USB "safely remove hardware" feature has been altered in some way.
All caveats aside, I cannot recommend this OS enough. For PC users, this is as good as it currently gets.
Windows 7 was a good move November 19, 2009 R. Larry Poe With all the reported troubles with Vista, I skipped it and ran Windows Xp since it came out. I was ready for a change and heard good reports on Windows 7. I took a chance and I'm glad I did. I love it and only wish it would have come out sooner.
