Good for personal usages but too noisy November 15, 2009 Moon H. Cho (Fullerton, CA) Great typewriter for the personal usage. Working great, although inserting paper is kind of irritate me.
Real problem is, that it is too loud to use in anywhere. The noise is making me feel like I'm around the old lawn mower.
Solid Value October 23, 2009 D. Baskin (Seattle, WA) This is a simple and reliable typewriter, much in the tradition of the of the economical or "student" electric typewriters of the early 80's. The typing operation and lift-off correction tape have worked flawlessly. For those who want an inexpensive and reliable electric typewriter, this a very good choice.
Good value, Good for forms and envelopes September 28, 2009 Eve G. (Upstate New York) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Brother seems to have cornered the market these days on electric typewriters. I bought this typewriter more than five years ago, from a warehouse club for $150.00, which is a much more than its Amazon price today. I only take it out to fill in forms and type on small labels or envelopes. It's worked perfectly and held up great.
I used to own a Smith Corona electric typewriter, with mushy keys. I'd push down on it and it felt spongy, doesn't have that "clicky" feel to it that I prefer. The Brother's keys have a firmer touch. I swore not to buy another Smith Corona electric because of the feel of the keys.
The only reason I didn't give the Brother five stars is that I type over 70wpm, and the typewriter can't keep up with me. I'd type a whole sentence, have to pause, then wait for it to complete the printout. It's a bit annoying, and I'm sure the little print-preview window would solve my problem, but I fix it by slowing...down...to...a...crawl...about...30wpm.
Warning about changing daisywheels. The original wheel that it came with works well. I'd pop it out play with it, then pop it back in and type away fine. However, when I changed it over to a different typeface, it printed wrong characters. I'd type a W and it came out A. I discovered that on the spare daisy wheel, I have to align a pin on the wheel to a hole on the daisy wheel uptake (pin has to be at around the 2 o'clock spot). You'd know it when you look at it. When I lined them up when installing the wheel, the spare daisy wheel printed fine.
It's very easy to change wheels, or change ribbons. I needed to follow instructions for changing the correction tape, but once I did it once, it wasn't hard. All the keys are clearly labeled. It has up and down line-scroll functions. The little print-preview window allows for correcting mistakes before they're typed out.
Overall a fine and reliable machine. I always liked Brother products.
-Only- about Brother's Customer Service July 28, 2009 J 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have a Brothers' laser printer, all in one, and in general have found their products to be reliable and to never need repair. However, I called Brother's main line because I wanted some information about a typewriter. I had contacted the company via e-mail and had not received a response. First, the representative who answered did not listen to me and spoke so quickly that he directed me to the wrong department. When I called back, he gave me another number, then hung up with hardly a thank you. When I called the second number he gave me, this representative asked me what I product I wanted. I told him I didn't know; thus my call to ask questions. In response to this he asked for my phone number. I gave my phone number and expected to ask some questions; instead, he stated that in order to continue, he wished for more information (I had not even bought anything) but that if I didn't want to give any personal information, I had to say "refuse" or "continue." I said I just had some questions because I did not think he would need any personal info if I just wanted some answers without committing to buy anything. To my surprise, the gentleman stated again, (quickly and abruptly, like the first representative), "In order to continue, you -must- say "Refuse" or "Continue!") This felt very strange to me. I felt very robotic and awkward and forced myself to do what he told me to do -- i.e.; say "refuse." When I asked my questions, he listed serial numbers so quickly that I had to repeat them back and I -felt- he was extremely impatient. When my questions were answered, I said "Thank you," but he had already said a "Thank you" and had hung up!
This is just from a customer service point of view, and it is from brother's headquarters, not related to Amazon's sales, I believe. But just FYI. I still like and trust brother's -products- very much.
I called Smith Corona and a gentleman named Bill answered and was quite nice and directed me to the model that would suit my needs because he knew what questions to ask a customer -- I believe that as a company, one should expect a customer to know less about the company's product and to help educate the customer re: the company's products as opposed to being unreceptive to customers' questions.
Just my two cents.
Simple, neat, but lacks memory function June 12, 2009 Fred The typewriter is easy to operate due to its simplicity. However, it lacks a memory function for addresses or repeated phrases. Its visual typing window is very legible, and so far it has been an excellent typewriter for short typing applications.
