Using its built-in Wi-Fi, the Eye-Fi Card locates any surrounding Wi-Fi networks as you take pictures. Then, the Eye-Fi Service translates that data into geographic location and adds the information to each picture (in the EXIF data) as it is delivered to the web or your computer. It's as easy as that. You snap the shot and the photo shows up labeled with the city and state in which it was taken.
The coverage area is expanding all the time, as new Wi-Fi access points appear and as the location of those wireless networks are mapped and added to the system. Today, in North America, about 70 percent of the populated areas have been mapped. In Europe, the top 50 metropolitan areas are covered, along with 70 percent of the populated areas in Germany, France and the UK. Coverage is expanding in Western Europe as well as several areas of Asia, including Japan, Korea, Taiwan and other countries.
Certain online photo sites already support geotagging and even have visualization tools that let you map your memories. Check out Flickr, Picasa and SmugMug to see what geotagging can do. Many desktop photo management programs also make good use of geotags as well, including Adobe's Photoshop Elements 6 (PC only), Google's Picasa (PC only), Ovolabs Geophoto (mac only) and Microsoft's Pro Photo Tools (PC only).

 Doesn't transfer directly to your computer September 9, 2009

My two star rating is probably unfair, but the Eye-Fi Explore doesn't do what I need it to do and I don't think that was clear from the description. So this is a possible heads up for some.
I wanted to geotag photos, which is why I ordered the Explore. But I also have a MacBook Air which only has one USB port and I wanted to wirelessly transfer pictures from my camera to my laptop. However the Explore model won't do this -- it doesn't work on an adhoc network --it must connect to an infrastructure network with a router. I will get some use out of it as an SD card, so I didn't give it a single star rating. Would have given it 2 1/2 if that was allowed.

I love the easy set up for you or whoever---them forget it, just turn camera on. No more trips to unload their pictures. You can even set it up so family or ? can view from wherever they are if you want. Forget where you took the picture will also be a thing of the past, even worked for me indoors.

I bought the Eye-Fi Explore 2 GB Wi-Fi SD card on Amazon and love it. I use it with my Mac at home and can unload photos both to my iPhoto library and to web sites like MobileMe, Facebook and Flickr etc. About a couple of months after I bought the card, I upgraded the firmware so that I can selectively upload the photos, as opposed to uploading all photos. Amazingly this feature works on all cameras. I truly believe that this is a must-have if you use a digital camera with SD card slot. Also, I can use my Eye-Fi card to automatically geotag all my photos, having them show up on the map in iPhoto.

This has got to be the most incredible device ever. Not only is it like magic with the automatic upload, but geo tagging to boot. It really is as easy to use as it says. I would recommend this for everyone that owns a camera.
