Product Description Marpac Sound Screen & SleepMate 980 combines American ingenuity and craftsmanship to create a lightweight, yet durable appliance capable of many years of reliable service. Marpac sound conditioners create a consistent, smooth sound of rushing air. The tone and volume of the sound are controlled by simply rotating the "cap" and "collar" of the housing. This "white noise" sound effectively masks unwanted noises and creates a sense of calm, making it easier to concentrate, relax and/or sleep. These sound conditioners are recommended for restless sleepers, shift workers, infants, children, students, apartment dwellers, office workers (for confidentiality) and many others. The dual speed 980 is made of durable plastic housing suitable for travel or use in the home or office.

Awesome March 21, 2010 Karen A. Beck (Omaha, NE) I love this sound machine. I use it in my bedroom. I will turn it on when I'm talking on the phone so that noone can hear what I'm talking about. But I also really love to have it on at night when I sleep so that I cannot hear other noises that wake me up such as my dad snoring/hollering in his sleep. It gives out such a relaxing sound!!!
Marpac Sleepmate March 20, 2010 K. Hamblin (Stanford, KY, US) The SleepMate has worked wonders with sound conditioning, and I only have to use the low setting. My sleep has improved tremendously, I would definitely recommend this product!
Awesome Product March 19, 2010 Gordon P. Martinez (Thibodaux, LA) This SleepMate is awesome if you are accustomed to sleeping with a fan this is a great product to buy. I always used to sleep with a fan which can get very cold in the winter. But now I just put on my SleepMate and it sounds exactly like my fan!
Love it! Great product. March 18, 2010 Louis Icart (Florida, USA) Love the Sleepmate 980A BECAUSE it muffles my husbands snooring and I can get some uninterrupted sleep..Does not totally block it out. I am going to take this on my next cruise for better sleep.
Not for People That Like the Sound of a Quiet PC March 18, 2010 Eponym (Seattle) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
It is very likely this review will get passed up by the 900+ others, but it's important to realize this "Sound Conditioner" isn't for everyone. When I first purchased the SleepMate I was excited to receive it after reading the great reviews and watching a couple YouTube clips (which in hindsight only give you half an idea of what they sound like). When it was first turned on, it sounded like a mix between an old computer fan (specifically CPU) and a very quiet vacuum. There are two volume levels. It has basic "EQ"ing by cutting the higher frequency noises with a twist of the top or cutting mid frequencies with a twist at the middle; you can't control the lower frequency noises. When the mids and highs are cut all the way down you can hear the motor clearest. When twisting full open, you cycle through various 1990's PC fan noises--full open being the cheapest sounding PC of them all. I spend extra money buying quiet case fans for work to prevent hearing this all day. Why would I want to bring this sound to my home? If listening to a noisy PC is not your idea of a great night's sleep, then stay away from this.
If you like the sound of wind blowing, then buy yourself a quiet desk fan or a larger one for big spaces. Have it face the ceiling and cover parts of it with duct tape or place various objects on or around it to get more EQing (if that's your thing). They usually have 3+ "volume" (aka speed) settings. If you're concerned about your room being drafty just place the fan facing an enclosed space, like in a far corner or under a vanity, to create a weak vortex. Your ears will thank you for it and you'll have more utility during the summer months.
