Amazon.com Review According to author Loren Cordain, modern health and diet problems didn't start with the advent of packaged snack food, but much earlier--back at the dawn of the agricultural age many thousands of years ago. As humans became less nomadic and more dependent on high-carbohydrate diets, we left behind the diet we had evolved with, which is based on low-fat proteins and plenty of fruits and vegetables. Sugars, fats, and carbs were rare, if they were present at all, and survival required a steady, if low-key, level of activity. Cordain's book The Paleo Diet blends medical research with a healthy sprinkle of individual anecdotes, practical tips, and recipes designed to make his suggestions into a sustainable lifestyle, rather than a simple month-long diet; he even includes cooking recommendations and nationwide sources for wild game. Claims of improving diseases from diabetes to acne to polycystic ovary disease may be a little overstated, but in general the advice seems sound. Can any of us really go wrong by adding lots more vegetables and fruits to our daily regimen? One recommendation on safe tanning with a gradual reduction in sunscreen is surprising and not much detail is provided for safety issues that can accompany increased sun exposure. Still, Cordain's assertions have helped many people, and could provide exactly the changes you've been looking for to improve your health. --Jill Lightner

Great Read March 19, 2010 R. Stolz (New Orleans, LA) I think this is a fantastic book. I first learned about Cordain from Robb Wolf on the Paleolithic Solution podcast (Great stuff - listen if you don't already.) I am now reading Mark Sisson's Primal Blueprint which is also very helpful. The two books diverge in a few areas (e.g. consumption of milk). I just ordered the Cordain/Friel "Paleo Diet for Athletes". I can't wait to get it.
Good starting point filled with some opinions March 17, 2010 J. Brigman (North Carolina) I started a Paleo diet around 3 months ago after researching it. I've benefited greatly from the change in eating habits as a result of this. Since Cordain is typically associated with Paleo style diets I figured I should start with this book. While the book does offer up an overall foundation for Paleo eating, it is often time filled with opinion based information (such as tossing in our supposed evolution from monkeys as if it were fact) and many other opinions. However as the intro to the book states: "THIS BOOK REPRESENTS the culmination of my lifelong interest in the link between diet and health, and of my fascination with anthropology and human origins..." and as such the book is written from that perspective.
A previous reviewer stated that the book lacked research sources to back up some of the claims, however the book contains 20 pages of sources cited many of which are studies and/or research done that relates to the topic matter. Though I will say that the book needs to have footnotes or otherwise label the content with the associated resource so the reader can easily review it as they read the book.
The content of the book on a whole offers some solid reasoning and ideas regarding why the Paleo diet is clearly a much better solution compared to how most Americans eat. However this book is not a definitive guide for all things Paleo, and as such the reader should use this book as a stepping stone for a Paleo diet. I would recommend this book especially for the price as it does contain some very good info for would be Paleo dieters.
Great info, good read, everyone should be living the Paleo Diet March 17, 2010 R. Caperton Really good book. The paleo diet is more than a "diet", it's a lifestyle change that can have dramatic results on not only your weight(loss) but also your health. I have been living straight Paleo for 3 months and feel so much better.
Pretty Good Paleo Diet March 17, 2010 W. B. Perry (GA) I can only give this 4 stars instead of five due to the fact that Cordain used the term artery clogging saturated fat. Seriously Cordain's reasoning and logic for a paleo diet based on meat, veggies, fruit, and nuts, was rock solid, so I am perplexed as to why he would think that our ancestors would have not eaten the saturated fatty deposits that the wild game animals had. Of course wild game has less intramuscular fat, but it still has ample deposits of saturated fat, and I am confident that our ancestors were not worried about their cholesterol levels or heart disease. There is no way that they would turn down all of those tasty calories.I also don't like how he does not like butter, but thinks it is okay to cook with flax oil. The main point of the book is to eliminate the neolithic agents of destruction. Those are grains, legumes, dairy, and of course all modern refined processed foods. The book gives a lot of resources to find higher quality meats, and gives some good recipes and plans. Cordain touches on some of the diseases of civilization and how the paleo diet can help. If you know anyone on the Standard American Diet, I would highly recommend them trying the paleo diet to improve their health. With the exception of his stance on animal fat I highly recommend this book.
No DIET works for Klinefelter Syndrome! March 9, 2010 Mindtrue (Irvine, CA) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I have been on every diet and in fact have worked out 3 years with a personal trainer and now I know it is totally IMPOSSIBLE to lose ANY weight on KS. Nope, can't be done! And Paleo Diet did forget one element to his program, Cavemen would walk miles and miles hunting and gathering food by killing it. They didn't have the added convenience of driving to McDonalds and picking up a burger... and oh you want fries with that? hahahahaa and if that Caveman had KS.. he would still be overweight.
