Great Personal Laser Printer November 25, 2009 Scott E. Tillson (San Diego, CA USA) This little Brother HL-2170W laser printer has far exceeded my initial expectations. For a price well south of $100 (at least when I bought it online thru Amazon), it has been a gem. Out of the box, it set up in about 15 minutes to include full wireless (WiFi) connection and wired ethernet. Just follow the instructions included with the printer for a flawless setup. My WiFi signal is pretty weak where the Brother is located, but it seems to get what it needs without any major delay. The 32MB of onboard RAM spools print jobs very quickly. I gave top 5-star ratings in almost all areas. Where I didn't, it's only because I haven't used that rating area (e.g., reliability), or a couple little things bring it down:
--When it prints, it's a bit on the noisy side. But fortunately, it has a built-in sleep feature which powers down the printer to a silent state.
--When it starts up, it seems to draw a lot of power - the nearby desk lamp actually dims. So be a little cautious about the power circuit you connect it to or you might overload and trip a breaker.
--The front bypass sheet feeder (manual feeder) is just a flip down slot cover. There's nothing to support the page or form or envelope. When you stick a sheet in the slot, eventually the printer grabs the leading edge and holds it until the print command is received. Just be sure to keep the sheet square in the slot until this happens or you might get a misfeed.
All in all, this is a great little printer for personal use or small office (say, around 100-200 print impressions or less per day). I highly recommend taking a look at this printer as an alternative to HP.
Brother HL-2170W review November 25, 2009 A. Patel (Fayetteville, NC) I purchased this printer from Amazon. It was great price and service was quick for delivery.
Printer is fast and print quality is good. I networked it through router and was promptly recognized by all
my computers (desktop and wireless notebooks). Only complaint I have is paper jam occuring every 40-50 pages of printing. Trial cartrige did print 1000 pages as mentioned.
Ben A Smalley November 22, 2009 Ben A. Smalley (tallahassee) This has been a pleasent suprize for me as the last Brother product I purchased was a complete disappointment. This printer is quick and prints nicely despite being used in Iraq where power supplies are not the best and the dust is everywhere, very good piece of equipment and a great value.
Awesome value! November 22, 2009 Guillermo Leal (Dayton, OH) This printer was easier to set up that I ever imagined and it works like a charm throughout my whole house in a mixed Mac/Windows environment. Wish I would have bought it sooner.
It's a workhorse! November 22, 2009 Brandeline (United States) I have to say, I really like this printer. We bought one of these for business use a few months ago to replace an older HP inkjet for which the ink prices had mysteriously and suddenly doubled. I guess maybe HP didn't want to support our old printer anymore or something, but they motivated me into buying a new printer all right.. just too bad it wasn't one of theirs with it's hefty ink prices!
After much looking and considering ink/toner costs as well as the printer cost, we finally settled on this Brother laser. So far, it's been really reliable. The print quality is excellent as well, and it's quite speedy. It is perhaps a little noisier than I might have expected, but it isn't so bad that I notice it most days.
Others have mentioned how it wants to change the toner cartridge pretty early, and we've also found that to be true, but we did the trick with the masking tape over the sensor hole in the cartridge, and were able to more than double the print output before we started seeing any degradation in the prints. Also love the half ream paper tray capacity. Our old one would hold maybe 50 sheets.
In the summer, I do wish I had a spot for it to the right of the computer instead of on the left, as it vents slightly warm air on me while I'm working. In the winter that's a more welcome trait!
We haven't actually tested any of the wireless functions, so I can't comment on that, but it was fairly easy to hook up the traditional way.
All in all, I adore this little printer.
