Amazon.com Review
Maxell's HP-NC1 portable headphones are equipped with Noisebuster, a patented noise-reduction technology that really works, making the HP-NC1 an ideal companion for in-flight (or even on-bus) music lovers.

The Noisebuster technology works via the following process: tiny microphones within each earpiece "listen" for any pervasive environmental noise and send this information to a device called an in-line audio-enhancer pack. This device reads and analyzes the information and then generates a noise-cancellation wave that's out of phase with the noise itself. The audio-enhancer pack feeds this wave back into the headset--when the noise wave goes up, a corresponding cancellation wave goes down, causing the two signals to cancel each other out. This eliminates a good deal of unwanted sonic junk, from airplane engine noise to distant freeway traffic seeping into your living room.

We evaluated our HP-NC1s as a utility crew used jackhammers on the street outside our listening room. Because you can bypass the Noisebuster technology with a switch, it was easy for us to compare the noise-canceled signal to the standard sound. While Noisebuster didn't entirely eliminate the jackhammer's rat-a-tat-tat, it did significantly reduce the sound so that we could listen to quiet music, such as soft jazz and classical.

As for the sound of the headphones themselves, the midrange is clear, but the HP-NC1s are a little sluggish overall, with no deep bass or extended high frequencies. In fairness to the HP-NC1s, noise-canceling headsets often sound restricted in the frequency extremes, as it can be tricky for the noise-canceling devices to differentiate between noise and music. The fit of these headphones is also a little snug for our taste, but you can loosen them a bit by gently bending the headset.

We have heard comparably priced, non-noise-canceling headphones that sound better than Maxell's HP-NC1. However, better sound doesn't matter much if you're having a hard time hearing the music in a noisy environment. At this price, these headphones are a bargain.

Pros:

  • Noisebuster technology works well
  • In-flight dual-jack adapter included
  • In-line volume control

Cons:

  • Snug fit may be uncomfortable
  • Average sound quality

4 out of 5 stars Great Headphones for the Price   September 19, 2009
Rebecca McGonigle (Savannah GA USA)
These noise-cancellation headphones are the cheapest that I could find for my transatlantic flight to Ireland. I had another pair previously for my flight to Hawaii from the east coast. The over the ear design reduces cabin noise and doesn't start to bother you for about 6 hrs of constant wear. Take a break for food and you're ready to go again. They had reasonable sound and adequate noise-cancellation to drown out crying babies and cabin noise. Add earplugs if you need total quiet to sleep. The price was right for my occasional needs and for kids.

5 out of 5 stars Great Product - Great Price   September 18, 2009
M. Sangmeister (Washington, DC)
These headphones are very good, especially for the price and Amazon continues to provide excellent product value. The headphones are comfortable on the head & ears, and collapsable and has both a single prong jack for PC, etc and a double prong for airplane use. The switch for noise reduction works bvery well. Just make sure you have the 2 AAA batteries to work the noise reduction, and also remember to shut the NR switch off when not in use. To Maxell: I recommend that some small type of electronic automatic noise reduction shut-down would be an enhancement to the product

4 out of 5 stars Good for the money   July 19, 2009

I purchased these for medical transcription and they work great. My only complaint is the annoying on/off switch is right in the middle of the cord, which is obnoxious. But I would buy again for sure!

1 out of 5 stars Cheap, flimsy   June 29, 2009

I bought these and had to return them two times. They just stopped working each time. The wires seem cheap and faulty. One side always stops working and then the next side follows shortly after. I hope this 3rd set holds out.

4 out of 5 stars Very happy with these   June 19, 2009
M. Jaffe (Mesa, AZ, USA)
Overall I have been very happy with these headphones. They are comfortable and the sound is fine for my purposes. I am not a critical audiophile, and to me these give a perfectly fine sound for my listening purposes. I like the long cord as well.
The only complaint I have is that they make my head and ears hot when I wear them for long periods of time. The leather around the ears gets very warm after listening for a while causing me to sweat a bit.
The noise reduction button works well, but does not completely shut off the outside world. I guess I expected it would, but this has not been a disappointment. Overall, this is a very good headphone for the price.
