| | | TOSLINK Cable Keeps Pure Digital Audio Signal Between Components The TOSLINK optical audio connection carries a digital audio stream using a fiber-optic cable. This AmazonBasics TOSLINK Cable is perfect for whenever you need to connect audio devices, such as a CD or DVD players to a receiver or preamplifier. In home-theater applications, you can use the TOSLINK connection to send a Dolby Digital or DTS soundtrack to an audio processor or A/V receiver for surround-sound decoding. Since TOSLINK uses fiber-optic cable, it is free from distortion caused by electrical or magnetic interference that an electrical cable would incur. The result is an audio signal that is purer, as well as truer to the original recording. Quality Construction with Gold-Plated Connectors This AmazonBasics cable features a durable, black PVC outer layer, and gold-plated connectors that resist corrosion and offer optimal signal transfer. Couldn't have done better November 21, 2009 J. Anderson Great no nonsense optical cable. Far more flexible than I had imagined. I like the idea of getting absolutely the best possible sound quality out of my components.
Good, but warrants a slight improvement November 20, 2009 Mainiac (Maine, USA) I have among my home theater setup three optical digital audio cables now. The others are a Monster cable that was on the expensive side, and a MediaBridge, chosen in part because it was inexpensive.
The MediaBridge was a disappointment because the connector -- the black part of the jack -- was shorter than the Monster cable and consequently kept falling out of my Roku player. As pointed out by the manufacturer in a comment after my review, this might have been the fault of the Roku player. (MediaBridge has since changed their design, I've noticed, and the black part is longer now.)
Anyway, that's the only important functional difference I notice between the three brands of cable. These work great, and of course I appreciate both the price and the "just open the box" frustration-free packaging.
The only thing I would change about these cables, which really isn't that important, is that digital audio cables have an orientation in terms of how the jack has to be rotated to be plugged in correctly. The printing and detailing on these jacks is the same on the "up" and the "down" side, which makes it harder to tell that you've got it rotated correctly when you're plugging it in. (Okay, there's not a specific orientation on audio equipment, so no up and down, but I hope you get my point.) My equipment is in a corner that's not well lit, and this point of confusion just means I need to fiddle more. It's not that important in that I'm not constantly changing the connections... once it's set, it's pretty set. But that's the one thing I'd change about these. (The MediaBridge and Monster are both better on this front; the MediaBridge has a little arrow on the side that has the clipped corners for the jack, and the Monster just has it's name wrapped around, but at least it's not symmetric.)
Great cable great price November 19, 2009 Scott D The cable does the job. It is inexpensive and the construction is just as good as any other Toslink cable I bought.
Simply boxed, easy to use, sounds good. November 18, 2009 JujubeMBA (USA) Nothing to complain about with this cable. There's plenty of length, the construction is sturdy, and it conveys good sound. Works great for us. Love that it came simply in a box, without being encased in thick plastic--that's always such a hassle to cut through!
Great cable at a great price avoids tangling too! November 4, 2009 P. MSakamoto (Saratoga, California USA) The Amazon Basics line of connecting cables is a great concept. Since it's pretty hard to shoplift from Amazon, why have the nightmare packaging and go with common sense plain brown boxes instead?
As other reviewers have said, the cables work great, sound good and you need to remember to remove the rubber protectors on the ends before using.
An additional plus of these cables versus some other TOSLINK products on the market is that they have a thicker than average outer insulation/protection layer which makes them less prone to twist and tangle. Some TOSLINK cables have very thin outer diameters and are extremely flexible. As a result they are easy to knot up or tangle which is something that does not happen with Basics. The basics are flexible enough to route around the back of the home theatre, but not so limp that they tangle.
Anyways, just great, especially for the price.
