3 out of 5 stars Might take too long to arrive   November 20, 2009
JeFaMe (Georgia)
The first summer we bought this kit, the caterpillars arrived fine--all of them alive. They turned into chrysalids within a few days, so I knew they were on the late side of arriving--close to two weeks after ordering. They all became pretty butterflies, nevertheless, and we fed them orange slices. We released them in our yard after a few days, and my young daughters loved the experience of raising "baby caterpillars" into butterflies. However, this year it was a much different experience. The caterpillars took nearly 3 weeks to come and arrived a smelly dead mess. The things had desperately tried to spin their cocoons in transport but you could tell were knocked off the lid before they could complete the process (and thus died). My daughters were crestfallen, and I never sent the container back for an exchange for fear that the next one would arrive late and dead as well. I live in the Atlanta area where receiving packages is usually much speedier than places like the small town where I grew up, so I am not sure where these come from.

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Experience   November 17, 2009
Shah (Texas, USA)
This turned out to be a very exciting and educational thing for my little son and for the entire family. Watching them grow from caterpillars into pupa and then into butterflies was surely a stunning experience. Fortunately I was able to capture two of the pupae turning into butterflies live. Watch the video at youtube. Video # MCVm_5XFIYo

4 out of 5 stars The caterpillars are not meant to be eaten!   October 29, 2009

I really cheated myself out of the best part of the butterfly garden by devouring the caterpillars mercilessly before they reached the cocoon stage.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Wonderful Visual Experience for Any Child that Loves Butterflies   October 28, 2009
bearboo2 (CA, United States)
My 3 year old loves to watch the metamorphosis from larvae to butterfly on You Tube, so I thought he would enjoy seeing it in real life. He was so fascinated he sat still for HOURS every day in front of the butterfly "house" watching and waiting. . . (And he is a child that rarely sits still for more than 5 minutes at a time!)The day the butterflies started to emerge from their cocoons he had the hugest smile on his face all day. He took the butterflies out for "walks" (like how we walk our puppy) on his finger and treated them like his pets, and then he eventually let them go in the garden. At $14 on Amazon (and no S/H and no tax), the pavilion is a great deal because if you go to the Insect Lore website (company that makes the Butterfly Pavilion) they want $15 just for the larvae plus you have to pay $9 shipping and tax. This way, for half the cost you also get an extra butterfly "house" which also works well for housing grasshoppers and crickets etc. Also, the kit guarantees that at least 3 of the 5 larvae will hatch into live butterflies. This is exceedingly important when dealing with a 3 year old's expectations. The butterfly "house" could be a little more durable and the zipper sometimes sticks, which is why I gave it only 4 stars. Otherwise, it is a 5 star product in my opinion.

It took longer to arrive. It must have come on a late Friday or Saturday delivery, but sat untill Monday. I usually check the mail, but that Saturday I was out of town. It was the hottest weekend. The containers were sticky and smelly. I opened the netting and placed the cocoons as directed. I waited and waited, at the end 3 of the butterflies must of been dead and another died which only left 1, he soon died because his wings were damaged. Horrible to watch. Won't do this again.NL
