Zoom H2 November 22, 2009 JP O'Donnell (Boston) This is a terrific product ... easy to use and produces great audio results.
Zoom H2 portable recorder November 19, 2009 Sargon Yalda (Morton Grove, IL United States) Exactly what I was dreaming of, I love it. Great for music or choral demo productions or practice sessions.
Excellent quality, easy to use November 16, 2009 Wonderpuppy (Chicago, IL USA) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is the second Zoom H2 I've purchased, not because there was a problem with the first one, but because it is so easy to use that I use one myself and lend the second one out for others to make recordings for me. I record class lectures and sermons to listen to on my iPod during the week. I'm a private piano teacher, so I also use the Zoom to make a quick recording of myself for my students, or of my students for themselves, etc. I make the recording during the lesson, then email the file to the student later that day. The Zoom is small enough to fit into your pocket (it's about the size of a cigarette box) and runs on two AA batteries or the included AC adapter. Transferring files to your computer is very easy. You can choose the file type you wish to record to: AIFF, WAV, or MP3, and you can choose the bit rate (higher for music, lower for spoken word). There is an internal metronome and a tuner, but I haven't ever used these.
great little toy - PITA for real work November 12, 2009 whomper (virginia) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
This is a great little toy.
But it is a PITA to use for real work.
It does not work the way I think.
It does not do what I want to do very well.
Some things you would expect, it doesn't really do at all.
The plus is that it works and is cheap.
And comes with almost all the accessories you need. I needed some additional cables and adapters. You may not. And it is light and portable. The battery option works fine for field use, and it does have A/C for use indoors.
The bad is that it is crippled featurewise which may help sell more H4s but leaves this thing as just a toy that I hate to love.
Worse - it has a lot of useless "features" that bumped out what is really needed andor ran the cost up.
Don't need a metronome. Got one that is better and easier to use.
Don't need a tuner. Got one that is better and easier to use.
Don't want to copy cds with it. My PC does that job better.
Don't want a usb mike. Better quality from it if you record to the SD card and copy the files.
Don't want to split files, or adjust anything with this device. The DAW on my PC does that so much better and easier.
There is no way to just record ,play, and then save a file OR RERECORD. The thing just keeps creating new files every time you stop and start recording. And there is no way to erase them except one at a time. BIG PITA!
Superscope elevation and a PC with an interface will beat this thing hands down for quick easy recording at home.
You cannot pause and then continue recording. It creates yet another file. PITA!
There is no speaker! You have to use earphones to hear what you recorded to check it. PITA!
The manual does not give any details so you have to guess which of the agc/compression/limiting functions really would work best. Ditto for low cut. Annoying.
The mike gain , at least on my unit, is inadequate for field use. And not really useful to record discussions well in a medium sized conference room.
The manual even says you need to be about 6" to 5 feet from the source. Major fault for field use and many situations. If I could get that close then I would use a real mike and a real recorder or PC w/ audio interface.
They hype the 4 mikes, but the european version appears to have midside miking which would be better for stereo. W arrangement is just a Gimmick IMHO.
Not sure about this in the manual, but I tried to play back the way it showed and got strong feedback loop. Not sure how or even if you can turn off the recording function so you can playback externally without blowing the speakers out.
The manual is mixed quality. And poor where you need it to be detailed.
It says it can do 96/24 recording but another page warns that it may miss data at that speed. So basically you need to record at 44.1/16 CD rates instead of getting higher quality to assist in editing.
I could have gotten another recorder with a speaker, at about half the cost, if I knew that my quality was limited, and the functions were hard to use.
File handling is awkward. PITA.
This thing can record a long session for the record. And you can edit on your PC later.
If you try to use the editing features on this thing you are a masochist, IMHO.
And if you just want to replace your old tape recorder to capture a musical idea and then record over it until you get it right this thing makes you really work at doing that. PITA. Way too many button pushes needed.
Overall very disappointed in ease of use.
Quality is very good, and capability is good but not great.
For the price, if you can live with the old VCR style of difficulty in using it, then it is a good buy.
If you want easy to use, keep looking.
This thing needs a speaker.
And desperately needs the ability to pause and restart recording to the same file.
And it needs an erase all files command.
Exceeded my expectations November 12, 2009 JimJenn (Nashville) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
This unit blows me away! I use it for interviews and occasionally recording choral groups. This is 10X better than the horrid Sony Mini disc recorder it's replacing.
The built in mics sound better than my SM-58. It has features built in (compressor, auto gain control, normalization, etc). I needed post recording software(Adobe Audition)before.
The 360 degree recording is, as Will Ferrell (in "Blades of Glory") would say: "Mind bottling"!
By the way, it cost me $30 LESS than the mini disc recorder.
