2 out of 5 stars Decent software, but inferior to free versions   November 5, 2009
Mad Max (Seattle, WA USA)
First, (writing in Nov 2009) I believe the 2009 version I currently have is already outdated. I'm unaware of the history/reason my software, which was released just a few months ago, is already replaced -- too many errors? recall? Not sure.

Anyway ... this is a decent piece of software, not great. I agree with a lot of the complaints on the Amazon reviews - no product support, virus protection lacks (lots of false positives), and reports are not terribly useful. There are also some problems registering the product - they *really* want you to buy a new box every time, for every computer, which always causes problems.

My big problem with Kaspersky is a hint of greed behind the product line -- anybody who puts excessive protections on their software, at the expense of consumer convenience, has profit (not functionality or customer satisfaction) as their #1 goal. This hunch is reinforced by their lack of support - after you buy it, they seem not to care if it works for you.

But my BIGGEST problem with this, is that anti-virus protection should be free. If Kaspersky really believes in investing energy into this product, they should make it free to consumers and charge for upgrades/advances applications (such as network and business accounts). The fact is, this is already the business model for the top rated antivirus softwares.

So here's my recommendation: Get a free antivirus. The best one right now, according to reviews of the experts, is Avast. I've never had problems with Avast (except that it wants to update too often, but it only takes a few seconds). I used to run AVG, and loved it, but the new version is too clunky, lots of crashes.

*Everybody* should be running a hosts file, which Kaspersky completely ignores. The best currently is "hostsman" (and yes, it's free too).

And for firewall, the most recent IT studies say that the Windows XP or Vista firewall works as well as any other. It's free, and chances are you already have it. If you're running Me, 2000, or earlier, try ZoneEdit (also free).

If you're running Vista, you may want to try some of their built-in safeguards. I tried Vista for a while, and went back to XP (too clunky). But if you're on Vista, it's got some pretty decent safeguards already, and may not work well with 3rd party software.

My bottom line is, the computer is a tool which I want to *work* when I turn it on, not spend time or energy cleaning up viruses or other crap, and I should have to spend a fortune protecting it. I haven't had a problem in 4 years (and the last trojan was because my brother-in-law disabled the hosts protection on my laptop to download a game). So I wish you good luck and happy, trouble-free surfing!

5 out of 5 stars Is Working Fine So Far....   October 18, 2009
Sunday (PlanetEarth)
I got this version of Kaspersky last year, but just needed it this month, when my McAfee VirusScan Plus expired. I, of course, uninstalled McAfee first, before trying to install Kaspersky, only to be told there was still something left on the PC by McAfee, that was blocking the installation of Kaspersky. That sort of thing makes me cringe! I then went to "techincal assistance" or whatever it was called, on the Kaspersky CD, and immediately saw a question about what to do if a third party security system was blocking installation. Clicking that in, I discovered there were tools for McAfee, Norton's, etc. to remove the problem file. Clicking in McAfee took me to the McAfee file, which I opened, and that started the removal process.

After then going back to installing Kaspersky, I got my old friend Error 1500. That has nothing to do with the Kaspersky software, and everything to do with my PC or Vista. (For the solution to that error, please read my review of Corel Photo Album 7.) After fixing the Error 1500 problem, Kaspersky installed immediately. I then had to update, since this version of the software is so old. That went quickly also, thought I was hooked up to my sister's high speed router, and not my usual dial-up connection...so, I don't know how fast or slow the update would have been with dial-up. Next, I did a full scan, and Kaspersky found 4 infected files with something "very dangerous" in them.

Two weeks later, the daily updates for Kaspersky install very quickly, even on dial-up. And they don't slow down my PC. McAfee's updates slowed down my PC, and sometimes they were so long, I had to go hook up my laptop to my sister's high speed router to do them. McAfee had a maintenance feature, though, and this version of Kaspersky does not; so, I'm going to have to remember to start doing maintenance PC stuff now. Also, interestingly, Kaspersky does not have a firewall, although it does have spyware protection. Thus, you must use your Windows firewall, which is fine with me...as long as I don't have to use Windows Defender!

Thus, so far, I'm happy with Kaspersky...and am looking forward to hopefully an uneventful year.

1 out of 5 stars Do Not Buy - NO STARS   October 15, 2009

FYI - this product would not install. Software telling me that I needed to remove software that never existed on the computer . . .hours of time wasted and had to return to seller for refund.

4 out of 5 stars Easy and Fast to laod   October 15, 2009
Stingray (IA, USA)
i bought this in replacement of my norton which really gives my system a boost. not only keeps my system virus-free but also don't clog my start-up. after my subscription expires next year i will still choose kaspersky than any other Anti-virus out there available.

5 out of 5 stars Silent Power   September 29, 2009
Aristotle (CA, USA)
So far, that said two months of use of the product since I purchased it, I am completely satisfied. It looks like running automatically without my intervention and keeps everything outside my computer's borders. It acts like a deterrent.I think so! It is the ultimate threat to external theats.
